UNITED SIATES'PATENT OFFICE.

fipebllcatlon of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6-, 1918.
Application flea December a, 1911. Serial Io. 205,101.
To'oll whom'it may ooncem: 1 Be it known that I, GIOVANNI RAOCAGNI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State'of Connecticut, have invented certain durability.
A furt er object of the device is the provision of a metallic railwa tie'that is'easy and. inexpensive to menu acture, arranged for preventing water'fi-om collecting thereinand ha" readily operable lockingmeans for rails or' holding the lattertransversely' positioned u on the tie at the; proper distance a art or forming'a track.
A stil further object of the invention is the provision of a tie ada ted for mounting railway rails thereonan so arranged that the rule may be locked points ad'acent the opposite ends of the tie.
In the awing forming apart of this application and in which like designating char refer to corresponding parts throughout the several View:i
Figure 1 is a side. evation of my form of tie partially broken away having two rails shown in transverse section operatively locked thereon.
Fig. 2 is a top lan view thereof.
fig. 3 is an on view of the same showing two ties in their operative positions, one o the same being shown in vertical transverse section.
Fig. 41s a-vertical lo itudinal sect1o nal view through the end portion of a tie having the rail mounted thereon with the locking member released, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the bearing blocks employed.
My railway tie in its preferred embodiment broadly consists of a metal body 10, rectangular in cross section, of substantially the usual dimensions of an ordinary tie but preferably being hollow with a chamber for overl gthe base 16 of the or unlocked from 11 extending substantially throughout the length thereof open at the bottom of the tie as at 1 2 with longitudinal slots 18 commu meeting with the said chamber adjacent the opposite ends-ofthe top 14 of the said body.
A transversely arranged rib 16 is arra ed upon the top of the body 10 s aced inwa rfily of each of the slots 18 a su cient distance for receiving the bases 16 of railsl'l slightly overlying e slots 13 when the rails are opcratwely positioned transversely seated upon the top 14 of the said body. ,It will be undercs'ltood that; when the rails' 17 are so a;- range u on. e ti en a' beneath t. e ribs 15 the rails will be icg ul a tely spaced a proper distance apart for the gage of the railway line.
An 'anqular bearin block 18 is fitted in a similar y angled s 0t 18' transversely of the body 14 traversing the slots 13 and se cured in position by suitable pins 19. A lockin latch 20 is provided for each of the slots 1 being ivoted at its lower end within the chamber- 1 by means of a transverse bar 21 ,"Whi1e the up er inner corner of each latch 20 is in the arm of a book 22 adapted adjacently ptlitsgtlione rail 17 when the latch is inwardly t1 An operating screw 23 freely extends through a Engage 24 the solid end portion 25 of the y 10 such a screw being arranged for each 0 the blocks 18 and suitably threaded within a central opening 26 of blocks. A suitable head 27 is rovided'upon the outer end of each screw within a recess 28 in the end of the body 10, one of the latches 20 being arran ed within the path of movement 0 the a jaoent screw 2 When the device is assembled as illustrated in F' 4 of the drawin a socket wrench or at er implement not s own, may be applied to the head 27 of the screw 23 for movin the screw inwardly of its bearing block 8 thereby en gin the screw against the adjacent latch 0 an forcin the latch into locking position a ainst the ase 16 of the adjacent rail 17. he rails are secured in this manner in their operative positions upon the body 10 and whenever it is desired to release a rail, the screw 23 is retracted which permits the latch 20 to be outwardly moved out of contact with the adjacent rail 17 and ermittin the ready removal of the rail. ll services le tie is provided upon which the rails may be readily locked when desired and then easily released for removal when the occasion requires, such 0 erations being aocom lished without deta'eiin any of the hold ast members which won d be liable to become lost ifit was required to separate the some from the body 10. My form of tie is serviceable for layi'ng'teinpo rary tracks such as in time of war as well as tracks in mines.
What I claim as new is l. A tie and rail Lastcner comprising an elongated body having a chamber therein with slots in the top of the body adjacent its opposite ends, transverse ribs upon the top of the body spaced inwardly of said slots distance less than the width of the base of a railway rail, locking latches pivotedwithin said chamber projecting through the said slots and having inwardly projecting hooked ends arranged Opposite said ribs and an inwardly moving operating means for the said latches.
2. A tie and rail fastener comprising an elongated body having a chamber therein with slots in the top of the body adjacent its opposite ends, transverse ribs upon the top of the body spaced inwardl' of said slots a distance less than the widti of the base of a riiilwa rail, locking latches pivoted with in said 0 iainbe'r projecting through the said slots, an angular bearing block lit-ted in a similarly angled slot transversely of said body traversing each of the said slots and an operating screw threaded through each block having a path of movement in line with the udjaccntly positioned latch.
3. In combination with a metallic bod having a chamber therein and a longitudinal slot communicating with the said chamher and extending through the top of the body, a rail engaging rib carried by the top of the body s accd .nnvardiy of said slot, a swinging latci carried by the body havin its app); (and pi"o{'ecting through the saic slot, :1. ring bloc traversing said slot ontwardl-y '01" the latch, the said body having a. closed end outwardly of said blocl: arranged with a recess in its Outer face and a passage between said recess and chamber and a screw threaded through said block and freely passing through said passage arranged with a head positioned within said recess, the said screw adapted for adjustable engagement with the said latch during the longitudinal movement of the screw when the device is assembled.
4. In combination witlran elongated body, a transrerse rib mounted thereon, a railway roil removnbly positioned transversely of the body engaging the said rib, a locking latch for the rail pivoted to the said body, anangular bearing block fitted in a similurly angled slot transversely of the body adjacent said latch and an adjustin screw for the latch threaded through the said block.
5. A railway tie c'om )risin 'a body having a slot in the top tllel'eu a transverse rib upon the top of the body spaced inwardly f rum said slot, a railway rail mounted upon the'body with its base overlying said slot and in contact with said rib, a latch ivcted within said slot adapted for overlying the base of the rail when the latch is inwardly positioned and an adjusting screw for the ateh arranged with an operating head adjacent the free end of the tie.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GIOVANNI. RACCAGNI.
