Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed July 24, 1916. Serial No. 111,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burwell, in the county of Garfield and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric printing machines.
The object or my invention is to provide an electric printing machine for printing pictures of any size from films and glass negatives with or without means for leaving a white margin on any size picture printed by the machine. V
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement or parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, a suitable cabinet 1 is provided carrying at the lower portion thereof a receptacle 2 for the reception of the electric light bulbs 3. The smaller central bulb is red and is adapted to furnish light at all times, while the remaining lights are the ordinary white lights which are adapted to be controlled by mechanism hereafter de scribed.
The receptacle 2 is spaced from the cabinet at two sides thereof to allow for ventilation. Side reflectors l of any ordinary type are provided and these reflectors extend from the top plate 5 of the cabinet 1 downwardly within the receptacle 2 in a direction at an angle to the vertical. This construction provides the light chamber 6.
An opening 7 is provided in the top plate 5 through which the light from the chamber 6 is adapted to pass to print the pictures. In the top plate 5, two grooves 8 are cut and in these grooves, blocks 9 carrying straight mask plates 10, are adapted to slide. The
mask plates 10 extend across the opening 7. At one corner of the top plate 5 another groove 11 is cut and in this groove, a block 12 carrying anangular mask plate 13,, is also adapted to slide. By adjusting the two straight mask plates 10 and the angle mask plate 13 with relation to each other the opening 7 may be made smaller Or larger to enable various size pictures to be printed and to provide a white border of various sizes 011 the edge of the paper.
On two sides of the opening 7 two guides 10 and 10" are located. Guide 10 is fastened at each of its ends to the correspond ing edge of the top plate 5 while guide 10 has one end bearing in a block 10 which holds a spring 10 This spring normally pushes the guide 10 into engagement with a notch 10 provided in guide 10 thus resiliently holding the two guides 10 and 10 together. The guides 10 and 10 are adapted to form guides for the paper and the film or negative which is clamped and prevented it'rom accidentally slipping by the guide 10 A cover plate 14: is adapted to close the opening 7 after the paper to be printed upon has been placed over the said opening. This cover plate has two rods 15 extending from one edge thereof and the free ends of these rods are adapted to be received into the elongated openings provided by two staples 16 in the top plate 5, thus providing hinges upon which the said cover plate 14 may be swung. By having the openings in the staples l6 elongated the cover plate 14: will always lie flat upon the paper placed over the opening 7. A metal strip 17 is pivoted to one corner of the cover plate 1 1 and its free end can be swung to any position on the cover plate.
The metal strip 17 provides a bearing portion for a lever 18 pivoted to the top plate 5 and slidably attached by means of the bracket 19 to the cover plate 14. This lever is adapted to engagethe metal strip 17 at any position of the latter on the cover plate 14.
Pivoted to one edge of the top plate 5 is a bar 20 carrying an. operating lever 21 and an auxiliary lever 22. The operating lever 21 is connected by a strap 23 to the cover plate 14: and is adapted to engage a bearing 24 rigidly attached to the lever 18. An extension 25 is carried by the lever 21 and a suitable contact member 26 is attached to the extension and insulated therefrom. This have been brought together, thus contact member 26 is adapted to engage a pair of contact members 27 attached to, but insulated from, the cabinet 1 which contact members 27 form the terminals of the circuit o1 the electric lights 3. lhis circuit is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. A circuit maker and. breaker, to be hereafter described, is shown diagrammatically at 15 in Fig. 1.
From the above it will be seen that the operating lever 21, the lever 18, the metal strip 17, and the cover plate 1-lare all indirectly attached together, and that by reason of the strip 17 being swingingly mount ed the pressure applied to the lever 21 can be applied to any part of the cover plate 14: through the instruinentality ot the said strip 17 and the lever 18.
The operation of my invention is as follows :The mask plates 10 and 13 being adjusted to provide the right sized opening, the paper or film to be printed upon is placed over the said opening and under the guides 10 and 10, the desired distance to provide the desired border on the paper. The lever 21 is then swung to the position shown in Fig. 1, and the cover plate 1% thus located over the paper to be operated upon. The metal strip 17 is then swung to the position on the cover plate at which it is desired to apply the pressure. This being done the lever 21. is pressed downwardly and through the lever 18 and the strip 17, pressure is applied to the cover plate 14. At the same time the contacts and 27 I closing the circuit of the electric lights. l -fhen the printing has been completed, the lever 21 is raised carrying with it the rest of the parts, and the contact between 26 an d 27 is broken, thus breaking the circuit of the lights and permitting access to the paper which has been printed, and upon which a white margin has been left,
What I claim is z 1. In an electric printing machine, a cabinet provided with an opening, a mask plate slidably mounted along each of two sides of the opening and located at right angles to each other, and a slidably mounted angular mask plate cooperating with the two hefore-mentioned mask plates to vary the size of the opening and to provide a marginal edge on the paper to be printed.
2. In an electric printing machine, a cabinet provided with an opening, groove e3:- tending along each of two sides oi? the opening and located at right angles to each other, a pair or mas plates each. having a block secured to one end thereof, said blocks being received within said grooves whereby Copies of the mask plates are slidably mounted, and a slidably mounted angular mask plate cooperating with the two before inentioned mask plates to vary the size of the opening and to provide a marginal edge on the paper to be printed.

In an electric printing n'iachine, a cabinet provided with an opening, a mask plate slidably mounted along each of two sides of the opening and located at right angles to each other, a diagonally extending groove formed one corner of the opening, an angular mask plate, a block secured to mask plate and sliding in said groove whereby said angular mask plate can be adjusted to cooperate witli the two beitore-inein'ioncd mask plates to vary the size of the opening and to provide a marginal edge on the to be printed.
