7 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that'we, ALBION D. T. LIBBY and EDWARD J. TOMLINSON, citizens'of the a United States, and residents of East Orange and Newark, respectively, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electromagnet Structures, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an electro-magnetic structure having an electro-magnet made up of one or more windings and controlling two armatures, all mounted as a unitary structure on a base particularly designed to receive said structure.

. One of the objects of our invention is to provide an electrosmagnet having a core that is simple and consequently cheap to mannfactureand one which, will serve several lother functions as well as that of carrying" the magnetic flux produced by the winding or windings around said core.
Another object of our invention is to provide a base for mounting the electro-magnet other parts used in the complete assembled structure thereby reducing the number .of operations to produceth'e entire structure and consequentlyithe cost-thereof.
Other and further-{objects of our inven- 55 tion willbe apparent t o fthose familiar with this type of apparatus from an inspection of the specification and drawing attached thereto.

Referring now more particularly to the various parts shown in the drawing, 1 is a base, preferably of non-magnetic material, from which the bracket 2 is thrown up to carry the electro-magnet coil structure 44. From the base 1 is also obtained the parts 3, 4, 5, and 6 from which are formed the contact members having the same numbers and illustrated in their operative positions in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. When the base 1 is blanked out the contact members 3, 4, and 5 and support arm 6 are punched from the base at ,the same time that the supporting bracket 2 is throw n n piva rd i S upport bracket 2 has an ear 7 bent at right angles thereto. The ear 7 has a hole 8 for the purpose of receiving the screw that is used to hold the protecting cover over the base. The protecting cover, (not shown) is adapted to fit around the ledge 9 of base 1. 11 which is fastened thereto by a screw 12 and nut 13.
In the construction of small electro-magnets it has been the universal practice in the past to use round cores the same being made up on automatic screw machines. One of the chief difiiculties of this construction is the difliculty of fastening the heads on to the core so that during the process of winding these heads are very apt to become loosened and forced out of their proper position and it frequently happens that, due to the movement of these heads in the subsequent assembly and operation, the fine wire usually used in coils of'this character be comes broken and hence the entire coil as- It is also recognized by skilled mechanics that in general screw machine products are much more expensive than punched ones. By our method of constructing the core we avoid the above mentioned objections and at the same time produce a coil structure that is much more rigid and one in which the core can be used for other purposes without adding additional parts. In making the core itself we obtain from the proper kind of material a blank 14 which is. subsequently formed into the shape shown by the piece 15 in Fig. 6.

It willreadily be seen that this method of constructingthe core of the electro-magnet provides a means of fastening the same to the. base by means of screws spaced considerable distant from the center line of the core therebypreventing all tendencies for the electro-magnet to-turn about the center. Furthermore the ends of the core are formed to provide a support for the operating. armatures and also a support for the-means to .adjust the armatures 'to their proper working position. 'Where round cores are used a special piece to take the place of the arms 22 and 23 of the core pieces 15 and 16 must be provided and a special means of attaching this member to the core must also be provided. Our construction -,eliminates these extra parts andthe attendant difliculties required in their construction and assembl It will be noted that the armature 26 carries a contact 39 and the armature 27 carries a contact 40. An electro-magnetic structure comprising in combination, a base having an upturned bracket thereon, a core formed of punchings shaped to give flanges at each end thereof, armature members, means to adjust the tension on said armature members, resilient means cooperating withthe last mentioned means to hold the same in its adjusted position, the flanges at one end of. the core being fastened to said upturned bracket to furnish a support for said core, the flanges at the other'end of said core serving as a support for said armature members, and means serving as a secondsupport for the core upon said. base and also to fasten said resilient means to said core.

An electromagnetic st ructure comprising in combination, a base member having an up-turned bracket, armature members, means for adjusting the tension on said armatures, a core formed of two punchings fastened together, flanges at one end of said core formed by an oppositely outward bend of said punchings at right angles to the body of said core, flanges at the other end thereof formed by an oppositely outward bend of said punchings at right angles to the body of the core and then a second bend of said punchings at right ngles to said first bend, whereby these last mentioned flanges form a partial inclosure, said last named flanges serving as asupport for said armatures, said inclosure serving as a protection for said adjusting means, and the first mentioned flanges of said core serving as a supporting means for the same upon said up-turned bracket.

An electro-magnetie structure comprising in combination, a non-magnetic base, a punched core, armature members, said core being formed at. one end to provide a support for said armature. members, and integral flanges at the other end thereof servin as pole pieces for the armature members and also as a means whereby said core is sup- 10. An, electro-magnetic structure comprising in combination, a base member,a punched core having integral flanges at one end thereof. armature members and means to adjust the tension on said armature members, means supported by said core'fonlocking said adjusting means in position, the integral flanges on said core serving as a support for said armature members and also as asupport for the adjusting means, and means including brackets punched from; said base and arranged at each end of said core whereby all the above mentioned part: are supported upon said base member.
