attachment to the bayonet of a re arm,
whereby the soldier may readily cut a wire entanglement for clearing the same awayl from the line of march.
A further object of the device is to pro-` vide wire cuttitng scissors with a detachable clamping means whereby the scissors are operatively positioned upon a sharpened bayonet or blade ready for use in cutting wires and operable by the soldier from a point adjacent the lire arm upon which the blade is mounted.
A still further object of the device is the provision of a resilient retaining means for a blade whereby a desirable member may be securely locked thereto and removed therefrom at will while the elements are insepa-v rable when the device is in closed engagement.

It being understood that the device is adaptable for war purposes in cutting wire, the same broadly consists of a pair of wire cutting scissors or shears 10 adapted for detachable locking engagement with a double edged bayonet 11 of a riiie, not shown. The shears 10 consist of handles 12 and 13 shiftably connected together by a pivotc14 and formed with cutting jaws 15v and 16 respectively. The jaw 16 has a con-y Vex cutting edge 17 terminating in a socket 18 adjacent the pivot 14 while the coperating edge-19 of tliejaw 15 is of general con* cave form having a socket 20 adjacent vthe 22 secured adj acent' the free end of the said handle and extending to a point in the hand of the operator or soldier carrying. the lire arm which is provided with the bayonet 11. By pulling the cord 22, the jaws l5 and 16 are moved toward each other uponthe wire 2l for severing the wire.1
The handle 12 of the shears 10 is provided with a loopv23for receiving the pointed freeend portion 24 of the bayonet 11 while a resilient locking clamp 25 secured adjacent the free end of the handle 12 is adapted to retainingly inclose the blade 11, thereby mounting the shears 10 thereon as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The clamp 25 is preferably formed of resilient'sheet metal having a substantially V-shaped 'base member 26 with a central flat portion 2TV secured by rivets 28 tol the handle 12. A resilient cover plate 28 is' hinged as at 29 to the free edge ofv one side 30 of the base 26, the said platehaving a wide receiving hook 31 formed therein intermediate its ends by bending the saidy plate and adapted to springover an outturned flange 32 at the free edge ofthe opposite lip 33 of the base side 34. y
The plate 28 isreadily swung toits open position Yupon the hinge 29 for receiving the bayonet 11 within the clamp 25 resting upon the base 26 inwardly of the lip 33 thereof. The sides 30 and' 34 are sprung toward the handle 12 thereby depressing the outwardlv struckV lugs 35 thereof into engagement wit the handle 12. The lip 33 is then depressed toward the bayonet 11 and the cover plate 28 folded overthe bayonet and the hook 31 sprung over the flange 32, thereby inclosing the bayonet within the clamp 25 with one of its edges 36 within the' V-shaped side 37 formed between the lip 33 and base side 34,
while the opposite edge 36 of the bayonet l When the clamp 25 is closed in this manner, the bayonet 1l is securely held thereby for operatively maintaining the shears l() upon the bayonet while a link 38 swingingly carried by the resilient end portion 39 of the cover plate 28 is engaged over a keeper 40 carried by the handle 12. The plate portion 39 is slightly bent when the link 38 is forced over the keeper 40, so that the sides 30, 34 of the clamp 25 as well as the lip 33 and the cover plate 2S are resiliently cngaged with the bayonet ll when the clamp is closed, it being seen that the inner dimensions of the clamp are thereby reduced as shown by Figs. 3 and -l of the drawing.
The shears l0 may be readily detached from the bayonet ll by releasing the link 38 and opening the clamp 25, permitting the bayonet to be withdrawn from the clamp and also from the loop 23. The device is of light weight and may be easily carried by asoldier and quickly locked upon the bayonet of his rifle for cutting wires such as barbed entanglements whenever the occasion may arrive.
IVhat I claim as new is l. In combination with a wire cutting shears having a handle adapted for attachment to a bayonet, a clamp formed of resilient sheet metal comprising a substantially V-shaped base secured to the handle and arranged with struck-out lugs adjacent the handle, an inturned lip upon one side of the base forming a V-shaped receiving' space for one side of the bayonet, an outwardly projecting flange at the free end of the lip, a cover plate of resilient metal hinged to the other side of the base having a bent hooked portion intermediate its ends adapted for springing over the said ilange in retaining engagement therewith when thev base lip and plate are resiliently engaged with the bayonet when the clamp is closed thereon, the said plate having a resilient end portion outwardly of said hook, a swinging link carried by the free end of the cover plate and a keeper upon the handle adapted for receiving the said link when the clamp is closed.
2. A wire cutting attachment comprising in combination with a bayonet, a wire cutting shears having a mounting handle and an operating handle, a pull cord attached to the operating handle, a loop upon the attaching handle adapted for the reception of the pointed end portion of the bayonet, a resilient bayonet receiving clamp upon the attaching handle, resilient closing means for the clamp and retaining means for the latter when closed, whereby the clamp is retained upon the bayonet with the sides of the clamp in tensioned engagement therewith.
3. A retaining clamp comprising a V- shaped base having opposite resilient sides, an inturned lip on one of said sides forming a V-shaped receiving portion, an outwardly projecting flange upon said lip, a retaining plate hinged to the opposite side of the base having an intermediate bent portion in the form of a hook adapted for engagement over the said flange when the clamp is closed, and an anchoring link swingingly carried by the free end of the said plate.
4. A mounting clamp for scissors formed of resilient sheet metal comprising a V- shaped base adapted for attachment to the handle of the scissors and provided with struck-out lugs adapted for seating upon the handle when the base is extended with the clamp in its closed position, an inturned lip carried by one side of the base terminating in a flange, a cover plate hinged to the opposite side of the flange having a hook portion adapted for engagement over the said flange when the clamp is closed, resiliently contacting an article arranged therein,
and locking means for the free end of said plate.
