IMPROVEMENT IN RUBBER PADS AND BLOCKS FOR STEPS, SIDEWALKS, 8m.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,502, dated June 4, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Sidewalk, &c., invented by JOHN 'MoFFET, of the city, county, and State of New York.
My invention consists of a combination of soft vulcanized India-rubber blocks or pads with metal, wood, stone, or other sidewalk,
pavement, or stair-plates, and the like, to prevent slipping, particularly when wet, the said India-rubber pads being of any approved size, and fitted into sockets or holes in the plates to project above the surface of said plates slightly, for the feet to rest on them with sufficient pressure to prevent slipping, for which the India rubber is naturally well adapted, as is well known.
In the case of the application of the said India-rubber blocks or pads to thin stair-plates of brass, they will preferably extend below the plate, which will be countersunk or concaved around the hole in any suitable way to provide room for the said pads, which will be slightly larger at the base than in the part extending up through the hole.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of a sidewalk paved with a metal plate having rubber pads combined with it according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3' is a section of a flag-stone with the said pads applied to it; Fig. 4 is a section of a wood plank with the said pads of rubber'combined with it.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the metal, stone, wood, or other plates, and B the India-rubber pads.
In the case of a metal plate or frame, it may be cast with sockets or holes for the pads in any way. If the holes pass through the plate, said pads will be sufliciently large and the holes will be properly shaped to prevent the pads from being forced through, but the holes will be sufficiently undercut to hold the pads in, said pads being compressed when forced in; but in all matters of this kind I propose to be governed by the nature of the case, not being limited to any particular way of applying or securing the pads.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of soft India-rubber pads with metal, wood, stone, or other sidewalk. pavement, or stair-plates, and the like, substantially as specified. J OHN MOFFET.
