and useful Improvements in Coil-Cases and.
Terminals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to'the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a case for code or other electrical devices, and to an improved terminal with which the case is fitted.
The object of the invention is to provide a case of this character with a terminal fitting which is at once efiicient, durable, producible at a low cost, and adapted to be readily secured to the wall of the case.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a case fitted with four of the improved terminals.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the said case, a portion of the structure being broken away to illustrate the interior construction and arrangement.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section on. the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of a the terminal structure.
Referring in detail to the construction illustrated, 1 is a bottom member of the case, it being made preferably of metal, and in the construction shown it is merged with a base structure (largely broken away) by which the case is supported. 2 is-the tubular side wall of the case which is preferably formed of non-conducting material, a highly compressed and waterproofcd paper fiber having been found satisfactory. The upper end of the case is closed by a cover 3 which may be stamped from metal and secured in any desired manner, as by screws 4.
The case illustrated is made to receive two part of coils 5, 5, and a condenser 6. the said coils terminal fittings designated as entireties by sis 7 and 8. Each pair of the terminals serves one of the coils 5, which has its leads 9 and for all.

The terminal fittings are alike in construction, and a description of one.wi1l suffice The terminals are of the binding post sort and each comprises a screw-threaded stem or post 11 which is carried by a base 12. The base is preferably stamped from sheet metal and the stem is rigidly secured to it by riveting, the base being perforated to receive the stem, as indicated in Figs. 3
and 5. For purposes of economy I prefer to form the stem of a suitable quality of screw steel and the base 12 of brass. The said base is formed with prongs 12 which are adapted to be bent at right-angles. to the base so as to pass through the side wall of the case. i
To receive each of the terminals the side wall of the case has a hole 13 and a pair of holes 14 punched therein, the hole 13 being adapted to receive the stem 11, while the holes l l receive the bent prongs 12 of the base 12, said prongs being bent over and clenched down, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The stem 11 and base 12 should be united and applied to the side wall of the case in such a manner that a flat face of the base is rigidly clamped against either the inner or outer face of the side wall 2. I prefer the construction illustrated in which the base is disposed against the inner face of the side Wall. Y

been given one or more turns around the stem 11, has its end eleetrically connected, as by soldering. at 15 to one of the prongs 12.
The ends of the prongs 12*, the end part of the lead 10. and the holes 14 are covered by a soft rubber washer 16 which surrounds the stem 11 and is pressed against the side wall of the case by a molded terminal fitting 17. This fitting may be formed of any suitable non-conducting material such, for example, as bakelite. and has a main part 17 and a brunch part 17 which are respectively perforated to receive the stem 11. and an electrical conductor 18. The molded fitting 17 is formed with a shoulder 17'to receive a washer l9, and the end of the conductor 18 is clamped between this washer 19 and a nut 20, the screwing home of the nut 20 serving to simultaneously compress the rubber Washer 16 and to tightly clamp the end of the conductor 18.
In assembling the electrical devices illustrated the coils and condenser are inserted in the case and, the coils having been suitably interconnected with the condenser and the lead-s 9 and 10 permanently attached to the terminals, the parts are permanently secured and sustained by filling the space surrounding the coils and condenser by suitable insulation 21 which is poured in a hot and semi-liquid state and then 'hardens on coolin The cover 3 can then be secured in position and the other parts of the terminal fittings applied.
It will be obvious to one familiar with vthe art in question that while the materials which I employin the production of my improved case and terminal fittings are inexpensive and the construction simple and capable of production at small labor cost, a structure is secured which is strong and durable and adapted to effectively perform itsintendcd functions. In particular, the method of attaching the base of the binding post to the wall of the case, I have found to be especially satisfactory, both as to lOW- ness of cost and permanence.
Furthermore, while the base of the binding post is made of brass and can, therefore, readily be electrically connected by soldering with the leads 9 or 10, the construction permits the use of another and cheaper material for the stem part of the terminal. Again, the soft rubber washer 16, by reason of its resilience, not only serves to protect the molded fitting 17 from injury, but also acts to effectively cover the prongs 12 of the base member, the electrical connection at 15, and the apertures 1-1 in the wall of the case.

In a structure of the character described, the combination of a case having a non-condm-ting wall formed with" apertures, and a binding post terminal comprising a metallic member having a stem part and a base part which 1S formed with integral prongs, the base part of the said metallic member being arranged on the inside of the case wall with the stem part extending through one of the wall apertures and the base prongs extending through other of said apertures and gripping the wall.
3. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a case having a wall of non-conducting material, an electrical device therein, a binding post terminal comprising a metallic member having a stem part of ferrous metal and a base part of brass, the said base part being formed with integral prongs which extend through and grip the Wall of the case, and a lead from the electrical device electrically connected to the base part of the said metallic member.

In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a case having an apertured wall of non-conducting material, an electrical device in the case, a binding post terminal comprising a metallic member having a stem part and a base part which is formed with integral prongs, the said base part being arranged against one face of the case Wall with the prongs extending through the Wall apertures and gripping the Wall, and a lead from the electrical deviceextending through one of the Wall apertures and electrically connected to the metallic member outside the case.
5. In apparatus of the character de scribed, the combination of a case having an apertured wall of non-conducting material, an electrical device in the case, a binding post terminal comprising a metallic member having a stem part and a base part which is formed with integral prongs, the said base part being arranged against the inner face of the case wall with the stem part extending outward through a wall aperture and the base prongs extending through other wall apertures and tightly gripping the wall, and a lead from the electrical device extending through one of the prong apertures of the wall and electrically connected to one of the base prongs outside the case.

In a structure of the character described, the combination of a case having an aperturcd Wall of non-conducting material, a binding post terminal comprising a metallic member having a screw -threaded stem part and a base part which is formed with integral prongs, the stem part extending through one of the wall apertures and the base prongs extending through other apertures and gripping the wall, a resilient washer arranged on the stem next to the wall to cover the prong apertures therein, and a metallic washer and nut on the stem to clamp an electric conductor, the said resilient washer being pressed against the wall when the nut is tightened.
