IMPROVEMENT lN STREET-CAR BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,525, dated J une 4, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Street-Oar Brakes, invented by JOHN STEPHENSON, of the city, county, and State of New York.
This invention relates to brakes for cars of street and other railroads; and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the car-wheel, giving an edge view of the car-floor with the brake attached. Fig. 2 is a section on the line as as of Fig. 1, showing a cross-section of the brake or clog, and the method of connecting it with the brakebar. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing the wedgeform of the dovetail projection on back of clog.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In street-cars the clog-bar is usually of iron, and its connection with the clog by the various methods hitherto adopted has not been satisfactory. Some plans fail because they are not secure, others are complicated, consuming much time and unnecessary material in repairs. By my invention I remedy these objections, simplify the construction, and facilitate repairs.
I make the clog A as usual, except that the side opposite the wheel is of dovetail and wedge-shaped form a portion of its length, and with a recess in the clog-bar B of corresponding form, thus making a male-and-female connection, so that the clog-bar placed in conjunction with the clog is retained in position by its gravity while the weight of the clog is sustained by the rod 0, which is hinged or turns in the eye-plate D, seen in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pendent clog A, provided with dovetail projection on the back thereof, and constructed to support the clog-bar B, having corresponding recess, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN STEPHENSON.
