Be it known that I, FRANK W. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented f aY certain new and useful Improvement in- Protectors kfor Water-Gages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y
rlhis invention relates to means for inclos.- ing the glass tubes of water gages for use on steam boilers in such manner that in the event 'of the breaking of the tube the flying glass and escaping steam cannot come into injurious Ycontact with the engineeror other person in the vicinity. Y

Thef frame composed of the parts described, excluding of course the clamping strips 10, screws, and glass, may be and preferably is a single unitary casting, and with its panes of glass in place may be applied to andremoved from the holder bodily.
The holder may be variously constructed, but a simple andjeflicient holder is herein shown as comprising a back 13 provided with the forwardly extending longitudinal taper flanges 14 to coperate with the like flanges 6 of the frame; the top and bottom seats 15 to coperate with the top and loottoin openings 'of the the tubular ioo bosses 16 to receive the water gage glasstube 17 and counterbored and screwthreaded to receive the boiler connections, only the upper boiler-connection 18 being shown; the two horizontal-ly extending screwthreaded projections 19 and the taper dovetail 20 to receive the flange 21 of the exhaust tube 22. The back 13 is provided with an opening provided with a registering opening 21 for the escape of fine particles of glass and the free steam resulting from the breaking of y the water glass.
`The water glass may be set steam and water tight in the bosses 16 by means of gaskets 25 or other packing means.
' As will be observed by reference especially to Figs. 7 and 8, both the holder and the glazed frame are self-contained, and the latter is capable of being Vbodily applied to and removed from the holder.

The glazed frame is applied to the holder by slipping it in between the bosses 16 so that its top and bottom openings register with and engage the seats 15 on'said bosses and the lianges 6 engage the flanges 14;, and lthen the frame and holder are united by means of screws or bolts 26 applied to the lugs 8 and engaging the screwthreaded pro- Ail() jections 19. Preferably lock-washers 27 are interposed between the heads of the screws or. bolts 26 and the lugs 8 to prevent said screws or bolts from workingv loose. By thus positively connecting the glazed frame with the holder at top and bottom, a very secure tie is made that prevents the bosses 16 from spreading when under pressure. The anges 6 and 11 so interlock as to brace the frame against spreading laterally. Thus provisionV is made to meet all of the exigencies of service. The metal-to-metal lit of the parts of the frame-and the holder is such that no packing is required to make the device substantially steam tight.
