DAN COLLINS, or BAKER, oli/Econ.
LINEMAN DEVICE.
Y b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAN COLLINS, a c1tizen of the United States, residing at Baker,
.iii the county of Baker and State of Oregon,
have invented certain useful Improvements in Linemens Devices, of rwhich the following is a specification, referencebeing had v tlierein'to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to a scaffold and more particularly to the class of linemens devices for use on upright supports such-.as
telegraph poles, posts, columns, trees or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein a support for a workman can be mounted upon an upright support to be occupied while he is at work without possibility of the slipping thereof and also iscapable of enables a workman to mount the upright support and execute work thereon, the device being simple in construction, thoroughly reliable-and efficient in its purpose, strong, readily and easily operated and inexpensive in manufacture.
Vith these and other objects inview the invention consists inthe features of construction, combination of elements, andv arrangement of parts hereinafter fully de'- Y scribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in'vthe hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention applied to a pole.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view tlrough the pole showing the device in top p an. v
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed from the pole. l l
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of modified form ef the device claims l specificati@ of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 13, 1918. Appiication mea December 1, 1916f serieu Nb. 134,456.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a further modiiication.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of ya still further modification. Y
Similar reference characters indicate coiresponding parts throughout the several views inthe drawings.
Referring tothe drawings in detail, more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 thereof the device comprises a substantially Ufshape frame 10 preferably made from metal although the same may be made from any other suitable material having the required rigidity and strengthened with the limbs thereof formed with depending legs 11 which may be made separate therefrom and fastened thereto, and are provided with teeth f 12 which are adapted to bite into an upright support when theframe is positioned thereon. The legs 11 whichare at right angles to the frame 10V can engage with any upright or with cross members of a building structure or edifice for the hanging of the frame thereon. Passed through the limbs of the frame 10 transversely thereof is the pivot rod 13 which is fastened therein in any suitable manner and can be of any desirable form fo-r the swinging, engagement thereon of a pair of hanger arms or jaws 14; which are formed with curvilinear or hook ends 15 which embrace and grip a portion of the upright support when the frame is positioned thereon, the arms or' jaws 14 being swingingly connected to the rod 13- in any suitable manner and are capable of adjustment thereon so as to accommodate the arms or jaws to different sizes of upright supports.
Swingingly mounted upon Vthe pivot rod 13 within the frame 10 is a grab member comprising a lever 16 preferably made from a single piece of materialbent at its lower` .portion to form a grab jaw 17 having a ser-V rated terminal 18 while intermediateuthe loosely surrounds the pintle rod 13 :and the upper end portion of the lever is bent to form a seat rest 20 on which is mounted a suitable seat 21 to be occupied by the user and the jaw 17 will have its biting terminal A ends ofV this llever is a pintle sleeve 1,9 whichv 18 engaged therein when the seat is occupied as the weight of the occupant acts upon the jaw and in this manner the device is'se-f curely and positively held in position. for
use at any elevated point upon the upright' support without possibility oit' slipping while the user 'is at work thereon.-
In Fig. 4 is shown a modilied fornrof the device wherein the same comprises the lever 22 forming at its lower endportion--a prop 23 while the upper end portion servesfas-fa seat.y restfor: a seat-*24 andthis leverimmze-l diate its ends is provided with an eye Qino whiclrare lo'osely-k engaged hanger Aarms lor' jaws Q6 having the-curvilinear or hook ends- 27 to embrace the uprightsupport,the-ter--- minals of the propvend 'belngadapted-toi bite intotheflatter when thefarmsw-orffjafws 26 embrace the same lso-that the device will 1 be securely and firmly-mounted thereon for the use of a workman.
In llB`ig. 5 of the drawing there -is= shown f. a furtheiumodification of-A the; inventionV whereinv the lever .28 :whichr forms 'a propw and; seat ysupport is provided lwith an eye'I 29 in which nis loosely engaged va singlet: hanger arm` 30. having ,the vcurvilinearforf hook end 3l to embracethe nprightsupportwhile ythe prop end of the'lever-QS bites thereinto whenweight'is applied to ther-seat end of said leverk and in this ina-nner (a1-Work@ man will .be supported for the executionl of' work v'upon ,the upright support.
In Fig. 6 there is shown-another modii'ieav tion of theinvention whereinthe combined prop and-seatsupport 32 is swinginglysup:` ported upon a pivot rod-33 mounted on the frame 34 which isA formediivith a loopvB .to embracev'the .upright support and-is applied-iby slippingl thev same overa-thei-head end.vv thereof,.the end portionsfothe frame 84 bei-- ing bent downwardly vat rightfangle'sthereto fr as at 36 to form bearingshoulders-Which 1,- are adapted :to .abut against across :member i upon Vthe `uprightr support.A Connected with one of, these down-turned'portions: 36 .of the t frame 34 is one end of a flexible cable .orsi rope.35. which is adaptedfzto bewrappedhy about. theaipriglit support and fastened in' any suitableananner so that the-:said frame willbe positively and'rmly heldfuponthef upright support 1 afterl being positioned thereon.
Itwillbe seen thata the device-constructed. as hereinbeforedescribed is comparatively; lightyet amply strong for. use,` that Lit cans Copies of this patentlmayvbe obtained forrvegcentsr vice is applicable to many other purposes, as
-the-mounting of vthe same upon edifiees in the course of construction for use by carpentersor other workmen, and said device is readily adjustable for the positioning thereof at different elevations upon supports.'-`
Itisto be'clearly' understood that changes and various modifications may be made in the invention as may. come .properly ywithin ,Y
the scope of -the appendedclaims without departing frolnathez'spirit of theinvention-Vv .or sacrificing kany of its advantages.` v
