Be it known that we, J ()IIN LAMenn'r, J12, a citizen of the United-States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of l/Vestchester and State of New York, and I-IARRYB. LAM- BERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at North 'Pelham, in the county of NVest chester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inValves, ofwhich the following is ,a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates broadly to valves, but especially to those designed for use as inlet and exhaust-valves for fluid pressure engines, motors, or pumps of any form or character, whether using liquids or gases under pressure; but is more especially designed and adapted for use in steam and explosive vapor motors, which valve of our invention is of an extremely simple and cheap form of construction, of little liability to get outv of order, of extreme durability and long life, and practically noiseless in its operation.
Our said invent-ion is fully shown and described in the following specification, of whichthe accompanying drawing forms a part, wherein similar letters and numerals of reference designate like or equivalent parts wherever found 1 throughout the several views, and in which:

As shown in Fig. 1, our improved valve, takes the place of the ordinary common poppet inlet and exhaust valve of the motor, and .is inserted in place in substantiallythe same manner. The reference letter-E indicates-the inlet-valve, and E the exhaustvalve, each of such valves being provided with an actuating shaft, rod or stem 11. and 11 respectively, each of which is reciprocated during the operation of the motor in the Well-l nownmanner common to poppet and other reciprocating.valves, but inasmuch as such reciprocating mechanism is wellknown in the art and forms no part of this invention, we have not deemed it essential to show ordescribe the same herein.
As shown in detail inFig. 2, our improved valve comprises an inside stationary cylindrical wall member or valve-casing piece 2, formed integral with an annular end wall 2', formed intcgral.\vith a sleeve2, which member 2 is provided with an exterior annular male screw-thread 15, at the bottom by which thesame is screwed firmly into position, at the base into a like shaped outer cylindrical casing 1, ofthe same shape and contour as the casing 2, provided at its base adjacentto the screw thread 15 with a like outer annular male-screw thread 16 by which the same is secured in position in the female screw-threaded port G or G, of the motor cylinder according as the same is. to be an inlet or an exhaust valve.
The inner cylindrical member 2 is of shorter length than the outer cylindrical member or shell 1, and a considerable space (according to the size of the valve used, from a half an inch upward), is left between the annular upper end wall 2 of 2, and the upper endwall 1 of 1, and contained and secured in place between the two annular members or shells 1 and 2, is the moving valve-member or shell 3, having the cylindrical portion 3 fitting in the annular-space 17 between the annular-walls of 1 and 2,
and having the end portion or wall 18, from the center of which extends the actuating lift-rod shaft or stem 11 or 11, actuated by suitable cam-mechanism of any suitable well-known form (not shown), which stem 11 or 11' is usually and preferably formed integral with the end wall 18 of the valve member 3.

In assembling and placing in position, the valve-stem (11 or 11'), is passed down through the sleeve 2 after the placing in position of the piston-rings 7, 8,9, andlO, and the outer-sleeve 1 is then screwed into and the valve havingbeen thus as- 20, (as the icase may be), having been removed, the valves are inserted through the orifices closed by such plugs, and screwed fully home in the female-thread by means of the exterior male screw-threads 16, in themotor enginecasing orifices; the sleeves 2 and stem 11 or 11 passing down through. either theinlet 21 or the outlet 21, as the case may be; the entire valve mechanisms being firmly secured, in place against accidentaldisplacement by a locknut 22 or 22 screwed upon the lower. end of the sleeve 2.
The valve mechanisms being now in position, it will be seen that by reciprocation of the stem 11 or 11, as the case may be, by the usual valve stem-reciprocating mechanism (not shown), that the ports 4:, 5, and
.6, will be brought into and out of registry,
so as to form communication or nonco1nmunication between the explosive chamber C of the motor, and the inlet E or the outlet or exhaust E, thereof.
While we prefer to make our improved valve of cylindrical form, we do not limit ourselves to such construction and formation, andmany changes in the construction and combination of the several parts, may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention.
In like manner the positions of such'valves in the engine, pump, or other apparatus in which the same may be used, may also be widely varied, and when used in double actuating engines or "pu1nps,"it is frequently preferable to have such valves actuated at a right angle to the axial line of reciprocation of the piston, instead of parallel therewith as shown in Fig. 1, as applied to an explosive vapor motor engine.
I We claim:
1. In a valve, an outer casing closed at one end and open at the other, having a ported-wall; an inner casing having an endwall secured in the outer casing in such manner as to leave a space between such inner and outer casing between v the end walls of the two casings and having a ported,
side-wall spaced from the ported wall of the outer casing, the port or ports of which register with a port or ports in the wall of the outer casing; and a ported valve-mom ber adapted to open and. close the port passages of the inner andoutercasings upon being moved, movably mounted in the space between the inner and outer casings.
2. Ina valve, an outer casing closed at one end and open at the other, having a portedwall; an inner, casing having an end-wall secured in the outer casing in such manner as to leave a space between such inner and outer casing between the end walls of the two casings and having aported side-wall spaced from the ported wall of the outer casing, the port or ports of which register with'a port or ports in the wall of, the outer casing; and a ported valve-member adapted to open and close theport passagesof the inner and, outercasings upon being moved,

6. In a vv-alve, a casing comprising an inner casing-member having a centrally perforated wall carrying an annular ported Wall extending at a right-angle thereto, a sleeve extending outward from the perforation of said inner Wall; a like-shaped outer casingmember secured at its open end to the peripheral outer end of the inner casing membar, the end wall of the outer casing mem her being imperforate and the annular wall thereof having a port or ports registering with. the port or ports in the annular wall of the inner casing member; a like-shaped moving valve member, provided in the annular wall with a port or ports adapted to be brought into and out of registry with the port or ports of the inner and outer casing walls; and a central valve-stem connected with the valve-men'iber for reciprocatingly actuating the same passing out through said sleeve, the outer casing being provided with an outer annular male screw-thread for securing the same in position.
7. 9. In a valve, an outer casing closed at one end by an end Wall and open at the other end, an inner casing having an end Wall se cured in the outer casing and spaced from the end wall of said outer casing, a valve member'having a disk portion reciprocably mounted between said end walls, the disk portion and casings forming closed air chambers on either side of said disk portion so that the air in said air chambers will form air cushions to resiliently resist the action of said disk portion and the thereto-connected valve member, there being a perforation through one of said end walls, and a stem connected to said disk portion extending through said perforation outwardly from said air chambers to be there connected for actuation, there being registering ports in said casings and valve member, and means for actuating said disk portion to bring the ports of said valve member and casings either into or out of registration.
10. In a-valve; an outer casingclosed at one end by anend Wall and open at the other end, an inner. casing having an end wall secured in the outer casing andspaced from the end wall of. said outer casing, a valve member having a disk portion reciprocably mounted between said end walls, the disk portion and casings forming closed air chambers on'either side of said disk portion so that the air in said air chambers will form' air cushions to resiliently resist the action of said disk portion and the theretoconnected valve member, there beingports in registration withone another in said casings, there being ports in said valvemember, and means operatively connected to said disk portion for actuating said disk portion to bring the ports of said valve member either into or out of registration with the portsof said casings.
