To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA E. DEWEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionhas relation to lifting jacks or elevating devices for vehicles, more particularly automobiles. The object of the invention is to provide a jack or elevating device for vehicles which is normally permanently attached to the vehicle and in its inoperative position is drawnup or collapsed close under the vehicle and when in its open or expanded position is capable of raising the entire vehicle bodily from the roadway or other surface on which the wheels of the vehicle usually rest. More particularly the invention embodies two pairs of bars each pair being arranged near one of the two axles of the vehicle and one of the bars of each pair adapted to be raised and lowered simultaneously with thejcomplemental bars of the other pair for lifting or loweringthe vehicle thereby equipped. Furthermore, it is contemplated that suitable mechanism will be provided for actuating said movable bars so that they will operate in unison and when they 'are shifted to their lowered or operative position the vehicle to which they and with a permanent fixed complemental trough-shaped member attached to the ve-. hicle and arranged to cooperate with said movable member and inclose or box in the operating mechanism when the movable member is in its inoperative or raised position. 4 V

contemplated that there will be provided -an elevating device or jack near the front axle of the vehicle and a similar one near the rear axle and as these devices are in all respects identical, with slight exceptions which will be described, it is thought that a general description of one will be sufficient for the understanding of them both. Secured to the frame bars 1 and 2 is an inverted trough-shaped member designated generally by the reference numeral 8 and comprising an upper wall 9 and lateral walls 10 and 11. Extending upwardly from the ends of the upper wall 9 are flanges 12 which are secured to the outside of the frame bars 1 and 2 by holding means such as bolts 13. Ex-

tion of the upper wall 9 is a lug 14 provided with a semicircular groove in its lower face which is adapted to cooperate with a cap 15 for forming a bearing. At the two ends of the member 8 are downwardly-extending lugs 16 fashioned similarly to the lug 14 and furnishing in connection with caps 17 bearings, the axes of which are in alinement with the axis of the central bearin 14. Mounted in the bearings just describec is a shaft 18, shown best in Fig. 2, and comprising a median portion 19 arranged to be received in the bearing in the lug 14, and opposite portions outside of the median portion having reversely-disposed screw threads 20. One end 21 of the shaft 18 is squared to receive an ordinary socket wrench 22 and is positioned in alinement with the opening 5 to permit the insertion of the wrench through the opening to engage the squared end 21 of the shaft 18. The side walls 10 and 11 of the inverted trough member 8 are provided with parallel longitudinally-extending slots 23 for a purpose to be described.
Adapted to cooperate with the member 8 is a movable member denominated generally by the reference numeral 24 and comprising a lower wall 25' and lateral walls 26 and27. The general contour of the movable member 24 substantially conforms to 'the outlines both in shape and dimensions with the member 8 and it is contemplated that when the movable member 24 is in its upper vposit-ion the upper edges of the side walls 26 and 27 will approximately snugly contact with the lower edges of the side walls 10 and 11 of the upper member to thereby form a substantially closed box for containing the mechanism for raising and lowering the member 24. The lower wall 25 of the movable member 24 is provided near the ends thereof with transversely-extending lugs 0r abutments 28 for a purpose to be later described. v
Adapted to travel longitudinally of the member 8 on the threaded portions 20 of the shaft-18 are two nuts 29 and as they are similar a description of one and its connected mechanism is thought to be sufficient. Each nut is approximately T-shaped and with the head portion 30 thereof of sufiicient Width to engage and be guided in its movement along the threaded shaft by the side walls 10 and 11 of the member 8'arranged to travel in the slots 23. Arranged to be mounted on' the trunnions 31 is a link comprising a pair of side arms 32 the ends of which are suitably apertured to receive the trunnions 31 and with the opposite end thereof rounded at 33 and provided with lateral projecting bosses or studs 34. The rounded end 33 of the link is provided with laterally-projeting pins or nogs 35 which are pivotally mounted in suitable apertures in the sidewalls 26 and 27 of the lower movable member 24, so that the lower member 24 is thereby pivotally connected with said link and the opposite ends of each link pivotally connected with one of the nuts 29. On the ends of the shaft 18 outside of the bearings in the lugs 16 are sprocket wheels 40 and positioned at suitable points on the frame are idler sprocket wheels 41. Extending around the sprocket wheels 40 and held in proper position by the idler sprocket wheels 41 1s a sprocket chain 42. The sprocket wheels 40 are fixedly -mounted on theshafts 18 and hence when a suitable crank or wrench 22 is applied to the squared end 21 of one of the shafts 18 and rotated the nuts 29 are shifted longitudinally of both shafts 18 due to the engagement of their threaded portions with the threaded portions of said shaft. The Increment of these nuts causes the links 32 to rock to lower the member 24 downv wardly into the position shown in Fig. 3 and said shaft provided with two screw threaded portions, the inclinations of the threads of one portion reversely disposed with respect to the threads of the other portion, a nut mounted on each threaded portion, av link pivotally attached to each nut, a movable trough-shaped member pivotally attached to the opposite ends of said links and arranged when said nuts are shifted away from the central portion of said shaft to move said movable member downwardly and when moved in a reverse direction to raise said movable member into cooperation with said first member to form a box-like structure.

the side walls of said member provided with longitudinally-extendingslots, a rotatable shaft mounted in said member, said shaft provided with two threaded portions with the threads of two portions reversely disposed, a nut mounted in each portion, a link attached to each nut, pins projecting laterally from each nut, the pins on each nut arranged to travel in one pair of slots in said member, a movable trough-shaped member pivotally attached'to the opposite ends of said links and arranged 'to be vertically shifted when the position of said nuts is shifted, said movable member arranged when moved to its upper position to cooperate with said first member to form a boxlike structure.
5. A device of the character described comprising a fixed trough-shaped member provided with means fol-attaching it to avehicle, a movable shaft mounted therein, said shaft provided with two screw threaded portions, the inclinations of the threads of the two being reversely disposed, a nut mounted on each threaded portion, a link pivotally attached to each nut, a lug positioned near the end-of each link, a movable trough-shaped member pivotally attached to the opposite ends of said links, an abutment mounted near each end of said movable member and arranged to be engaged by the lugs on said links, said trough-shaped member adapted to be vertically shifted. by the movement of said nuts on said shaft and when moved to its upper or inoperative po sition to cooperate with said first member to form a box-like structure.

A device of the character described comprising a pair of trough-shaped members" adapted to be arranged in spaced relation and secured to a vehicle, a rotatable shaftmounted in each member, said shafts each providedwith two screw threaded portions the inclinations of the threads of the two portions being reversely disposed, a nut mounted on each threaded portion of each shaft, a link pivotally attached to each nut, a movable trough-shaped member pivotally attached to the outer ends of the links at tached to each upper fixed member, each of said trough-shaped members adapted to be shifted verticallyby the movement of the nuts on each shaft, each movable member arranged when shifted to its up er or inoperative position to cooperate wit one of the fixed members to form a box-like structure and means to simultaneously rotate said shafts in unison.

A device of the character described comprising a pair of trough-shaped members adapted to be arranged in spaced relation and secured to a vehicle, a rotatable shaft mounted in each member, said shafts said movable trough-shaped members adapted to be shifted vertically by the movement of the nuts on each shaft, each movable member arranged when shifted to its upper or lnoperative position to cooperate with one of the fixed members to form abox-like structure, and means connecting said shafts for inducing simultaneous rotation of said shafts.
