CHARLES H. KELLEY, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
GREASE-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
Application filed Kay 6, 1918. Serial No. 232,812.
To all whom it ma 1 concern.
Be it known that I, (.nAnLEsH. KELLEY, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, N. S., in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Greasellups, of which improvement the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grease rups as employed on moving parts of nuichinery sueh as the connecting rods of loeomotives.
Conside ahle expense and inconvenience attends the use of the class of grease (ups 'llt'l'Olll a screw plug stopper is employed for initially compressing the moderately hard grease and etl'erting a closure of the raps, owing to the plugs working loose and beeoniing detached as a result of constant movement when in service. 'Ilhis'l'orm of grease cup is largely employed on eonneefl ing rods of locomotives, and theloss of stopper plugs along the road and neeessarily replaeing thereof entails ronsiderable financial loss annually.
The object of my invention is to provide a grease eup or rereptable having a nondetarhahle slidingly-adjustahle cover with suitable means for looking the rover in its normal or olosed position.
'ith the above ohiert in view. the invention ronsists in eertain features of (-onstruotion, parts and eonihination of parts. as will be hereinafter deseribml and partirularl v pointed out intlie appended i-laims.
'llnendioilinlents shown in the armor panying drawings l'ulli' exemplify the in vention but is n t to be ronsidered as" a limitation. in said drawings:-
Figure l is a plan ol' said einlualiinent.
Fig. '2 is a side elevation of the same. on the line .r- :1' of Fig. l. and
Fig. .l is a side elevation ol' a portion of a eonnortiug rod having the grease rap on tegral therewith. I
llel'erring to Figs. l and 2. lllt' fl'l'ti lht t'tll) or rereptarle ron|priso a reetangular bod) l provided with a ilepenilent externallytlneadod annular postion Ll adapted to eon- In-rt the saunto any -nitahle hearing. as It. This body is pro\ iiled with an annular opening or well For the reri-ption and i-on|ini-- ment of lhe grease l. the upper portion of threaded at T, the purpose ol' whieh will he hereinafter set forth. The upper portion of -'lhis rover has an the body is provided with side flanges 8 and H which are integral with a rear flange 9, there being a groove 10 extending about said flanges for the reception and oieration of the slidahle ('()\'(I' 11, said side anges having seemed to the lugs 12 thereof the trans verse rod 13 \\lll(ll extends over the cover. enlarged head 11' at. its forward end. by whirh it is driven in place, and a pair of projerting stops l t on its rear portion to engage the rod l-l.\\'l\en in open position to prei ent berolning detarhed whn inserting grease. The rover is tapered 0n the under rear 'Xtl'('|iilt and is provided longitudinally with an elongated slot 15, the forward end of said slot terminating in the annular roves It; formed "at the underside of the slide. This slot has extending therethrough tl1e.small end 17 ot' the looking pm 17. said loel-zing pin engaging normally in the reress lti ot' the slide and retained in this lot-king position by engagement therewith of a spiral spring 1H disposed within the opening ll of the rap body wherein said pin is loosely titted. Loosely arranged within the rap body. ilirortlv below the Slide, is the annular rap 2H. for eonipressing the grmse. whirh is in this instanve. ot' roneavoronvrx form in rross-sei'tion with a downwardly dependent flange 2", and the horizonlall illhlithttl llange portion 21 lrv which it is upported on [he shouldered portion of the r ovi- .3. This hanged portion '21 is rounded oil on its upper side. the body of the rap liming a bridge or web :12 extending tlwrearrmss and adapted for removal of the rap when neri-ssarv in renewing the grease.
in prartii-e. the lorhing pin is depressed ntlirient to release the slide, whieh is then drawn out as tar a it will go. or until the stop ll engage the rod 13. after whirh the map in is removed. 'l'ln' grease is then inserted. lilling the well almost to the groove. T the rap then inserted on top of the grease and roinpres eil into the grease as far as pos- Flllll. al'tr-r who-h the \lltlO l driven into (lost-d position. In driiing the slide in ward the tapered end thereof engages the tapered edge of the llanged portion of the rup and. as the lide advanres. it eolnpresses the rap until seated. This ronipression l'orri-s the grease to the hearing as is the case where a sort-w rap is (Ill)llrtltl.
is opened the compression cap removed and the threaded connection of the force pumps screwed into the threaded portion 7.
Referring to Fig. 3, the rod 30 has the prease cup portion 31 with slide 32 of sim1- ar construction to that of. Figs. 1 and 2, formed integral with said rod, which will be found preferable in some instances.
As heretofore stated, I do not confine myself to the articular embodiment shown and describe but reserve the right to such structural changes onmodifications as will be within the scoizie of the following claims.
'at I claiin is-- 1. n a grease cup, a rease receptacle, a slidably attached coyer herefor, means to lock said cover inlnormally closed position on said rece tacle,'and a grease compression cap dispose therein beneath and compressible into its normal position by said cover.
' 2. In a grease cup, a grease receptacle, a slidable but permanently attached cover therefor, means to lock said cover in normally closed position on said receptacle, and
a grease com ression cap disposed within said receptac e beneath and compressible into its normal position b said cover, said receptacle having a shoul cred recess upon which said cap normally en ages.
.its normal position by the closure of said cover. In testimony whereof, -I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two sub- 40 scribing witnesses.
