RAILWAY DUMPING-CAR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID PAUL DEIBLER, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Jersey Shore, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway Dumping-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as railway rolling stock and more particularly relates to a railway dumping car.
As the primary aim and object the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the character mentioned, so constructed as to conveniently handle coal and like substances in order that when the car is positioned on suitable trestle work, the bottom of the hopper will be opened so as to deposit the contents of the car in a pile beneath the trestle work.
It is an equall important object of this invention to provide manually operable means on the hopper for opening and closing the doors at the bottom of the hopper to allow the contents to pass therefrom.
More particularly the present invention embraces the provision of cooperative means on the hopper body for removably locking the door operating means against movement to prevent accidental actuation of the doors and the consequential loss of the contents.
More specific objects of this invention c011- sist in the provision of means acting in conjunction with the door operating means for assuring of the proper actuation thereof; to also provide improved means within the hopper body for increasing the rigidity thereof.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high. v
Other improvements and novel details 1n the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and Specification of Letters Patent.

satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a Side elevation thereof;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a frame 1 of a rectangular configuration rotatably supported by wheels 2 which operate on a track 3. An improved hopper body indicated in its entirety by the numeral 4 is supported on the frame 1 through the instrumentality of suitable apparatus 5. In the present instance the hopper body may be said to consist of sides 6 connected at the upper ends by short end pieces while between the sides and extending from the lower end pieces are opposed and inclined bottom sections 8 which together with the lower portions of the sides project slightly beneath the frame and terminate in spaced relation with each other leaving an opening 9. .A longitudinal brace 10 is arranged between the bottom sections to increase the rigidity thereof andv likewise spaced transversebraces 11 are arranged between the sides intermediate the ends thereof and directly above the opening 9. A support 12 of an inverted V shaped conformation in cross section is rigidly mounted on the upper ends of the transverse braces and between the sides of thebody and serves to deflect coal or like substances arranged in the car toward opposed substantially rectangular discharge openings 13 formed between the braces and the adjacent outer edges of the bottom sections. Substantially rectangular doors 1a are pivotall mounted onthe transverse braces by means of suitable hinges 15, the outer and side edges thereof being recessed so as to entirely close the openings when swung into a closed position.
With a View toward providing improved means for operating the doors a shaft 1.7 has one of its ends journaled in one side of the body beneath the support 12 and its opposite end journaled in a bracket 18 mounted on the longitudinal brace. An arm 19 ex tends from the inner end of the shaft and at right angles to the longitudinal axis thereof while a link 20 has one end pivotally connected to the outer end of the arm. A pair of links 21 having bifurcated ends 22 are arranged about the inner end of the link 21 and pivotally connected thereto by means of suitable fastening devices 23, which are smaller in diameter than the openings in the link 21 so that a slight play is permitted, while the opposite or outer ends of the links 21 are pivoted through the instrumentality of suitable fastening devices 24 to brackets 25 carried by the doors. The opposite end of the shaft is squared as indicated by the numeral 26 for removably receiving an operating handle 27 so that when the shaft is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrows in the drawings the doors will be alternately opened and closed by continuous rotation thereof. By this arrangement when the doors are in a closed position the bifurcated ends of the links abut each other and brace the doors so as to hold them in a closed position and they are held in this position until the shaft is rotated.
Cooperating with the shaft so as to assure of the proper rotation thereof is a ratchet wheel 28 mounted in the squared ends thereof and with which cooperates a gravity pawl 29 pivotally mounted on the adjacent side of the body and normally held in an operative position with respect to the ratchet wheel by means of the weighted end 30.
As intimated, improved means have been provided for locking the shaft against accidental rotation so as to consequently prevent accidental loss of the contents of the hopper body. In reducing this feature of the invention to practice a bracket 31 is mounted on the side of the body in proximity to the shaft while an arm 32has one end pivotally mounted to the bracket and is provided in termediate its ends with a round opening 33 for removably engaging astud 31 carried by the body between the bracket and the shaft and is further provided with a squared opening 35 for removable engagement with the squared end 26 of the shaft simultaneously with the engagement of the arm with the stud. The stud is provided with a transverse opening 36 for removably receiving a lock pin 37.
The mode of operation of the present invention may be reviewed as follows:
Assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and it is desired to empty the contents therefrom the lock pin 37 is removed so that the arm may be swung into released position to permit of the engagement of the handle 27 and the squared end 26 of the shaft whereupon by rotating the shaft in the direction of the arrows the arm 19 will move upwardly in a corresponding direction and draw the links upwardly to open the doors so that the contents may be discharged through the openings. Upon continued rotary movement of the shaft the inner end of the link 21 is swung in a circle and when the arm assumes its former position the doors will be likewise moved to a closed position and held in such position by the links 21. It is to be observed in this connection that the particular construction and relation of the links and the arm permit of the entire rotation of the shaft to open and close the doors.
In view of the foregoing description it is believed that a further detail description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is thought the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and'not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent, is
1. A device of the character described including a supporting frame, a hopper body mounted thereon and provided with opposed discharge openings at the bottom thereof, pivotally mounted doors for rcmovably closing the openings, a shaft journaled in the body, an operable connection between the shaft and the doors whereby when the shaft is rotated in one direction the doors will be opened and closed, cooperative means on, the body and on the shaft for assuring of the rotation of the shaft in one direction, a stud carried by the body, a pivotally mounted arm on the body for removable engagement with the stud and the shaft for preventing rotation of the shaft, and means engageable with'the stud for holding the arm in a locked position to consequently prevent accidental actuation of the doors.
'2. A device of the character described including a supporting frame, a hopper body consisting of sides and end pieces, an inclined bottom section terminating in spaced relation at their lower ends, a brace disposed longitudinally in the body for increasing the rigidity thereof, a pair of spaced transverse braces in the body for cooperating with the lower edges of the bottom section to provide discharge openings, a support of an inverted V-shaped configuration in cross section disposed on the braces and connected to the sides of the body for bracing the sides, a shaft journaled in one side of the body and in the longitudinal brace at a point directly beneath the support, the inner end of the shaft terminating approximately medially of the support, an arm connected to and extending approximately at right angles from the shaft, doors pivotally mounted on the transverse braces for removably closing the openings, a link pivotally connected to the outer end of the arm, and other links pivotally connected to the outer end of the first mentioned link and also pivotally connected to the doors near the outer edges thereof so that upon continued rotation of the shaft, the doors Will be alternately opened and closed, means for operating the shaft, and means for locking the shaft.
