N. H. HOLLAND.
PHONOGRAPH.
APPLICATION FILED Nov.27,191s."
1,272,262. Patented. July 9,1918.
I I y [3 6 Z] 7? NEWMAN H. HOLLAND, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO NEW JERSEY PATENT COMPANY, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PHONOGRAPH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 27, 1916. Serial No. 133,671.
' granted August 11, 1914, I show a phonographic memorandum device in which a straight edge extends across the face of a holder for a memorandum sheet, the straight edge and the holder being movable relatively to each other at. a speed corresponding with that of the phonograph recorder or reproducer across the record surface. A pencil is arranged to be drawn along the straight edge to mark the memorandum sheet to note the position on the phonograph record of any particular recorded matter to which attention is to be directed. In my present invention, I eliminate the use of a separate memorandum sheet and the holder therefor, the instructions and the parts of the record to which they apply being indicated by marks made upon the record tablet itself.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved device of the-character referred to. Other objects of my invention will appear more fully in the following specification and appended claims.
In order that my invention may be more clearly understood, attention is hereby directed to the drawing forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 represents, aside elevation of a phonograph embodying'one form of my 1nvention; i
a Fig, represents a front elevation thereof, parts 0 the phonograph being broken away; and l I,
Fig. 3 represents a plan View of a detail of the same.
In all the views, like parts are designated by the same referencecharacters.
The phonograph shown is of the Edison type and comprises the usual body A having a back rod 1 and a guide rod 2 on which the traveling carriage 3 is slidably mounted so as to permit the sound box 4, which is supported in the forward end of the carnage,
to travel-across the cylindrical tablet 5 carr1ed by the rotatable support 6.- The latter may be a collapsible mandrel constructed as shown in my United States Patent ,No. 1,167,500. The sound box herein shown is provided with a recording stylus 7 whereby the undulations corresponding to the sounds to be recorded are cut into the surface of the tablet 5. The support 6 may be rotated by a motor (not shown), as is common in the art. The sound box carriage may be fed along the record by feeding means comprising a rotatable feed screw 8 engaged by a feed nut 9 supported at the end of a spring 10 carried by the traveling carriage. An arm 11 projecting forwardly from the traveling carriage below the spring 10 carries a screw 12 hearing on the under side of the spring 10 to regulate the pressure of the feed nut 9 on the feed screw 8. The latter may be rotated from the phonograph mecha nism by means well known in the art. The carriage 3 is pivotally mounted on the back rod 1 so as to permit elevation thereof for the purpose of disengaging the stylus 7 from the surface of the record tablet 5 and at the same time to disengage the feed nut 9 from the feed screw 8. The device thus far specifically described is well known in the art, and per .96 forms no part of the present invention.
v At the forward end of the arm 11 on opposite sides thereof, levers 13 and 14 are pivotally supported as ,by means of pivot screws 15 and 16 threaded into the said arm. Each of these levers is provided with a substantially horizontal portion 17 extending under the record tablet 5 to the forward part of the machine and also with an upwardly extending portion 18 terminating in proximity to the record tablet. Springs 19 and 20 connected to the upwardly extending arms of the levers 13 and 14 respectively tend to hold the upper ends of said arms away from the record tablet and in engagement with stops, one ofwhich is shown at 21. The forward ends of the arms 17 are provided with buttons or finger pieces 22 and 23 respectively, whereby the levers l3 and 14 may be rotated against the action of the springs 19 and 20. Rotatably mounted on the upper end of each of the upwardly extending arms 18 of the said levers is a disk 24 of yielding material such as felt, rubber or the like. Because of the yielding char- Patented July 9, 1918.
acter of this material there is no danger of damaging the surface of the record tablet by the removal or displacement of record material or otherwise, or of damaging or obliterating the sound record impressions when the marker is brought into engagement with the tablet. These disks 24: may
be secured to the levers by means of screws 25 and they may be held in suitable spaced relation with respect to the levers by means of washers v26, one of which is placed between each disk and the corresponding lever. The upper end of each of the levers is provided with a rearwardly extending portion 27 formed with a claw like part 28 constituting a holder in which a pad 29 may be suitably held by friction or otherwise. The pads 29, one which may be the well known inking pads serve as means for holding a suitable coloring matter. The marking ink or other marking fluid should be=of different color from that of the tablet 5 so as to be readily discernible thereon. The rotatable disks are constantly in engagement with the pads, and when either of the levers is depressed to bring its disk in engagement with the record tablet, the tablet by its rotation causes the disk to be rotated and its periphery to be supplied with ink or other suitable marking fluid from the pad, whereupon the periphery of the disk causesa ring of the color of the marking fluid to be made around the tablet. Each of the rotatable disks is made comparatively thin so that a comparatively narrow line is made thereby upon the record tablet. The disks as shown are in alinement with each other and arein the same plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of the tablet support as the stylus 7; so that a mark made upon the tablet by either disk will indicate the exact position of the stylus along the tablet at the time the mark was made thereon. The pads may besupplied with ink or marking fluidof diflerent colors to indicate diflerent kinds of instructions, for example, the length of the letter, or that a correction is to be made in the letter at the place marked. The correction may be dictated upon the cylinder at the marked place. Fig. 3 shows in plan buttons or finger pieces 22 and 23 hearing the inscriptions Length, Correction, indicating that the button 23 is to be depressed to bring the marking device into operation for designating the beginning or the end of a letter, and that the button 22 is to be depressed to indicate the place where a correction is to be made in the letter.
In transcribing, the operator, because of the marks on the cylinder 5, has her attention called in advance to the lengths of the letters and to the places where corrections are to be made.
While I have shown only two'markers,
any desired number may be used for indicating different instructions. Various means other than those described may also be used for placing the desired. marks upon the record tablet. In short, my invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but includes all the modifications coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows 1. The combination of a rotatable support for a record tablet, a stylus'in operative relation thereto, said support and stylus be ing movable with respect to each other, and
means for marking the surface of a tablet carried by said support without damaging the same, said marking means being mount-- ed to automatically occup' different positions with respect to the tablet for difi'erent positions of said stylus with respect to the tablet, substantially as described.
