Be it known that I, Meren N. FlNKELsTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at i Greenwich, Connecticut, have invented eertain new and useful` Improvements in Lamps. ot' which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relatos to improvements in la1nps,such as head-lights for automobiles or the like, of the type in which the direct rays o" light from the lamp are shielded at the upper portion ot' the from, of the lamp so that the useful rays ot light for the one driving the ear are. directed upon the ground in front of the lamp, One of thc ob]eets of the present invention is to provide means for illuminating, lo a certain extent at least, the front surface o l the light shield so that the front of said shield will not appear so darkly contrasted with the space throuGh which the direct rays of light from tie soul-re of light are east. Further objects of the invention are to provide a practical etticient and durable lanip oi' the type mein tioued.

Referring to the drawings, the lamp Acas4 ing l0 contains a main retlectoi.' 1l, in which is hal-ai ed the source of light, lhere shown as an inramlesrcnt electric lamp l2, which is suitahlv mounted in the lamp in any weltlmown manner. Mounted upon the lamp is the lens 13, and preferably the improvements corr stitnting the, present inwntion are arranged within the lamp back of said lens.
Light inten-,opting means is provided lu' a senricirrular shield il of sheet metal. the curved edge ot which is provided with iutegral lugs l5 passed through slits in the month of the riivftor ll and turned over and soldered to the back of said reector, so that said shield covers approximately onehalt' of the said mout-h, whileits loaver'edge 16 will be located at the approximate diameter ofthe lamp.
Supported by the lower edge-of the shield 1l is a narrow horizontal metallic strip 17, which extends substantially parallel with the lower edge of the Shield, and is provided with bent-up 'bracket portions 18 at the ends, which are soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the back of the shield, the reflector being thereby located in front of the lower portion of said shield. Preferably the shield 1l is inclined slightly rearwardly while the strip 17 is inclined from its lower edge away from said shield so as to be positioned at an acute angle thereto. The adjacent surfaces 19 and 20 of the shield and strip 17 are so made as to constitute reflecting surfaces, with the result that the rays of light from a source ot light positioned properly to the rear ot the said surfaces will be reflected from the surface Q0 backwardly upon the refecting surface l5) from whence the rays are again reflected in a forward direction. This will result in illuminating the front surface lJ of the shield to such' extent that it will not. he dark as would ordinarily be thc ease, but will have a. light value more in harmony with the direct rays of light which are rast below the shield forwardly from the lamp.

lt is obvious that the invention is susceptible of modification` as parts may be omitted, added and substituted without departing from the.scope of the invention as claimed.

A. lamp comprising a casing, a light intercepting shield to one Side of the front thereof occupying approximately one-half of the area of the said front, permitting light to he emitted from the other Side thereof, and a narrow reflecting strip bridging the open front of said casing at the approximate diameter thereof, fand located in front of the edge of Said shield and extending approximately parallel with said edge, said reflecting strip being inclined from its lower edge away from said shield, whereby it is adapted to reflect light from within the lamp rearwardly upon the front surface of Suid shield.

A lamp comprising a casing, a source of light therein, light intercepting means located in the approximate plane of said source of light to one side of the front of said casing, permittin the light within the casing to he emitted from the other side of .said front, and a narrow reflecting strip located in the open front of said casing at lhe approximate diameter thereof and located in front of the edge of said shield and extending approximately parallel with said edge, whereby it is adapted to reflect light from within the lamp rearwardly upon the front surface of said shield, said reflecting strip being inclined from .its lower 'dge away from said intercepting means and being prorided at about its mid-length with a shield located in adraneecf the source of light for preventingl direct rays of lightI heilig rast forwardly from the lamp.

A lamp comprising a casing, an incandescent electric lamp, light, intercepting means located. in the approximate plane of .said inmindescent electric lamp to one side of the front of Said casing, permitting the light within the casing to be emitted from the other side of said front, and a narrow refleeting strip bridging the open front of' said casing at the approximate diameter thereof and located in front of the edge of said .shield and extending approximately parallel with said edge, whereby it is adapted to reflect light from within the lamp rearwardly upon the front surface of Said shield1 said reflecting strip beingrprovided at about its mid-length with a Shield, extendingr both above and below said strip, and located in advance of the incandescent electric lamp for preventing direct rays of light Ioeingr cast forwardly from the lamp, and the lower portion of said strip-supported shield heilig provided with a gap in which the apex of said lamp is positioned.
