E NEST WALTER, OF BELLEVILLE, NEW JERSEY, AssienoR r0 vERoNA CHEMICAL COMPANY, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION or NEW ERSEY.
DEVIGE FOR'ROLLING CYLINDRICAL BODIES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST VVALTER, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Belleville, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Rolling Cylindrical Bodies, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to a devicefor rolling barrels and is adapted for use in plants and establishments where cylindrical bodies,
such as barrels, drums, tanks andthe like,: are moved about both empty and filled, and sometimes for comparatively, long hauls where the places in the plant from and to which the barrels must be moved are separated by a considerable distance. It is customary at present to either roll the barrel along the ground by manual labor, which is somewhat intermittent and slow and requires considerable labor, another way being to use acarriage heavy enough to support a barrel or drum and rolling the barrel by means of skids oran inclined way onto the carriage. This also requires considerable manual labor, taking usually two or three men in case of a full barrel, and more in the case of larger sized drums which are-filled with liquid. These above described methods at present in use are expensive and slow.
My invention relates to a device which moves the barrel without lifting it from the ground and that provides means for its steady rolling, since the force is applied by means of the device so that the friction is minimized and the rolling of the barrel is thus made steady and comparatively quick.
The invention is further designed to pro-. vide a device of this-kind which is easily portable, not being necessarily strong enough or heavy enough to support a barrel, but be- .ing in turn supported by the barrel when it is in place and acting to prevent any material relative movement between the carriage and the barrel wh1le the carriage or frame is in position on the barrel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind in which the rollers that engage the barrel, when the device is on the barrel, can also be used for supporting the device so that it can be easily rolled along the ground when the device is not on the barrel. V v v The invention is adapted for wooden bar- Specification of Letters Patent.

to a barrel, but this is simply for thepurA pose of making the description clear, since the devicecan be used on any form of cylindrical body that is to be moved along the ground by'rolling it without necessarily lifting it.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which one embodiment of the invention is shown, it being understood, however, that different forms of the device may be used and the parts differently disposed to bring about the same result, but the embodiment that is illustrated shows one of the preferred forms of the device. I
In said drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of frame, the view illustrating the frame in place on a barrel, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1.
The device primarily consists of a carriage or frame that is constructed with rollers to minimize the friction between the device and the barrel when the device is placed over a barrel; The device when on a barrel being preferably suspended from contact with the ground and having means thereon whereby the barrel, or other cylindrical body on which the device is supported, can be" moved. In the form shown the frame comprises side portions or members, these side portions each having a beam 10 which is a draft beam in the form illustrated, the side portions having means for supporting an upper roller or rollers, such means, in the form shown, consisting of brackets on each side portion, each bracket comprising an inclined beam 11 and a substantially vertical beam 12,, thus providing a triangular side portionwhich, with the opposite triangular sideportion, provides a means for supporting several of the rollers. The rollers 1.3 and the rollers 14, are fixed in the sense that they are arranged in the frame so that they have no movement relative to each other, these rollers being arranged re against in oi einent on the axles by suitable be readily seen that when the frame is pulled by suitable traction ineans the draft be sleeper the br'aielie't supported thereonp'us on t11 eterre1u1reu 1i the axles and the rollers' aforesaid and the barrel i's'ir'o lled along the" greund; since this pressure" free 7 the roll-ere 13 and 14' is appliecrjir rear of beams 10- riitge" 011' a barrel;
