Description

UNITED NsTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
CHARLES n. EONDE, oEMo-BILE, ALABAMA.
DEEDGING-MACHINE.
spcification of Letters ratentNo. 12,720, dated April i7, 1855.
ToZZ whomz't may concern Beit known that I, CHS. H. FoNDii, of
`the city and county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented anew and usefulY l.Improvement on the Dredging-Machine of xFond andLyons, for which a patent was granted on the 21st of "March, 1854s; and I `dodeclare thatthe following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the: construction and operation of the same; reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of `this specification, in whichi Figure l, is a side view; Fig.` 2, a deck plan; Fig. 3, a transverse section.
The improvements here shown and set forth consist of three distinct devices.
'Ihe` first device has for `its object the keeping of the wheel always in gear with the `engine'while `it is raisingand lowering `and consists of the radius `bar marked A and the sliding carriage marked B, which carries the pinion shafts C.` The radius bar j connected with and worksupon the main shaft at D, Now itwill be seenthat if the excavating wheel `is raised the radius bar f will draw theWslidinglcarriageV upon the slides, E,`thus keeping the pinions `in gear withthe large coggedt'perimeter ofthe ex` cavating wheel notwithstanding the difference in their relative positions.
`The second` device consists of a latch whose pecuilar form and adjustment though `very simple `has a selftactiiig and double capacity not only for holding the `lid or bot- `tom of the bucket until it is struck by the tipper, but also of toppling over by lits own gravity and latching or taking hold of the lid again before thebucketagain enters the water, thereby dispensing withwthe use `of springs, this latch is marked, F.
Thejthird device has for its object the i i discharging of an excavating wheel laterally or over the side of the `boat, or ron both sides at once. Which has never before been done, and` consists o-f an `arrangement of two` chutes orsluice ways, Gr, Gr,.which form an `combination of the radius bar and the sliding carriage which carries the shafts of the pinions and also moves the miter wheels which slide on the feathered shafts, as this device and this combination of well known mechanical devices is my own invention and has enabled Ine to keep the excavating wheel always in gear with the engine and has neverbeen so applied before.
I claim as niy invention the self acting latch, F, in its particular form and inode of adjustment, it being so shaped and adjusted as to hold on to the lid of the bucket until it is struck by the tipper and so balanced :that by its own gravity it will fall over and flatch Qagain before the bucket enters the Awater this particular form and adjustment with the pin marked H doesaway with the necessity of springs `and is the result of `careful and expensive experiments.
.I also claim that' particular combina# vtion of chutes or sluice ways G, Gr, which form an apex under the discharging tipper and` pass athwartships on an incline toward the scows, which particular combination hasenabled'nie to discharge an excavat- .ing wheel laterally on either'or both sides.
