FRED J. HEIDEMAN, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 KELVINATOR COPOBA- TION, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A COBPORATICN 0F DELAWARE.
COMPRESSOR FOR REFRIGERAIING APPARATUS.
Specicatlcn of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 191,8.
Application tiled .lanuar 14, 1918. Serial No. 211,150.
To all whom it mty concern.'
Be it known that I, Fnsi) J. HEIUEMAN, n citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne und Stute of Michigan, hnve invented n certain new und useful li'nprovcment in Compressors for lt'cfrigeruting Apparatus, of which the fol lowing is a full, clenr` and exnct description, reference being hud to the l.luccompnnyino; drawings.
This invention relates` to refrigernting ninchinery und especially to the construction ci n compressor employed in such machinery.
Among the objects of the invention are the provision of a cheap, simple and efficient vulve construction for small sized compressors; the provision of a. valve and vulve body of such construction as to shield from the corrosive action of the refrigerant the base metal of which the compressor is chiefly y, constructed; the provision of a device which will be rigidly held in place when assembled, instantly 'taken apart 'when the compressor is disassembled, and in which grinding and adjustment to the valves is' gretl facilitnted; while further `advantages o the invention will become apparent as the dcscription proceeds. Y y
In the drawings accompanying und forming' n part of tins application I have shown one embodiment of my said invention, although it will be understood that these `drawings are illustrative merely und are not to be given any limiting effect. In these drawings Figure l is a sectional view through n purt of n twofcylinder compressor constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is u transverse sectional' view on the line 2--S' of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is n, separated perspective view of the diil'erent valve and closure parts.
Describing the parts by reference clntrnctorse-1 represents the cylinder block of the compressor which ispieferably of enst iron und is here shown ns provided with two purnllel cylindrical bores 2--2, although the number may be increased or diminished. Euch of these bores is lined with a cylin` dricnl sleeve 3 of non-corrodihle metul such as bronze, the upper end of euch sleeve being Y)reiernloly provided with an external annular flange 4 snugly received in a rabbet formed in the cylindrical block. The upperi face of euch Bunge may also be formed with` an annular groove 5, for obstructing leakage,
although these minor features are not necessary to the use of my invention. Superposed on top of the cylinder blck 1T ls a head member 6, also preferably formed of cast iron, and formed in alinement with each cylinder with un aperture 7 of smaller diameter than the sleeve 3. Located in each aperture is the cylindrical portion 8 of a, valve body whose lower end is formed with n laterally projecting circuler flange 9 seated flush in a, recess in. the heud member concentric with the aperture 7. This flange is of suilicient width to'overlup thesleeve 3 of the cylinder to which it is applied and the entire vulve hotly is constructed of some metal which is et 'xr 't resistent to the cori rosive effect of the refrigerant fluid and of sulcient hardness to withstand the hammering of the valves. For usc with a sulfur dioxid refrigerant. I preferably employ a hard bronze which is high in co per and lloyed chiefly with tin, though do not restrict myself to this composition or even UX these ingredients.
and receiving the arms 1x3 o a, spider w ose y bod is formed with enelongntcd cylindri-v.`
cal oss 14 projectin toward the valve sent. This boss is red or the reception of the valve st m 1 whose head 16 is located 'ne tween tie boss and valve seat so as to have s. limited range of movement. :Thelower end of this boss is countnrbored as shown at. 17 to preyent the hammering of the valve from upsetting the metal and pinching the valve s The thickness of the spider is such as to ,bring its upper surface substantially flush with the upper surface of the head member 6 so us to permit the spider to be held in place by engagement with the cover late 20 which 1s clamped upon the top of t e'liead by means of screws 21--21 arranged in any suitable number and prefercblymtraversing the heat. ,nd tapped into the cy der block,
The lower face of the cover late is formed with a channel 22 whose wi th is less than the diameter of the spider so that the latter will be and held in place by the in- Strnment` ity of the cover plate. Snrrounding euch boss is a spiral s ring 25 by means of which the valve is yie its lower end being received in a groove 26 formedin the valve head. The upper end of eaich valve stein referably projects above the top of its spi er and is squared as at 27 or otherwise formed to receive a suitable tool whereby the valve may be ground to its seat when necessary. The upper face of the top plete is formed with a flattened seat 30 for the reception of an. outlet fitting shown) which communicates with the chalinel 22 by means ot' the piisl-.iagewny 3l..
By the arrangement; lilluitrated and dcscribed the entire cylinder is incaetal in. non-v corrodible metal so that no grit, scale, or oxid from the iron can become dislodged under the Corrosive action of the refrigerant to fall into the cylinder and canse an abrau sion of its walls; the valve is likewise shielded from the corrosivel etlccts of the refrigerant since the valve body, spider, sind sprigare also preferably made ot' the saine resisting material; the clamping ofA the cover to the head and the head to the cylinder block, holds the spiders in'their seats, the valve bodies in their apertures, and the cylinder sleeves in their hores, while permit ting their easy release; the movement of the valves is limited so that quick action is Sorurcd; while cheap and rapid manufacture is possible.
lt will be understood that many changes in construction and detail may be made within the scope of my invention as defined in the claims hereto annexed.
Havingr thus described my invention what l claim is l. In a compressor for refrigclating ma cliinery, the combination with a cast-iron cylinder block having a cylinder-bore and ahead member having an aperture smaller than said bore and registering therewith, of u, non-corrodible metal sleeve mounted in said bore; a hollow body also of noircoi'io dible metal inserted in Said aperture and having a flange overlapping said sleeve at dingly depressed,
