A. c. ARNOLD & 0. e; HAUSCHILDT.
' Improvement in Sash-Balances.
N0, 127,292, Patented May 28,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO C.ARNO1ZD AND OTTO G. HAUSCHILDT, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-BALANCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,292, dated May 28, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whomfllt may concern:
Be it known that we, ALONZO G. ARNOLD and Orro G. HAUSGHILDT, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Sash- VVeights, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawing.
Our invention consists in providing a sashweight with an eye of novel form, which. can be cast without the use of a core, and which also enables the cord to be attached readily and securely and in line with the center of the weight. p 1
Figure l is a perspective view of our weight with the cord attached; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same on the line was of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3, a top-end view of the same.
In constructing our weight we make its'body A of any suitable form, and provide it near the upper end with a large hole or opening, a, entering on one side and extending a little more than half way through; and also, in the upper end, with a narrow vertical slot or recess, 1), entering from the opposite side to the hole a, and extending inward a little past the center, and downward far enough to join or open into the hole a, as shown in Fig. 2. The slot or recess 1) is made of a width equal to the thickness of'the cord to be used; but the hole or opening a is made large enough to receive a large knot 011 the end of the cord. The cord is attached by inserting its end into the slot 1) and out through the hole a, and then form in g a knot, c, on its end'and drawing it back so as to seat the knot in the hole a, as shown. The knot, being too large to pass up through the slot, holds the cord securely to the weight.
We are aware that eyes of various forms have been devised to facilitate the attachment of the cord to sash-weights, but all such eyes require the use of a core in casting them. The great advantage of our eye over all others of its class is, that, while it possesses all their advantages, it can be cast without using a core, thus enabling us to produce our improved weight as cheaply as those of the ordinary form.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- The weight A having the vertical slot or recess b and the hole a arranged therein, as described, whereby the weight can be cast with out a core, and the cord attached in the manner shown, causing the weight to hang vertically and prevent chafing or wearing of the cord, as set forth.
