Description
UNITED (STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN DRESSER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK,
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING CbMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,7 [6, dated April 17, 1855.
' nying lubricating compound.
The nature of my invention consists in making a lubricating compound which will run journals, cranks, axles, and other machinery in brass, composition, cast-iron, or wood boxes, or otherwise with algreat saving of oil, grease, or other material now in use.
To enable others to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe its com-- pound and uses.
I make my lubricating compound by melting one pound of tallow, and while hot add half a pound of sperm or other oil. Then add two pounds of pure pulverized or granulated lead, with which, in warmweather, use more tallow, and in cold weather more oil, to make it of a sufficient consistence to hold the lead in suspension when applied to the boxes, journals, or other parts of machinery.
The lead is prepared in the following manner: I melt the pig or bar lead, and pour it off until I get the dross and other impurities from it. Then I melt it in an iron vessel, and as it cools I. keep the lead at the sides thrown toward the center, so that it may cool equally, and with an iron stirring-rod I keep it briskly agitated until itgranulates. Then, when cool; 1 sift out the line particles, and so continue to melt and agitate until the whole is reduced to the aforesaid pulverized or granulated lead.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The lubricating compound and its application to journals, cranks, axles, and other machinery subject to friction, using for that purpose the aforesaid compound, or any other substantially the same, and which will pro duce the intended effect. 7
NATHAN DRESSER.
