Delaware, and State ofIowa, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates and refers more particularly to a dovice ofthat type in which the gate can be vertically raised and lowered while inclosed POSltlOIL. J
Among the salient objects ofthe invention are to provide a construction in which the gate can be raised to a predeterminedheight so as to permit small stock such as hogs and the like to pass under the gate, while the gate is closedto other stock such as cattle and in which when the gate is in such position, it is fixedly locked'against being raised or lowered bythe stock; to provide'in a device of the character described improved means for raising and lowering the gate, the operating mechanism of which cannot be knocked ortw'isted out of placeby the stock, such mechanism preferably consisting of a single cable; to provide in a construction of the character referred to, novel means of locking, taking the form of double locking deviceswhereby the locking mechanism of the gate can be actuated by either the hand or the foot and which is self-locking whenthe gateis swung. into its closed position; to provide aconstruction in which the parts of the lockingdevice which are more apt to get out of order, are protected by the frame of the gate itself and in which the various locking mechanisms. are so constructed as to be simple in operation and yet effectively perform their function; and in general to provide/an improved construction of the character referred to. i 'Inf the drawings:

Referringto the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the posts at thegate opening. The gate designated as a whole 3 is hingedto the post 1 by the eye-bolts 4 or any suitable hinged construction may be used. This gate consists of end frame members 5 and (ipreferably of U-shaped or channel construction as shown in the drawings, these end frame members or uprights being secured by means of the cross tubes or side members 7 and 8, and intermediate tie wires 9. The gate is supported centrally by means of a pair of channel irons 10 and 11,.which are spaced apart to permit the cables or tie rails to pass between them; these I channels. being held together by the cross members 12. If desired, the tie rails can be tightened by means of the bolts 13 as shown moreclearly in Fig. 9. i e i j e Describing now more in detail the manner in which the gate issomounted that it can be raisedand lowered vertically, top and bottom rails 7 and 8 are pivoted to the posts 5 and 6 by means of pivotpins 14 and15 respectively.
Describing1 more in detail the manner in which the post 5 is pivotally mounted relative to the eye-bo1ts 4;, through the post is mounted a short shaft or red 16, held in position by cotter pins 17, this shaft resting on the upper face of the eye-bolts 4. 'The height of the gate relative to the ground or the fence posts 1 and 2 can be adjusted by means of a plurality of holes or apertures 18, through one of which the shaft 16 extends. This shaft rides i frictional/ 11y on the upper faeeofthe eye-bolt 4, .when the gate is swung into its open or closed .position. V
The gate can be vertically raised by lifting it up at its front end and can then be locked in any such position of adjustment by means of a cable 19 and the cam actuated clamp '20. One end of the cable is secured as shown at 21 to a threaded bolt 22 at the rear end of the gate and the cable then extends downwardly around the pulley 23', in the form of a sheave, and then upwardly through the lock (in a manner hereinafter d'e's'cribe'd)-around the upper pulley 24 and thence downwardly to the rear end of the gate where it is secured at 25 to an ad' justi-ng bolt'26. The vertical length of the cable at the front of the'gate'passes between a pair of jaws 27 and 28; the jaw 28 can be forced inwardly to impingethe wire against the stationary jaw 27 means of a manually operated cam lever 29, fitted as shown at 3(l'between two side plates 31,'which are secured to the gate. The opposite faces of these jaw members are corrugated as shown 32,- and' 33, the action being such that when the jaws are in closed position, they will impinge against the cable 19 and thus lockthe gate-in its then position of adjustment. The cable can be released by merely swinging the IeVerQOT outwardly to release the movable jaw member whereupon the gate can be lowered orraised.
Referring now to the latch mechanism for locking the gate in closed position, I preferably provide upper and lower locking members designated 34 and 35 respectively. A pair of spaced clamping plates 36 and 87 are secured to the post '6 by means of bolts 38,
the plate being provided for this purpose with ears 39, through which the bolts extend, it being understood, of course, that the plates are apertured to fit over the post. The rear of each of these plates is apertured as shown at 40 to receive a trip rod 41 Between each pair of clamping platesis secured a latch member 42 comprising an apertured body portion 43 and a latch portion 44. A portion of this latch is adapted to fit around the keeper iron 45 secured to the post 2. a Each of these latch members is so mounted to have limited and horizontal movement so that they can wipe by the keepers.
Describing now the manner oflocki'ng' and unlocking thelatch members, pivoted tothe posts as shown 'at46 are a pair of locking dogs 47, being understood that there is a pair of these dogs for each latch member, each of these dogs having a downwardly projecting, locking tooth 48 adapted to seat in a corresponding recess 49 formed at either side of the latch member. When the locking dog is in its lowered position the teeth engage the recesses 49 and-lockthe'latch member against horizontal movement. The locking dogs areactuated by the trip rod 41, the trip rod having a pair of T-shaped head members 50 and 51, which project over the thus the jaws of the latch member can wipe by the keeper and the gate swung open.
The trip lever is normally held upwardly by means of the spring 53 so that it will not operate the dogs by dropping down. When 'this'tr-ip lever is released, the jaws fall down onto the latch member, which, however, remains in open position until the jaws wipe against the keeper when the gate is closed, whereupon the teeth of the locking dogs pass into engagement with the recesses of the latch and the gate is automatically locked. The locking mechanism is so arranged that when the gate is open, there are no protruding mechanisms or parts to catch the harness or cattle crowding through.
The operation of the device is apparent from the foregoing description and. need not be described in detail. The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except asset forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gate, the combination with an end member pivoted to swing on a vertical axis, of a main body portion pivoted to swing on a horizontal axis whereby it can be raised or lowered to any given position of adjustment relative to the end member, and means for positively locking said body portion in any adjusted position comprising a cable secured to one end of the gate and extending around relatively fixed guides and between clamping members and leverage mechanism for forcing said clamping members into locking engagement with the cable.
2. In a gate, the combination with an end member pivoted to swing on a vertical axis, of a main body portion pivoted to swing on a horizontal axis whereby it can be raised or lowered to any given position of adjustment, and means for positively locking said body portion in said adjusted position, comprising a flexible member movable relative to the gate and leverage operated clamping jaws for locking said flexible member against such movement.-
3. In a gate, the combination with an end member pivoted to swing on a vertical. axis, of a main body portion pivoted to swing on a horizontal axis whereby it can be raised or lowered to any given position of adjustment, and means for positively locking said body portion to saidadjusted position, comprising a cable, guides around which said cable eXends, clamping jaws mounted be tween said guides and between which the cable passes and a manually operated mechanism for forcing said jaws into locking e11- gagement with the cable.
4.. In a gate, the combination with an end member pivoted to swing on a vertical axis, of a main body portion pivoted toswing on a horizontal axis whereby it can be raised or lowered to any given position of adjustment, and means for positively locking said body portion to said adjusted position, comprising a locking mechanism having manually operated. olamping jaws, guides mounted above and below said jaws, and a cable extending around said guides and through said jaws and secured to the body portion atpoints remote from said guides.
