To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester air-l State of Pennsylvania, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Superheater Construction for Boilers, of which the following is a specification. My invention consists of an improved superheater construction for boilers and is particularly adapted for use in connection with upright boilers including two or more boiler units.
One object of my invention is to provide a superheater structure in which the amount or degree of heat flowing thereto can be con.- trolled.
Another object is to so construct the superheater structure that certain of the parts which comprise the superheater structure also assist inguiding or deflecting the products of combustion to the boiler units.
A further object is to so make my invention that it will be of simple construction and can be quickly and-easily installed.
' These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which v Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of an upright boiler constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring to Fig. l of the drawings, 1
re resents a boiler casing including two boiler units 2 and 3 of the upright type.
The boiler unit 2 consists principally of' drums 4 and 5 located respectively atthe top and bottom thereof, and connected by a plurality of water tubes 6. These tubes6 are inclined and receive heat from the fire box 7 ,the inclination of the tubes 6 being such that certain of said tubes extend upwardly and over the fire box, the drum 4: being lo-' cated directly over the fire box while the drum 5 is located on one side of a wall 8 which projects above the bottom of the c'asin 1, and at the rear end of the fire box.
The boiler unit 3 is spaced from and to the rear of the boiler unit 2, and also consists principally of two drums 9 and 10 located respectively at the top. and bottom theerof and joined by a plurality of water tubes 11.
The boiler unit 3 has a drum 9 located at a higher level than the drum 4 of the unit 2, and the drum 10 is located at a higher level than the drum 5 of the boiler unit 2 as in various forms of boilers of this type.
By this arrangement, the drum 9 forms the steam collectingdrum and is connected by a series of pipes 12 with the drum 4. In
like manner, the drum 5 is connected by a series of pipes13 with the drum 10.
In carrying out my invention, I provide I a baffle 14 which runs longitudinally of the pipes 6 of the boiler unit 2, and extends upwardly from the drum This baflie is preferably made of a series of tile which vertically and intersects the rear of the tubes 6, and extends beyond the upper end of the baffle 15. This bafile 17 stops short of the top 18 of the casing 1, and thus provides a passage 19 through which the series-of tubes 12 pass.
Furthermore, by the above noted positioning of the baflies 15 and 17 a passage 20 is provided, the function of which will be hereinafter described.
A baflie wall 21 extends substantially vertical throughout a portion of its length, and at its top 15 slightly curved and intersects the drum 9. The lower end of the baflie wall 21 substantially intersects the rear tubes 6 of the boiler tube at a position above the drum 5 and is then turned in the form of an arch 22, said arch extending adjacent the forward tubes 11 of the boiler unit 3. other bafile arch 23 is formed adjacent the uppermost tubes of the series of tubes 13 which connect the drums 5 and 10.
The boiler unit 3 has a longitudinally extending bafile 2% of thesame general construction as the baflie 14 above referred to, and this baflie 2% extends from the drum 10 to a position below the drum 9. A rear baflle wall 25 extends downwardly to the rearbf the. tubes 11 and terminates at a position above the drum 10L A damper or valve 27 consists of a plate which, asillustrated, is pivoted between its ends and is designed to be turned into various positions between the upper ends of the baflies 15 and 17, and if desired, it can be turned into the dot-and-dash line position in order to completely close the upper end of the passage 20. Thus by the provision of the baflles 15 and 17, the damper 27 and bafile wall 21, a superheating compartment is provided adjacent the top of the casing 1 and between the drums l and 9. This superheater chamber is formed between the drum 1 and bafile 15 and the drum 9 and upper part of the bafiie wall 21.
A superheater 26 comprising a plurality of convolutions of tube, projects into said compartment and between the upper portion of the baflie 17 and the upper portion of the baflle wall 21.
In operation, the products of combustion within the combustion chamber 7 contact with the forward surface of the baflle 14, and pass upwardly into engagement with the drum -1 and through the passage 16, thus heating the drum at and the tubes of the boiler unit which are located forward of the bafile 14.
The products after passing through the passage 16, enter the superheater compartment above referred to, and when the damper 27 is open, a portion of said products will pass downwardly through the passage 20 and between the tubes 6 which are located to the rear of the battle 14.
Another portion of the hot gases and products of combustion passes through the superheater compartment and downwardly between the baffle 17 and the forward surface of the baffle wall 21, thence between the lower portions of the tubes 6 which are located to the rear of the baflie 14. These products afterward pass through the passage provided between the arch 22 and the baflle 23, through the spaces between the tubes 11 which are located forward of the baffle 24, and then upwardly into engagement with the drum 9 and through the nassage provided between the upper part of the baflle 21 and the lower portion of the drum 9, and finall tween the bafile wa 25 and the rear face of the bafiie 24, and then upwardly through the flue 28.
The damper 27, when in its closed position, causes all of the products of combustion passing through the passage 16 to pass through the superheater'compartment, and thereby engage the superheater and heat the steam therein to a high degree, it being noted that the superheater receives its steam from the drum 9, and that the superheated steam passes outwardly through the pipe 29.
When it is desired to reduce the amount of the products of combustion passing through the superheater compartment, the damper 27 is turned for example, into the position pass downwardly beshown in full lines in the drawing when a portion of the products of combustion will pass through the passage 20 instead of going through the superheater compartment.
It will be further noted that the damper acts as a deflector and ides a portion of the prodticts of combustion into the passage 20, and between the upper portion of the tubes which are located to the rear of the baffle 14.
It will be further noted that by having the baflie wall 21 extend downwardly and intersect the rear of the boiler unit 2, a contracted opening is provided at the bottom whereby all of the products of combustion are caused to pass between the rear tubes of the boiler unit 2, and that both the passage 20 and the lower portion of the superheater compartment communicate with the space between the rear face of the baflle 14 and the forward face of the bafiie wall 21.
It will be noted that the space between the bafiie 17 and the front face of said bafiie wall 21 forms a passage 30 which leads from the superheater compartment as does also the passa e 20. These two passages 20 and 30 lead ownwardly from the superheater compartment and combine at their lower parts so that the products of combustion passing through both of the passages 20 and 30 pass outwardly through the passage 31 which is formed between'the lower end of the baflle wall 21 and the lower end of the baflle 14.
It will be further noted that the partition 17 also acts as a deflector to intercept the products of combustion and thereby cause them to be deflected between the rear tubes of the boiler unit 2, and thereby cause the etficient heating of the same.
In the modification of my invention shown in Fig. 2, I provide a chamber 32 immeditely below the top of the casing 1 and between the boiler units 2 and 3. This chamber 32 is formed between the upper end of a bafile wall 33 and drum 9 and the drum 4 and a bafile 35, a divisional baflie being located between the u per end of said baflle wall 33 and said bae 35. The baffle 35 is of simi lar construction to the baflie 15 illustrated in Fig. 1 and extends at an incline to the tubes of the forward boiler unit 2, it being noted that the boiler units 2 and 3 and their connecting drums and pipes are of similar construction to those described in connection with Fig. 1, and I have therefore given similar parts corresponding reference numerals.
T e location of the baflie 34 between the up er portion of the baflie wall 33 and the ba e 35 not only serves to form the superheater chamber 32, but also provides a passage 36 which leads downwardly from the upper portion of the chamber 32 and under certin conditions permits the products of combustion or a certain portion of the products of combustion to pass downwardly between the tubes of the boiler unit 2 which are located to the rear of a bafiie 37, it being noted that the baffle 37 is of similar construction to the bafiie 14 in Fig. 1.
The baflle. 34 is substantially L-shaped in cross section and the lower leg thereof extends substantially parallel with a forwardly extending portion- 38 of the baflle wall 33. The portion 38 substantially intersects the tubes of the boiler unit 2 and with said lower leg of the baflie 34 provides a passage 39 for the products of combustion after they pass downwardly from the superheater chamber 32.
The passage 39 is located adjacent the upper portion of the boiler unit, therefore any of the products of combustion passing therethrough will be caused to fpass downwardly between the rear tubes 0 said boiler unit 2.
The bafiie wall 33 also has a portion 40 which intersects with the forward end of the portion 38 and extends at an angle downwardly and adjacent the rear tubes of said boiler unit 2. This portion 40, at its lower end, extends rearwardly in the form of an arch 41, said arch-terminating adjacent the forward tubes of the boiler unit 3.
A bafile 42 extends between the drums 5 and 10 in a manner similar to the baffle 23 above noted in connection with Fig. 1 and a battle 43 is positionedbetween the tubes of the boiler unit 3 and extends upwardly from the drum 10. 4
It will be noted that the formation of the bafiie wall including the portions 38, 40, and 41 provides a chamber 44 between the boiler units, this chamber being serviceable for a'feed water heater.
A damper 45 is hinged at 46 to the top of the baflie 34 and is of such size as to extend to the upper end of the baffle 35 when entirely closed. This'dampr may be actuated by any means extending to the outside of the boiler casing, and serves to permit various amounts of the products of combustion to pass upwardly from the fire box 7 and downwardly through the passage 36.
It will be further noted that when the valve is open, that it serves as a deflector to cause some of the products of combustion to go downwardly through the passage 36 without affecting or engaging the superheater.
On the contrary, when the damper is closed, the arrangement of the battles is such as to cause the gases and other products of.
combustion to come in contact with the superheater by passing first upwardly and then downwardly through the superheating compartment into the passage 39, thence forwardly into engagement with the uppermost portions of the rear tubes of the boiler unit 2. then downwardly between the baffles 37 and portion 40 of the bafile wall 33, and
thence between the arch 41, baffle 42, then upwardly between the baffle 43 and bafiie wall 33 to heat the forward tubes of the boiler unit 3, then over the top of the baflie 43 and again downwardly between the rear tubes of the boiler unit 3, after which they pass upwardly and out the flue 28 in a manner described in connection with Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have shown a boiler and superheater construction of. the same general form as described in connection with Fig. 2 with the exception that I provide a baflle 47 instead of the baflie 35 above described.
The baffle 47 extends substantially at right angles to the tubes of the boiler unit 2 instead of at an incline as does the baflie 35 in Fig. 2. By thus arranging the bafiie 47 at right angles, a less expensive construction is attained and for some purposes is more desirable, since it permits a greater portion of the products of combustion to directly engage the uppermost portion of the superheater prior to passing downwardly through the superheater compartment. In all other respects, the construction of Fig. 3 is similar to that described in connection with Fig. 2, and I have therefore given similar parts corresponding reference numerals.
Itw1ll' be noted that by having the superheater arranged so as to extend downwardly from the ,top of the boiler casing into the I end outside of the boiler having a valve 49 for regulating the amount of flow of the feed water.
\Vhile I have described my invention as taking a" articular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended clalm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as. new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
