To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, l/VILLIAM \V. S'rnn- LING, a native born citizen of the United States, residing at Ruth, in the county of lVhite Pine and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plug-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valves and has especial relation to air valves used for controlling the supply of air upon either side of a piston and is intended for use in connection with air brake and other systems, although it is equally well adapted for use in water systems.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a valve which is simple of construction, positive in operation and which will prevent creeping of the piston or loss of air.
With the above objects in view the invention includes a casing for a plurality of diametrically disposed ports, which communicate with a central bore, in which there is mounted for rotation a hollow plug, which isin turn provided with a diametrically arranged port and at each end of this port is provided with circumferentially arranged passages which communicate with and are 30.
disposed upon each side of the said port, these passages being adapted to establish communication between the ports of the casing and a second hollow plug disposed within the first mentioned plug is also pro vided with a transversely arranged port so as to establish communication through the diametrically arranged port of the first mentioned hollow plug, the second mentioned plug being held against movement with respect to the casing and having therein a rotatably mounted plug whichis provided with a transverse port adapted to register with the ports of the first and second mentioned hollow plugs.

In the drawings, the valve casing which is shown at 10 is preferably cylindi'ical in form and is provided with diametrically disposed right angularly arranged ports, which are indicated by the reference charactors 11, 12, 13 and 14-, the ports 11 and 13 being intake and exhaust:- ports. The casing 10 is provided with a concentric bore 15 and within this bore there is mounted for rotation a hollow plug 16. The plug 16 is formed with a. threaded extension 17 and a squared portion 18, the latter being adapted to receive the washer 19 and the former a nut 20, the latter acting to hold the plug in position within the casing 10. The plug 16 is formed with a central bore 21 and with a diametrically disposed port 22, which communicates with the said bore. Also formed in the periphery of the plug are radially arranged passages 23 and 24, the former being disposed upon opposite sides of one end of the port 22, while the latter is disposed upon opposite sides of the opposite end of the said port. The port 22 is adapted to establish communication between either of the sets of ports 11 13 or 12, 14, while the passages 23 and 24. es tablish communication between any two of the adjacent ports, for example the ports 12 and 13 and the ports 11 and 14.
Seated within the bore of the plug 16 is a second hollow intermediate plug 25, the bore 26 of which communicates with a diametrically disposed port or passage 27. The plug 9 25 is provided with a threaded extension 28 and a squared portion 29, the former re ceiving a nut 30 which clamps a washer 31 against the bottom of the threaded extension 17 of the plug 16. The opposite end of the plug 25 is provided with a squared portion 32. which enters a similarly shaped socket 33 provided with a yoke 34, the terminals of the latter being secured to the casing 10 upon diametrically opposite sides thereof through the medium of screws 34. The plug 25 is fixed with respect to the 021s ing 10, so that the position of the port 22 in the plug 16 may be changed with respect to the ports in the casing 10, Without changing therelativeiposition of the port 27, the plug and the said casing. Mounted within the bore 26 of the plug 25, isaninner plug 35, which is provided with a port'36 which may 'be brought into register withthe port 27 of the plug 25 to establish coinmunicationvbetweenithe ports 12 and Minot the casing through the medium of the port 22 in the plug 16 as shownin FigLrS, or may be turned at right angles to the port 27 so as to interrupt flow through the said-port 27. The plug is manually operated-by a handle 37 positionedabove thetop of the plug 25. An operating handle 38 is'also provided for the plug :16, this-handle being in the form of a wrench engaging *tl1G l16X agonal extension '39 provided upon said plug.
'WVhen the-parts are-arranged in theposition shown in Fig. '3, air will be equally distributed in the cylinder 40 upon either side o'fthe piston 41, through the medium of pipes 42 and 43 communicating respectively with the cylinders and the ports 12' and 14. When the parts are in the position shown inFig. air will enter'the port 13 of the casing 10 and will-travel+through the passage 23, the port 12 and the'pipe 42 into the cylinder ALO upon one side of the piston il the air exhaustingupon the opposite" side of the piston through 'thepipe 43, the port l l the passage 24 and the exhaustport 11. Fig. 5 illustrates the parts in position to supply air throughthe pipe l3-to the side of the cylinder opposite that supplied in Fig. 4 andto exhaust-the airf-rom the other sideofthe-piston. Asthe plug;25 remains fixed with respect-to the casing 10, 2 rotary .movementoft-he plug 16 willjcause-the plug 25 to interrupt theport or passage 22 as shown inFigs. ,4 and5 and to furtherprovide against seepage or loss ;th-rough the port 27 the plug 35 maybe-rotated tointerrupt the :port or "passage 27. ,By this meansloss' of airthroughlthe valve is-absolutely prevented and creeping of the piston eliminated.
