To all whom it may concern: I v
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. MoDoN- OUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of'VVa-yne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to combination locks for automobiles and its object is to provide a combination lock particularly adapted to be associated with a valve controlling the liquid fuel supply to the motor of the vehicle and with switches controlling the ignition and light circuit to lock said valve in closed position and said switches open, and thereby prevent starting of the motor of the vehicle by unauthorized persons.

In these views the reference character 1 designates the dash of a motor vehicle and 2 a valve in front of said dash controlling the flow of liquid fuel through a pipe3 and thence to the motor (not shown). The stem 4 of said valve projects rearwardly through the dash and into a recess 5 formed in the rear face thereof. Within said recess a looking pin 6 is passed transversely through the stem to restrain the same against forward displacement. Within said recess, at each side of the stem 4, there are also respectively located switches for controlling the light and ignition circuit, each of said switches comprising an actuating stem- 7 having a portion journaled in the dash, a contact arm 8 mounted upon the stem but insulated therefrom' and one or more fixed contact members 9 adapted to be engaged by the arm 8 in a certain rotative position of the stem 7. The ends of the stems 4 and 7 are transversely slotted as indicated at 10 to adapt them for engagement with other parts hereinafter described. To the rear of thedash there is attached a circular cover-plate 11 which overlies the recess 5 and through which the stems 7 slightly project, (see Fig. 8). At the center said plate is formed with an opening 12 to allow engagement with the' valve stem 4 of actuating means therefor carried'by the casing.
The casing 13 is of cylindrical form and is provided with an annular flange 14 adapted to bear upon the dash and to be attached thereto. Adjacent its front said casing is integrally formed with a transverse parti-' tion 15 producing front and back compartments 16 and .17 respectively, the latter of which is considerably'the larger. The'com partment 17 i'sclosed normally by a plate 18 secured by screws '19 to lugs 20 formed internally of the casing at opposite sides thereof. A sleeve comprising parts 21,22 and 23 is mounted centrally of the casing. It is to be noted that the members 31 and 32 may be freely rocked to establish any clesired control of the-ignitionand lightcircuits when thelocking member 28 is shifted from engagement with said members. -It is also to be observed'that manipulation of the member 35 servesnot only'to'shi-ft the member 28 to 'or from its locking position, but also throws the liquid supply valve 2 open or closed according as said locking member 28 is in operative or inoperative'position. By the provision' of a' plurality of apertures 51 in the rear face of the"dial' it becomes possible for a user'of thelock to readily change the combinatiom this sometimes being desirableto' prevent use of a car by a person to whom the old combination is known. After having removed the casing from the dash and loosened the screw 24, the dial maybe taken off and the pin 50 may be engaged in a different one of the apertures 51. By causing the pin 56 to engage and slightly rotate one of thecams 47 while the'mechanism is being unlocked said cam is shifted from its pawl-raising position so that a proper manipulation of the dial will be necessary to again raisethe pawls after the partshave been readjusted to looking position.
