IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CHAMBER-FAILS AND NIGHT- STOOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,378, dated May 28, 1872.

Specification describing an Improvement in Combined Chamber-Pails and Night-Stools, theinvention of SAMUEL SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kin gs and State of New York.

This invention consists in a combined chamber-pail and night-stool, composed of a body having a contracted opening at its top formed by an internal fiange, which serves as'a seat, a detachable lid to said opening, and a separate mouth or spout, covered by an independent hinged lid; the whole forming a new article of manufacture, which possesses many advantages in the double use for which the utensil is designed.

In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a view, in perspective, of the utensil in an erect position and with the detachable lid re moved Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of the same, in part, under like conditions; and Fig. 3, a View, in perspective, showing the utensil in position for emptying, with the detachable lid in its place and the spout-lid as raised or thrown back.

A is the main body, the general contour of which is an inverted frustum of a cone, having a contracted upper portion and enlarged base, in accordance with the usual construction of chamber-pails, and which is provided with the customary bail or swinging handle B. Said body A, however, instead of being formed with a sharp or wired edge at its top, which materiaily interferes with the convenience of sitting when using the vessel as a night-stool, is constructed with an internal flange, O, that has a slight dip downward.

This flange U constitutes a broad and easy seat for the occupant; also serves to improve the restricting tendency of the contracted upper portion of the vessel to spill or scatter its liquid contents over its top edge when rapidly or abruptly moving the vessel with its detachable lid D removed.

To provide for the perfect and easy emptyin g of the vessel, which the opening in the top, by reason of the flange 0, fails to do, the body 'A is formed with a separate mouth or upper spout, E, arranged in front of the body with reference to a fixed handle, F. This spout is covered by an independent lid, G, separate and distinct from the detachable lid D, so that when the latter is removed, as necessary when using the vessel as a night-stool, the spout E may be kept closed, and at other times all exposure be prevented for the escape of eflluvia by closing both lids; also, when emptyin g the vessel, dispensing with the removal ot'th'e main lid D and only opening the supplementary lid Gr, thereby still further reducing the liability of the vessel to spill, and doing away with much of the oti'ensiveness in emptying the utensil.

Unlike the lid D, which is a detachable one, the lid G is a fast one, being hinged, as at b, to a strip, 0, soldered to the top of the main body. i

What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the body A, of the internally-projecting upper flange or seat portion 0, the bail B, the detachable lid D, the spout E, and the hinged lid G, the whole living constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
