J. F. LOUGHR AN.
DETACHABLE SLEIGH RUNNER.
APPLICATION FILED 1mm. 1911. RENEWED MAY 31. I918.

A TTORNE Y UNITED STATES PATEN OFFICE.
DETACHABLE SLEIGH-RUNNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed'J'anuary 10, 1917, Serial No. 141,702. Renewed May 31, 1918. Serial No. 237,676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. LOUGI-IRAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chehalis, in the county of Lewis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Sleigh-Runners, of which the following is a full, true, and exact specification.
My invention relates to detachable sleigh runners for wheeled vehicles and has for its principal object: to provide an improved and novel type of detachable sleigh runner which may be quickly and easily clamped to the wheels of a buggy or the like in order to convert the said buggy into a sleigh.
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim:
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a buggy with my device shown in. place. Fig. 2 is a plan elevation of my device shown removed from the buggy and without the clamp means. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clamp means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 indicates a buggy body which is mounted upon front wheels 2, and rear wheels 3 in the usual manner. My detachable sleigh runner includes a channeled member 4, which is provided with a curved portion 5 in front which fits the periphery of the front wheel 2. Back of the curved Portion 5, the channeled member 4 extends straight back beyond the rear wheel 3. A curved member 6 of channeled section is pivoted as at 7 to member 4, and fits the outer periphery of wheel 3. The free curved ends of members 5 and 6 are provided with holes through which bolts may be placed in order to secure the clamp means. The clamp means consist of forked yokes 8 which straddle the front and rear wheels 2 and 3 and are secured at their forked ends to the 'curved ends of members 5 and 6. The inner ends of forks 8 are connected by means of a turn buckle 9 in order that the forks may be drawn tight after the runners are in place beneath the wheels 2 and 3.
The convenience and necessity of converting a buggy into a sleigh is well known and applicant believes that he has discovered acheap and efiicient way of so converting a buggy. 1
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the class described the combination of a continuously channeled runner member having an upturned forward end which is curved to fit a front wheel, a continuously channeled and curved member pivoted within the first mentioned channeled member and adapted to fit the periphery of a rear wheel, clamping forks secured to the upper curved ends of each of the said channeled members and straddling the said wheels, and a turnbuckle clamp intermediate the said forks.
JOHN F. LOUGHRAN.
