f .1918'. serial No.' 236,116. v
To all whom it may concern Be it known'that we, JOHN EDWARD OG- i- DEN, a citizen of thellnited States of America, and a'resident of Mountainville, Itown of Cornwall, Orange county, and State of' New York, and CHARLES C. ToMK1NsoNa citizen of the United States of America, and a resident oflPlainield, Union county, and State fof, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements4 in -Strut- Doors, of which the followingis a specificapanyin-g drawings, forming a -part thereof.
This invention vrelates to new 'and useful improvements' in 'doors and `especially'v to large heavy doors such as'are used on pier shedsnwarehouse's and the. like, and is related' more specifically to two-section doors.
, One object is lto -provide struts for-.sup-
porting the door in certain of itsopen 'posi-' tions and automatically actuated mechanism forniovin the struts into the desired supporting re ation with the other parts of the ap aratus; u v
l nother object .is to provide a simple but strongoperating. mechanism forr such doors whichis so arranged that the door is amply supported in allof its positions.
In order that our invention maybe thoroughlv understood we will now proceed to describe the same in thefollowing specifica` tion7 'and will then point, out the novel fea'- tures thereofin appended claims.
Referring to the. drawings: l VFigure 1 is a sectional siderelevationof a door made according'to and embodying this invention, with the parts shown in the positions. they vassume when the door "is i closed. r l
Fig. 2 is a similar view of' the -same parts with thedoor fully open.
Like characters of reference designate cor-v 'responding parts in all the figures.
10 designates the side posts-and 11 the linte1 of adoor opening. lThis is closed byl a'door' which comprises an` upper section 12, and a lower sectiony v13. At the sides of the upper section are guides 14 up' into which the lower 'section' slides. Guide rollers 15 are provided at the lower'corners of the lower door section, which vr'un upon the doorV posts 10. -Hoisting chains 40 are also connect'ed with these lower corners of the lower door section as for example tothe pivots I y lthe action of the spring 54.
' of the guide rollers 15; These chains ru'u- Pivoted to brackets 20 which are ailixed to the sides of' the upper door' section, are
'struts 21. `Pivots 22 at the lowei' end of the vstrutssupport rollers 23 which run between l vertical guides25. Ropes 44 connected with theselower ends of the struts run up to and over sheaves 4 5-46 and down to a counterweight 47.
O n the shaft 18 is a gear 50and-a rotative. yarm l51. A gear 52 mounted on this arm'is -in mesh with gear 50and- 53 1s a gearconnected with sheave 45, 54 isa pivoted lever connected with the' arin 51 by al rod 55. This 'is provided withv a forked portion 56 andv aspring 57'isV connected therewith andto 'a fixed vpoint 58, as shown, and 59 is a bracket projecting above the lower door section for actuating the lever 55. bracket 60 is shown in Fig. 2 for supporting the parts ofthe door sections in their open position, in which they overhang their pivotal connections with thestruts.-
door section will be raised in the guides 14 to a' position back ofthe upper door section A shelf .Specification of Letters Patent. Iatehted All-g'. 6,1918.
12.. When the lower door section reaches the upperend of its vertical movement, the
i bracket 59 will engage the forked portion 56 of lever 54 and raiseit and the arm 51. The spring 57 will complete this movement -until gear 52 is brought in mesh with gear 53. .The rotation ofV shaft 18 through the 'gears described willnow be imparted to movement and support the struts while the l door is o en.
. vIn closmg, the gears remainy in mesh and the struts are'lowered until the bracket 59 engages thev forked part 56 of lever 57 and pulls it down, which movement is completed This application is a division` of an application `filedbvus October 30, 1917, Aand given Serial No.' 199,276.
What we claim is: v y
1. A door comprising an upper section and a iower section, guide connections between the sections to provide for the lower section being raised up beside the upper section, downwardlyv eiiteiidiiig struts having their upper ends pivotally connected' with the sides of the upper section above its lower edge, hoisting means, connections therefronito the lower corners of the lower door section, whereby the lower section may be first raised vertically beside the upper section and t-liereaftei"tlie lower edges of both sections may be raised together vertically, permitting the other portions of thel section being raised up beside the upper section, downwardly extending struts having their upper ends pivotally connected with the sidesof the upper section above its lower edge, hoisting means, connections therefrom to the lower cornersof the lowerA door sections, whereby the lower section may be first raised vertically beside the vupper section Y andthereafterthe lower edges of both sections may be' raised together vertically, permittingv the'other portions of the sections to swing out of the lvertical plane, hoisting means for the lower ends of the struts, and means actuated by the vertical movement'of the lower section` for connecting the strut hoisting means with the door hoisting means, in opening, and actuated by the movement of the sections to the vertical plane in closing, toolisconnect' the strut hoisting means from the door hoisting means.
3. A door comprising an upper section and a lower section, guide connections between the sections to providevfor the lower section being raised up beside the upper section, domnwardly extending struts having their upper ends pivotally 'connected with the sides of the upper section above its lower edge, ahoisting shaft, connections theretion andtheieafter the lower edges of` both sections may be raised together vertically, permitting the other portions of the sections to swing out of the vertical plane, hoisting means for the struts comprising sheaves, and iiexible elements connected with the lower ends of the stiiits and runningover said sheaves, reduction gearing between said slieaves and the hoisting shaft, and means actuated by the movements of the door sections for connecting and disconnecting said gearing.
4. A door comprising anupper section andv a lowerl section, guide connections between the sections to provide for the lower section being raisedy up' beside the. upper section, downwardly extending struts having their upper ends pivot-ally connected with the sides of the upper section above its lower edge, a hoisting shaft, connections therefrom to the lower ,corners of the lower door section, whereby the lower section may be first raised `vertically beside the upper section and thereafter the lower edges of both sections may be raised together vertically, permitting the other portions of the sections to swing out ofthe vertical plane, hoisting means for the struts comprising sheaves, and iiexible elements connected with the lower ends of the struts and running over said sheaves, agear on the hoisting shaft, a gearl connected with said sheaves, van intermediate gear, a movable support therefor, and .means on the lower door for causing the movement of said lower door section to move said gear support to `bring the intermediate gear into or out of mesh with said. othergears.
nvwitness whereof we have hereunto set our handsthis 2lstdayof lMay, 19l8.`
