AUTOMATIC TRIP FOB SHOCKING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,"BERT R. BENJAMIN, a citizen ofthe United States,-residing at Oak Park, in thecounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful- Improvements in Automatic Trips for Shocking-Machines, of' whichthe following is a full, clear, and {exact specification. I
"My invention relates to automatic trips for shocking machines. "It has heretofore b een proposed to trip thesheaf delivery member of ashocking machine ofthe swinging delivery member type into operation prior to the time that the sheaf is ejected beyond the edge of the binder deck sothatthis sheaf delivery member is'moved upward and drivenintoengage'ment with the sheaf while' the latter is opposite the edge of the 'binderdeck. This 'has'been accomplished by' providing a trip upon thedeck engageable with a sheaf as the latter moves out over the same and operatively connected to the controlling mechanism for the sheaf delivery member'in such a manneras to actuate said controlling mechanism at the-desired time. My invention has for its object toactuate this controlling mechanism for the sheaf delivery member in an improved manner so thatwhile the sheaf delivery -member is given its desired initial -movement before engagement with-the sheaf, the controlling m'echanism therefor', instead of being actuated by'co'ntact with the :sheaf as it is discharged from the binder, isactuated by a n'oving part on the binder operable at a predeterminedtime with respect to the sheaf "discharging op'eration thereof. I attainthis object and certain others which will be clearly apparent-to; those skilled in the art,
by=means of improved operative connections between the binding mechanism of the binder and the controlling mechanism of the sheaf delivery member, all as "hereinafter more fully set forth.

'Tl1e shocker shown for purposes of illustration is of the Raney'type comprising a frame 1 having a swinging sheaf delivery member 2 rotatable through" 180 degrees in a substantially upright plane with ashaft 3 journaled on the frame in bearings i and normally restingin prostrate position upon a support 5 pro ecting subblewardly from the binder 6 at a point beneath its deck 7. This fork acts to deliver the sheaves ejected from the binder to the shock receptacle of the shocker (not shown) and is driven from a suitable source of power by a chain and sprocket connection 8, 9 and a resilient pitman and crank connection 10, 11 operatively connected between the shaft 3 and a shaft 12 'journaled onthe frame 1 beneath the shaft 3. As shown, a clutch 13 is provided on this shaft having a clutch finger 14, which clutch acts to connect the sheaf delivery member to the power mechanism when desired, and is controlled by a spring-pressed clutch controlling member 14* normallyin the operativeposition'shown in Fig. 1 and movable laterally outof that position to release the clutch and connect the fork and rotated about a pivot 15 on the frame. This member 14 is operatively connected through a crank and link connection 16, 17 with a link 18 pivoted on a grainwardly extending support 19 on the shocker frame and having preferably a rectangular "shaped opening 20 therein through which extends the longitudinally extending shank of an actuating member 21 journaled at 22 beneath the binder deck and preferably having an end of rectangular crosssection so that when this member 21 is turned about itsvaxis, the link connection 16, 17 will be'actuated to throw out the clutch controlling member 14 and'permit the fork to be raised about itspivot by the power mechanism.
In my improvement this member 21 is provided with an upstanding crank or arm 23 pivotally connected to axlongitudinally and grainwardly extending link 2 1 which is in turn pivotally connected to the-angularly disposed lower end of a tripping member 25 ournaled at 26 on a suitable strap 27 carried on the frame of the binding mechanism 28; As shown, this member 25 has a portion extending stubblewardly and upwardly from its pivot having a cam shaped extremity 29 thereon disposed in the path of a lug 30 on the rotating cam wheel 31 of the binding mechanism, which is connected through the link 32 to the needle shaft 33 and needle 34 thereon through the usual crank arm 35. As in the usual construction, the binder mechanism is provided with the usual discharging mechanism 36, clutch controlling mechanism 37, clutch 38, packers 39, and is also preferably provided with supplemental stubblewardly extending kicker forks 40 operatively connected to these packers and resiliently mounted at 41 at their outer ends, having upturned ends 42 extending through a supplemental binder deck 43, forming an extension of the deck 7 in such a manner that they engage and force outward a sheaf over'this supplemental deck by impulses delivered to the sheaf at different points along its length. Further, as in the usual construction, a compressor trip 44 is provided which controls the operation of the binding and discharging mechanism, the compressor trip acting as an abutment for the grain packed against the same by the packers 39, and, when a sheaf of suflicient size has been formed, moving backward to throw out the clutch controlling member 37 and throw in the binding and discharging mechanism in the usual sequence, the bundle being bound by the. needle 34 and then ejected by the sheaf discharge arms 36 to the supplemental kicker forks 40, which then carry the same outward over the deck to the sheaf delivery member 2 of the shocker.
In the operation of my improved construction, as the binding needle 34 is thrown into' operation by the tripping member 44, the cam 31 will obviously be rotated in a clockwise direction, carrying with it the lug 30 so that after the sheaf is bound and as it is being discharged, 6. 6., when the parts are in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, this lug 30 will strike the cam end 29 of the member 25 and throw the same backward to the dotted line position. This movement will result in a stubbleward movement of the link connection 24 and a lateral movement of the link connection 17 18 in such a manner that the clutch controlling member 14 is thrown laterally about its pivot out of engagement with the clutch finger 14 so that, through this clutch connection, the sheaf delivery member 2 will be operatively connected to its power mechanism and raised about its pivot from its normal position on the support 5. This will obviously occur before the sheaf has passed beyond the edge of the binder deck so that the fork will be given a decided upward impetus, tending to drive its tines into the sheaf while the latter is in the air'opposite the edge of the use a supplemental safety mechanism of the type used in the Raney construction comprising a supplemental longitudinally extending member 45 operatively connected at its rear end at 46 to the crank connection 16 and at its front end-rotatably mounted at 47 upon the support 5, which member 45 is provided with a plurality of upstanding arms 48 spaced apart longitudinally from each other and extending upward in a plane parallel to the plane of movement of the fork. and on the opposite side of the latter from the binder deck. As this construction, however, specifically forms no part of my invention, it need not be here more fully described, al-
though it is to be understood that my invention may cooperate with'such mechanism if desired.
It is to be noted that in this connection the means for giving the initial upward movement to the sheaf delivery member prior to the discharge of the sheaf from beyond the edge vof the binder deck are entirely independent of the. sheaf so far as contact with thelatter is concerned and that they are very positive in their operation, theimechanism necessarily having to operate because connected to the binding mechanism, which must operate as each sheaf is bound and ejected. Further, by so connecting this mechanism to the binding mechanism, thetiming of the same is rendered very eflicient. These. and other'advantages of'my improved construction will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
. While I have in this applicationsspecifically described but one form of my invention, it is, ofcourse, to be understood that the form chosen for purposes of illustration may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention and that I intend to include within the scope of this application all those forms thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.7 1. In combination, a binder including a sheaf discharging member, an upwardlyand' said last mentioned means position, and
2. In combination, a binder frame sheaf binding and discharging mechanism t ereon including a sheaf discharging member, an upwardly and rearwardly swinging sheaf delivery member movable through 180 for carrying a sheaf discharged by said discharging mechanism, and means distinct from said sheaf discharging member and located outside the path of movement of the sheaf for controlling the operation of the sheaf delivery member.
3. In combination, a binder frame, a binder deck thereon, sheaf discharging mechanism including a discharging member, a sheaf delivery member normally positioned beneath said binder deck, positive means for oscillating said delivery member in a substantially upright plane and through 180 for depositing sheaves prostrate and returning said delivery member to normal means distinct from said sheaf discharging member for controlling the operation of said delivery member operatively connected between said oscillating means and said discharging mechanism.

In combination, a binder frame, sheaf binding and discharging mechanism thereon including a knotter shaft, a rotary member carried by said shaft, sheaf delivery mechanism including an upwardly and rearwardly swinging sheaf delivery member for carrying away a sheaf delivered by said discharging mechanism, and means located outside the path of movement of said sheaf for controlling the sheaf delivery mechanism, being actuated by said rotary member during each revolution thereof.
5. In combination, a binder frame, sheaf binding and discharging mechanism including a knotter shaft, a tripping member carried by said frame, an upwardly and rearwardly swinging sheaf delivery member for Copies of this patent may be obtained for carrying away a sheaf delivered by said discharging mechanism, means for controlling said delivery member operatively connected between the same and the tripping member, and means carried on said knotter shaft for actuating said tripping member at a predetermined time.

In combination, a binder frame, sheaf binding and discharging mechanism carried thereon including a rotary cam wheel having a projection thereon, a tripping member entirely outside of the path of movement of the sheaf but pivoted on said frame having a cam-shaped end engageable by said projection 'at predetermined times, means including an upwardly and rearwardly swinging sheaf delivery member for carrying away a sheaf delivered by said discharging mechanism, and operative connections between the last mentioned means and said tripping member whereby said means is operated after the completion of the operation of said binding mechanism.
7. In combination, a binder frame, a binder deck thereon, sheaf binding and discharging mechanism including a knotter shaft carried on said frame, a shocker operatively connected to said frame, an upwardly and rearwardly swinging sheaf delivery member carried on said shocker and normally occupying a prostrate position beneath said binder deck, means for operating said sheaf delivery member, means entirely outside of the path of movement of the sheaf for controlling the actuation of said operating mechanism, and actuating mechanism therefor carried by said knotter shaft.
