Description

H, Ho'LT.
lmprovemn-trih Photograph-ic Embossing Apparatus.
o.127,348. Y -I Patentemayzwsn.
UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE HOLT, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PHOTOGRAPHIC EMBOSSING APPARATUS.
.Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,348, dated May 28, 1872.
y thereof.
Before my invention photographic pictures had been embossed by a die, the pressure being given upon the back of the picture by a yielding bed of India rubber or similar material. In the use of this device the picture is raised slightly from the surrounding portion of the card, so as to stiften the same and give a relief appearance; but there is difficulty in positioning the picture relatively to the opening in the die, and also in holding the picture in position while being placed in the press.
My invention is made for holding the die and v picture in the proper position relatively to each other, and at the same time the elastic bed can be held in position while being `put into the press. By this apparatus the operator is enabled to place the picture correctly in relation to the opening in the die, and hence there will be no risk of the picture becoming displaced or injured by the embossing being out of position on the picture.
In the drawing, Figure l is a section of the die and elastic bed with the picture in posi-l tion, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the die.
The die a is made of metal, with an opening thereon of the desired size and shape; and b is the elastic bed, of nearly the same shape as the opening, but rather larger. This elastic bed b and the die a are shown as connected together by the spring-plate e, that is folded or bent so as to hold the two parts properly in position to each other, but allow them to be sprung apart sufliciently for the introduction of the picture z', that is to be embossed by pressure upon the same between the die and elastic back; the result of which will be the raising of the picture within the die in low relief, with a curved or convex surface that stiifens the pasteboard of the picture and improves the i appearance.
The operator is enabled freely to observe the picture through the opening of the die and place it properly7 and the spring-plate e applies the pressure that is needed for steadying the picture in place'while the apparatus is being placed in a copying or other press to apply the necessary force for embossing the card-board. The picture may be held to the die by a metallic extension of the spring, in which there is an opening the same size and shape or larger than that of the die, so that the picture is held in position while being pressed upon the elastic bed b, which in that case may be separate.
I claim as my invention- 1. The photographic embossing apparatus, composed of the die a united to the elastic bed b by the spring-plate c, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of an embossing-die with a spring-holder, for retaining the photographic picture in position relatively to said die, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 15th day of April, A. D.
