Be it known that l. JOHN F. OConnon, a citizen of the United States, residingr at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Sta-te of illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Antifricticn-Rollersv and Processes of Making'Samc, of which the following' is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in anti-frictionurollers and process of making same.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel form of anti-friction roller and more particularly adapted for railway car side bearings` and process of nia-king the saine and wherein is employed an inner bushing el' one form ot cast material yand an outer section of cast material of a dilerent kind from the bushing, the construction 'of the parts and the yprocess being such that the outer material is chilled from within during the casting process and Without the necessity of external chills.

Referring first to the construction illustratedin Figs. l, 2, and 3, l0 denotes a. base casting of a roller side bearing for railway cars, which is adapted to be riveted to the truck bolster l1 thereof. An additional advantage resultingr from the use olf a malleable iron bushing rf sides in the fact that no slag will be .termed at (lie junction between the bushingr and the outer metal. since' all lwand and scale will have been removed troni tlic bushing during the annealing process.
In the construction illastraterfi in Figs. and 5, 120 represents the inner malleable iron bushing having a series of longitudinally and radially extending ribs or anges 121 which, when the outer section 122 of White iron is cast therearonnd, will be enibedded in the White iron and thus effectively chill the latter during the castingprocess.
In the construction illuf-stratcd in Figs. G and 7, 220 represent-s the malleable iron hol- 10W bushing which, before the outer section 222 of White iron is cast thcrearound, has slipped thereover a coil ot steel or iron Wire 221 which acts as the chilling nieans for the outer White iron 222.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, 320 represents a cent-ral holloiv bushing of malleable iron, 322 the outer section of White iron cast therearound, and 321 a series of rods or bars disposed circumferentially around the bushing and parallel to the axis thereof for chilling; the White iron 322.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that the anti-riction roller which I have produced may be cheaply manufactured by a very simple process and at the Same time obtaining a bushing* which is substantially self-lubricating and an outer hearing surface of hardened material Without the use of chill molds. l
Although I have herein shown and def scribed different embodiments of the invention, the same are merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come Within the scope of the clainis appended hereto.

As an article of manufacture, an antiyfriction roller adapted for use in side bearneraeoe infr an anti-friction roller ada )ted or'use in side bearings and the like which consists, 1n providingn a hollo'vv4 bushingF ot malleable iron, providing means disposed around said bushing adapted to actas chills, and casting: the outer portion ot the roller of white iron around said bushing and Vwith said means embedded therein.
