This invention relates to bufling machines and .isillustrated in connection with a maat 1, and upon it are mounted two bufling chine for'buffing the bottoms of boots and shoes.
Machinesfor buflingboots and shoes com monly comprise two bufling rolls mounted upon 'a rotary shaft, each roll having a hub about which is wound a comparatively thick body of felt; and in use the roll is covered by a piece of sandpaper which is wound about the felt backing and fastened in some suitable manner.
There are various types of these rolls which differ principally in themanner in which the sandpaper is fastened, but the present invention is not concerned with any particular type. v v 7 Such rolls rapidly get out of true, and heretoforeit has been customary in truing them to employ a flat strip of wood to which To true up a roll the operator removes the sandpaper cover, starts the machine, and applies to the felt the tool which has been described above. Such a procedure is at best a crude one and except when performed by a skilful artisan produces undesirable results. The object of the present invention is to do away with this hand method and to provide a truing device which shall obviate the former necessity for skill and at the same time perform the truing operation with precision and despatch.

Referring now to the accompanying drawing, the figure shows in perspective a portion of a machine for buffing boots and shoes in. which the present invention is embodied.

Mounted in the sides of the frame of the machineand extending parallel to theroll shaftl is a rod or track 3; andslidably and rotatably mounted upon said rod is a tool holder 4, said holder having hubs 11 through which said rod passes so that the holder is in effect pivoted to the frame of the machine and may be swun into and out of operative position. The forward portion of the holder 4 is formed as a yoke between the arms of which is held a second rod 6 upon which is mounted a truing tool 5 herein shown as half-round in cross section and covered on-its curved underside with sandpaper 13. Fast to the upper flat face of the tool 5 are two hangers 15, 17 having eyes through which passes the rod 6 so that the tool may be moved both angularly about said rod and lengthwise thereof, said latter movement being possible by reason of the fact that the distance between the outside faces of the two hangers is less than the distance between the inner faces of the arms of the yoke.

In order to permit the whole truing device to be removed readily from one machine and attached to another the sides of the frame of the machine are provided with sockets one of which is adapted to receive a reduced end portion of the rod 3 and the other to receive a locking bolt 27 which is slidable in a socket in the end of saidrod and is continuously urged outwardly by a spring 18. A pin 21 fast to said locking bolt 27 furnishes means for withdrawing said bolt and cooperates with a slot 22 to form a bayonet jo nt whereby said bolt may be held in retracted position when' it desired to remove the truingdevice.
Although the invention has been set forth in connection with a particular machineit should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the articular machine shown and described. aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. Th combination with a butting machine havin a plurality of b-ufling rolls arranged witl? their axes in alinement, of a track on the frame of the machine extending parallel to said axes, a holder slidable on said track whereby it may be moved into position opposite a selected roll, and angularly movable in a path at right angles to said axes, and a truing tool carried by said holder.
2. The combination with. a buffing machine having a plurality of buffing rolls arranged with their axes in. alinement of a track on the frame of the machine extending, parallel to said axes, a holder slidable on said track whereby it may be moved into position opposite a selected roll, and angularly movable in a path at right angles to said axes, a truing tool carried by said holder, and means for rocking and reciprocating said tool.
3. The combination with a bufiing machine having a plurality of bufling rolls ar ranged with their axes in alinei'n'ent, of a rod supported by the frame of the machine and extending parallel to the axes of the buiiing rolls, a holder mounted for angular movement about the rod toward and from the rolls and for movement longitudinally of the rod to bring the holder opposite a selected roll, and a truing tool carried by said holder. r p v p 4. The combination with a buiiin 'machine having a plurality of butting ro ls arranged with their axes in alinement, of a rod supported by the frame of the machine and extending parallel to the axes of the butfing rolls, a holder mounted for angular movement about the rod toward and: from the rolls and for movement longitudinally of the rod to bring the holder opposite a selected roll, a truing tool carried by said holder, and means for limiting the angular movement of the holder toward the rolls.
5. The combination with a buffing machine having an abrading roll anexhaust conduit for carrying away the dust generated by said roll, of a truing device comprising a holder pivoted to the frame of the machine and arranged to be swung into and out of operative position, a tool can 'ried by said holder, and a stop also carried by said holder and arranged to contact with a wall of the exhaust conduit to arrest the swlilnging movement of the holder toward the r0 r 6.
