WATER-COOLED FRONT 130R FURNACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 88, rare.
Application filed February 4, 1918. Serial No. 215,283.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER L. KNOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Cooled Fronts for Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the furnace front embodying my invention.
Fig. 4: is a rear elevation of the watercooled mantel and jamb portions.
My invention has relation to water-cooled fronts for heating and other furnaces; and is designed to provide simple and efi'ective means whereby any desired part of a furnace front, and particularly the portions thereof adjacent to the door opening, and including the door, mav be protected by water-cooled members. i
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which if have shown a preferred embodiment thereof and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that the invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications within the sec e of the appended claims.
n these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the frame work at the front of the furnace, 3 designates a hollow water-cooled mantel member preferably formed of sheet metal and which extends entirely over and across the door opening 4E, its lower edge being preferably arched, as shown. This member is provided at each side with an out wardly extending bolting flange 5 by means of which the member is secured to the vertical frame members 2. When formed of sheet metal, as preferred, it is provided with a suitable interior bracing, such as indicated, such bracing, in the present instance, consisting of overlap ing internal projectionsfi which are united y a key member 7. Any suitable bracing may, however, be employed.
8 designates vertical jamb coolers, one of which is arranged at each side of the opening 4. below the mantel member 3. These members are also provided with suitable Figs. 2 and 3 are sections taken on the lines Iii-Ill and H11I1 of Fig. 1, and,
bolting flanges 9 secured to the frame members 2. 10 designates the fore-plate or sill at the bottom of the opening 4:.
11 designates a plurality of hollow watercooled doors lying side by side and arranged to close the opening 4. Each of these doors preferably consists of a hollow sheet metal body formed with an inset portion at the inner side to seat a refractory body or lining 12. In order that these doors may seat closely, the surface of the mantel member 3 is preferably inclined downwardly and outwardly, as shown at 13 in Fig. 2, and the outer faces of the jamb coolers 8 have a similar continuing incline. The doors may be raised and lowered by any suitable means, such as the cords and pulleys shown in my Patent No. 1,168,649, of January 18, 1916. The end portions of the mantel member are preferably inset, as shown at 141 in order to form uides for the side door member; and the Jamb coolers have similarly inset portions 15 for the same purpose. The mantel and jamb coolers are provided with suitable circulating connections, the inlet pipes for the mantel and j amb coolers being shown at 16; the outlet pipes for said coolers at 17 the inlet pipes for the door members at 18 and the outlet pipes for said members at 19. Each door member has a separate intake and outlet pipe, and each of these pipes is provided with a flexible portion 18 or 19, respectively. The intake pipes for all watercooled members may be connected to a common supply pipe 20. All the outlet pipes are also shown as arranged to discharge into a single offtake pipe 21, the discharge being preferably into funnels 22 carried by said pipe, so as to permit the escape of any steam which may be generated in the water-cooled members.
The doors may be raised and lowered by any suitable or usual connections, not shown, and which may permit independent move ment thereof.
It will be readily seen that by thearrangement of the downwardly and outwardly inclined faces of the mantel and jamb coolers, the doors will be caused to tightly scat against and hug these members in their movements. By reason of the arched form of the lower edge of the mantel member 3, the side door members may be made somewhat shorter than the central member.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those familiar with this art and Who are acquainted with the necessity for efi'ective protection of furnace fronts, since the invention provides means of simple and practical characterwhereby substantially all those portions of a furnace front which are usually most subject to the destructive action of heat are formed of metallic Water-cooled members through which an efi'ective Water circulation may be maintained. By formin the Water-cooled members of sheet meta they are sufficiently elastic to enable them to expand and contract Without cracking; and when any member becomes unserviceable it can be readily removed and replaced by a new member.
I claim:
1. A Water-cooled front for furnaces; comprising a Water-cooled frame having a door opening therein, and a plurality of vertically movable Water-cooled doors normally closing said opening, said doors being mounted for independent movement on the 'frame and each having its own water-circulating con nections, said doors seating edge to edge, substantially as described.
/ 2. A Water-cooled front for furnaces, comprising a water-cooled frame consisting of vertical jamb members forming opposite sides of a single unobstructed door opening, and a horizontally extending mantel member forming the-top of such opening, said jamb and mantel members having door-seating and guiding surfaces, and'a plurality of Water-cooled doors normally closing said opening, said doors being seated edge to edge and being mounted for independent movement, and each door having its own water circulating connections, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
LUTHER L. KNOX.
