PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT FORBOX-STAYING; MACHINES THE LIKE.
Specication of Letters'latent.
' Application led September 15, 1916. Serial No. 120,293.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that we, EDGAR M. HAW'KINS and OTTO M. HOCH, citizens of the United States, and vresidents of Rochester, in the county 0f Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefull Tmprovements in Pressure Adjustments for Box-Staying Machines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a, pressure adjustment for presses, punching machines, box-staying machines and similar machines wherein a reciprocating actuating part is used and wherein the power is transmitted through said actuating part to the work-performing element only when the latter is in close' proximity tothe work to be operated upon.
The main object of this invention' resides the provision-,of means for varying the effective length of the actuating means for thev work-performing element in machines of the'type above referred to,whereby the pressurey exerted upon the work may be varied at the will of the operator.
In carrying out'the object of this invention, means is providedy to connect the reciprocating slide which carries the movable work-performing element, tothe collapsible link which connects the said slide to the power transmission means or shaft, in such manner that the distance between the point of connection between thek actuating element and slide and the point where ythe power is transmitted to they actuating element may be varied. Furthermore, provision is made for this adjustment in such manner that the pressure-adjusting means for the tucker knife, when the invention is incorporated ina box stayer, will not be interfered with in any way. Other features Vand advantages, of the invention willl be referred toin the detailed description of the invention which follows.
One embodiment of our invention is illus'- trated inthe drawings, in which:-l
Figure 1 is a` front elevation of a box stayer having the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side'elevation of a portion of the stayer; and
Fi 3 is a fragmental detail sectional view showing the manner in which the adjusting pin is constructed and mounted.
The drawings illustrate a box stayer which includesY broadly, a frame 1', a stationary die' 2 and a movable die 3, which latter is carried by a suitable slide 4. Mounted in the upper portion of the frame 1 is a power transmission shaft 5. The actuating means for the movable die 3, which takes the form of a pitman extending between the' power transmission shaft and the slide 4, comprises van element 6 whichis secured to they end of the shaft 5, eccentrically, by suitable means 7. Thiselement 6 is provided with a shoulder 8 whichl coperates with a similar shoulder 9 onY a second transmission element O, which latter is pivot'ally and slidably connected tothe eleinent 6 by meansof a pin 1 1 and is provided at its upper endY with a linger 12 which is arrangedy to be wiped by a cam 13, on the transmission shaft 5. The pinrll is securedy to the element 6 and extend'sinto a slot 14k' in the element 10, and onthis pin is mounted a spring 15 which continuously bearsY against thezelement 10 and normally .tends to.l move theY shouldersV 8"V and' 9 on the respective'elements l6 and 10 into engagement with each other,but permits the disengagement of said shoulders whenthe' cam 13 wipes'the finger 12 on the element 10. The transmission element 6 extends downwardly from its point of. connection with the shaft 5, andr at its lower end has an elon gated longitudinally extending slot 16 through which extends a pin which includes a member' 17. This pin member isv rotatably mounted on the movable die Siny a lug 18thereo'n'. Extending through the lug 18 and into acircumferential groove 2() in the pin member 17, isy screw 21 which prevents the longitudinal movement ofthe pin member with respect to the movable die. The diameter of the portion of the-pin member 17 which is ,located within the slot 16 inv the element 6, is less than the length of the slot, sothat the element 6 may move with respect to the pin member without imparting movement tothe movable die 3. The 'second' transmission element 10 is provided, at its lower end, with a circular opening yhaving a bushing' 22 therein, through which bushing the pin member 17 extends. This pin member 17 is provided with an eccentric trunnion23 which projects rearwardly from the velement 10, but which is coaxial with the portion ofthe pin member which is located within the lug 18.v This trunnion 23 is revolubl'y mount-cul inA a second piu member 24,.
Patented July 16,1918."
which, together `with the member 17, forms the pin connection between the slide 4c and Y block 26 which extends rearwardly from the slide for the accommodation of the adjusting means for regulatingv the pressure of the tucker knife 30, movably mounted on the rear end of the die 3 for vertical movement therewith. A threaded stem 30', extending upwardly from this knife through an opening in the block 26, carries a pressure spring 29 which expands between the under side of the block 26 and the knife 30 for exerting downward pressureon the latter, and also carries above the block 26 an adjusting sleeve 27 and a clamp nut 28 therefor, the said sleeve being operative to adjust the pressure of the spring 29 in usual manner.
AFormed on the forward end ofthe pin l member .17 is a notched wheel 31 having a nut 31 cast thereon by means of which the pin member 17 may be rotated. This pin member 17 is held in its various adjusted positions by means of a two-pointed pawl 32 which is normally pressed into engagement with the notched wheel 31 by a flat spring 33.
Thus when the movable die 3 is descending, the cam 13 will maintain theshoulders 8 vand 9 of the elements 6 and 10 in disengaged relation, but when the die nears the completion of its stroke and is about to apply pressure tothe work, the cam 13 is rendered ineffective and the spring 15` operates to rengage the shouldersl 8 and 9, so that the furtherdownward movementof the die will cause pressure to be exerted upon the work, as there will be a direct connection between lthe transmission shaft 5 and the die. However, if resistance is offered to the movable die in its downward movement-as by the presence of the operators hand between the dies-before the cam 13 disengages the finger 12, the spring 15 will be inoperative to rengage the shoulders 8 and 9, and, consequently, the subsequent rotation of the transmission shaft will result vin no direct pressure upon 4the movable die 3. Undery these conditions, the only pressure exerted by the die will be that exerted bythe weight of the die itself and its connected parts, and this is overcome in the present case by means of a suitable spring 311, which is attached to the 'yoke 36 and to an upper portion of the frame 1 by suitable adjustable means 35.
When yit is desired to vary the pressure which the movable dies. exerts Vupon the work, the pawl 32V is disengaged vfrom the. notched wheel 31 andthe pin member 17 is rotated in the proper direction, that is to say, to cause its eccentric portion, which is located vbetween the lug 18 and the trunnion l23, to force the element 10 either upwardly or downwardly. This adjustment of the pin member 17 will vary the effective length of the actuating means for the movable vdie which includes thel elements 6 and 10.
Thus the invention provides, in a machine where a safety device such as described in the present application is used', means for varying the pressure exerted by the workperforming element and provides specifically a composite pin which connects theV die-carrying slide of the box-stayer, which is illustrated in the present drawings, to the die actuating element or pitman. The composite pin, as described, comprises arotatable member and a member stationary with the die-carryingslide, which latter member supports the adjustment means for the tucker knife, and it is, therefore, essential that this member be held stationary with respect to the slide and the said adjustment means, e
