To all whom it may concern .1
. Be itknown that I, FREDERICK A. STEVENS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence,.inthe county of Providence; and
State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
to those of the finger piece type.
The principal purposes of my invention are to insure a smooth movement of the operating levers upon their pivot members; to minimize the friction between the operating springs and the journal portions of the levers; to prevent any weakening of the spring by continued use; to insure free action of the spring; and to attain these ends in a simple and strong structure.
My invention consists, therefore, in the means and mechanism for producing the results above specified substantially as hereinafter described and claimed, and as shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of eyeglasses embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a plan view of one end of the same,
Fig. 3, a section enlarged on line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, an enlarged section on line 44 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5, a detail view of one of the annular sections of the sleeve portion.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.
The frame of the eyeglasses or spectacles may be of any form desired for carrying the operative parts. In the construction herein shown 6 is a bridge, having end supports 7 carrying straps 10 and attaching lugs 11 for the lenses 12.
Posts 9 have reduced threaded portions 11 upon their ends engaging threaded perforations 13 in the supports 7 the resultant shoulders 14 upon the posts contacting with the supports. Each operating arm or lever 16 has a thumb piece 17 on its forward end, and a nose guard 18 upon its rear end, while in its intermediate portion is an opening 19 to allow the passage of a post therethrough. Integral with the lever is a vertical cylin- Specificationof I.et1:ersIlatent. [Patented 1 Application'filed October 13,1917. SerialNo. 196,377.
asectional sleeve indicated in a general way by 22. This" sleeve is {completed by an end annulus or ring 24, andoneT ormore rings 25 :1n:.COI1taCl7fW1l}lI eachnother resting against the flange 20. The ring 24 is in slidable contact with the under side of a head 27' on the end of the post provided with a slot 28.
All the rings are rotatable upon the post.
A helical operating spring is provided for.
each lever, and the coils thereof embrace the sectional sleeve. In the present instance the coils are equal in number to the rings and flange, but this is not essential. The uppermost coil 30 embraces the ring or section 24; the lowermost coil 31 embraces the flange or section 20; and the intermediate coils 32 en gage the intermediate rings 25.
The coil 30 is continued to form an arm 34 which bears against the rear of an adj acent strap 10; and the coil 31 is extended into an arm 35 having a bent end 36 engaging the lever 16.
The helical'springs induce the guards 18 FQZEDEBVIGKAISTEVEINS, oFPRoviDENc R nEiisn aD,1 smN0RTosm tmsam toward each other, while manual compression of the thumb pieces 17 distend the guards to release the structure from the nose. The resultant vibration of the levers imparts to the several coils not only movements of expansion and contraction, but also a circular or rotary movement of varying extent. The lower coils have a greater relative circular or rotative movement than the upper coils. Hence the corresponding an nular sections which the several coils embrace have a separate, independent, circular movement of different distances. Thus there is practically no friction between the coils and the sectional sleeve; an easy and even movement of the levers is insured; and all wear upon spring is avoided whereby the life and strength of the latter is prolonged.
