Be it known that I, VIGGO S'rnruAN Kennxna Pn'rnasnn, of No. 3 Sponecksvej, Gentofte, in the Kingdom of Denmark, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cooling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperlains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
'lhisinvention refers to that kind of cooling devices which are used at the place of milking for cooling the new-milk. In the hitherto proposed devices of this kind, the cooling is accomplished by means of constant supply of fresh water (from a waterpipe or from a tank in the cooling apparatus itself), which after having sprayed the mille'tank is led off as waste water. According to this method of cooling, a large quantity of water, many times greater than the quantity of cooled milk, is wasted, especially in the hot Weather, when water is scarce.
In order to remedy this disadvantage, and in consideration of the fact that the coolingwater pumped up into the tank disposed at the place of milking, for instance, above the cow-stable, should preferably be given a certain temperature previous to being used as cooling-water, the cooling-device here referred to is, according to this invention, disposed in a closed circulating-pipe for the cooling agent, SO that the cooling-water, after use, continuously returns to the tank. Instead of ordinary Water, ice-water, cold brine, etc., may be used.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a diagram of one form of construction of this apparatus, complete, Fig. 2 is the coolingsurface shown in Fig. 1, only on a larger scale, and partially in section, while Fig. 3 is another form of the cooling-surface, together with a filter.
The cooler-casing 8 (Fig. 1) which onvelops the cooling-surface 3 is at the bottom connected with the cooling-water tank 9 by means of an adjustable pipe 10 and at the top by means of a return-pipe 11 which projects through an annular flange 12 on the cooler casing;

seated on the flange 12 and the coarse dirt is retained by a wire strainer 15 (indicated by dotted lines) from which the milk is distributed around the top of the cooling-surface 3, down which it slowly flows in an evenly distributed thin sheet, its temperature all the time being gradually reduced, and at the same time the cooling-water in the cooler-casing 8, owing to the warmth derived from the cooling of the warm milk, circulates of its own accord, in the direction from the bottom of the cooler up through the cooler-casing 8 and the pipe 1.1. to the top of the cooling-water tank 9. The cooled milk is filtered through the bacteriological filter 7 from whose bottom it runs out through a spout 5 down into the milktank 19. The neck of tho milk-tank may be covered by means of a lid 16, which may be in one piece with the spout 5, and which may carry a float 17 which will show when the milk-tank is full enough. Fig. 2 shows a suitable construction for the filter. At the lower end of the coolingsurface 3 there is disposed, between a shoulder 4: and the spout 5, a double wire-cloth strainer 6, containing a cotton-wool filter 7. The spout 5 can, by means of a screw-threaded joint, bayonetl0ck, or the like, be attached to a central opening in the coolercasing 8. I
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 3, the cooler-casing and cooling-surface are united in a conical erect shell 38 suitably corrugated or stair-shaped, which envelops the cooling-chamber, and down whose outer surface the milk flows while the bacteriological filter 7 is disposed in a special box, or container, 20, which has a detachable bottom formed with the spout 5 and can be covered with a lid 21.
From the distributing reservoir 13, with its wire strainer 15 and openings 22 in a funnelshaped plate 23, the milk is distributed around the top of the cone, and by gently flowing down the more and more widening cooling-surface, the milk is thus spread out into a thinner and thinner sheet, and is in this manner quicker cooled, and the cooling-agent is better utilized, While the final temperature is lower than in the construction with inverted cone shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with decreasing coo'ling=surfacefi From the foot of the cone, the cooled milk runs out Inigo the filter 7 through a spout'24 or the The cooling-chamber in the hollow cone 38 is, as shown by dotted; lines .v connected: with the circulating- pipes 10, 11.
