Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1918.
Application filed November 21, 1917. Serial No, 203,194.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WEDGE- won'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sarepta, in the Parish of lVebster and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie- Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel form of tie plate designed to be associated with a rail tie formed or" wood so as to increase the life of the tie, the said plate being equipped with novel and eflicient fastening means for securing a rail to the plate.
Other objectslwill appear and be betterunderstood from that embodiment of my in vention of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accomianying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:

Referring to the drawing in detail, the letter A designates a rail tie and Bone of the rails. Interposed between the upper side of the tie A and resting thereon, and the under side of the base flange of the rail B, is the tie plate 1, which is of, rectangular shape and extends longitudinally of the tie A and is provided, adjacent the outer end thereof, with a pair of rail base flange-engaging elements 2, which are arranged in spacedrelation and formed integral with the plate 1 and engage over the outer longitudinal 'edge of the base flange of the rail B, as shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The outer end of the plate 1 is provided with an opening 3,
which extends through the plate and re-- coives the shank of a spike 4, the said shank of the spike 4 being engaged in the tie A and the flanged head of the spike engages over the outer longitudinal side of the base flange of the rail B, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner end of the plate 1 is prm'ided, adjacent the terminal thereof, with a transversely extending slot 5 that opens into the opposite side edges of the plate and into the upper side of the plate, and the said slot has the side walls thereof undercut, as shown at 6 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The outer wall of the slot also extends diagonally of the plate 1 throughout the length of the slot. The slot 5 receives an elongated plate 7, which has the oppositelongitu'dinal edges thereof beveled, as at 8, for engaging under the undercut walls (3 of the slot 5, and the said plate has the outer longitudinal edge thereof cut on a diagonal line so as to agree with the outer diagonally extending .wall of the slot 5. The plate 7 is provided at a point intermediate its ends with. a nail-fastening element J, which engages over the inner longitudinal side of the base flange ofthe rail B, as shown in Fig. 2 of'the drawing. The plate 7 is also provided on opposite sides of the fastening element 9, and spaced therefrom, with a pair of openings 10, which register when the plate 7 is in operative position, with openings 1-1 in the lower wall of the slot 5, for the reception of the shanks of a pair of spikes 12, the said shanks of the spikes engaging in the tie body, and the heads of the spikes engaging over the inner longitudinal side of the base flange of the rail B, as shown in Fig. 1. The spikes 12 serve the double function of assisting in holding the rail B against vertical movement and also holding the plate 7 against accidental movement toward the larger end of the slot 5.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
A rail tie plate consisting of a rectangular body having one end thereof provided with a pair of spaced rail base fla.nge'engaging elements and having a spike-receiving opening located between the rail base flange-engaging elements, the said plate having the other end thereof provided with a groove having one side wall thereof extending diagonally, the lower Wall of the ings tl'leyein, an elongated groove having spaced spike-receiving spenfittecl within the groove in the last-mew tioned end of the body and hzwing one side Wall thel'eef ext-ending diagonally and 0pposing the diagonally extending wall of the groove in the body,- the said plate having a pair of spike-receiving openings therein reg istering with the spike-recaiving openings 10 in the lower wall of the groove, and a rail plate reinovably base flange-engaging elmeni carried by the plate and located between the spike-receiving openings in the plate.
