FIRE-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED F. KRUMHCLZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, inth'e county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fire boxes and particularly to means for effectually consuming otherwise unburned products of combustion. I In the co-pending application of August Krumholz, Serial No. 208,666, filed December 24, 1917, there is disclosed a device similar to that shown herein, in which a pair of vertically disposed baflies are arranged transversely of the fire box in the front of the lines, the arrangement being such that products of combustion are caused to pass vertically downward between the two baffies or water cooled boxes and be projected into a highly heated zone. One of the,objections to this and similar, forms of smoke consuming devices is in that when located, as shown it is impossible to expose the entrance to the fines in order to clean the same as is required .for efficient transfer of heat.
An object of my invention is to so mount a device of this character that the same may readily be displaced fromits operative position to permit of cleaning the fiues all without the necessity for removing the .baf lies. The desired result is secured by mounting the baflies on alined pivots thepivots Ecting as the water connections forthe baf- One'of the novelfeatures of myjimprove ment is that of locating the packed joints within the water cooled boxes. In other words, providing means for surrounding the joint with water to avoid deterioration and burning out. This result is secured by providing recesses in communication with the water spaces, said recesses accommodating the socket in which the enlarged end of the water supply nipples is held by suitable packing in the form of a gland. Preferably the pivotal joint of the bafiles is located at a point one side of the center of the baflies, as in this manner the battles may be located closer to the fiues and still permit the water cooled part to be swung to expose the lines.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein,

Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through a fire box equipped in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the centerline of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view-taken on the line 33 of Fig. 4, and,
Fig. 4 is asectional view taken on the line 44- of Fig. 3.
In the drawings a fire box is shown associated with a boiler having side sheets 10,
and crown sheet 11. Flues 12, of the usual form, are provided. 7 j
Mounted within the fire box and extending transversely thereof are two. water cooled baflies 13, 14, vertically-arranged and spaced apart. The lower edge of the box 13, is adapted to lie at or below the surface of the fuel bed, the products of combustion arising from the fuel bed being caused to pass upwardly, thence downwardly between the two boxes and into the zone of highest heat where any unconsumed gases ,are burned. The bafilesllii, 14: are 'inter-connected at four points by'means ofthe pipes 15. Stay-bolts 16, will. be locatedv at proper points in the box to stiffen the same asrequired. Preferably the boxes are formed by welding the same when completed being in effect one piece- 5 1 In order to expose the ends of [the flues to permit of cleaning as required, I prefer to pivot the baflies in such manner as .toper mit of theirbeing swung,90. In order to accomplish this result I provide a trans; verse water conduit 17, fixed in the side sheets 10, and having a vertically upwardly projecting nipple 18, located at a point intermediate the ends of the conduit. The nipple is best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, preferably has an enlarged or spherical end 19, which is located in a cylindrical socket 20, formed within a recess 21, in communication with the box 13. It will be noted that there is awater space 22, around the socket 20, and therefore that the same cannot be burned out or the packing 23, destroyed. A gland nut 24:, serves to clamp the ball end 19, in a well known manner.
The pivot and water connection for the upper end of the box is similar. A nipple 25, projects downwardly from the crown sheet 11,in vertical alinement with the ni ple 18. It is held in a packed joint 26, which is duplicate of that described..- The the" circulating Water is forced'l to pass '28, secured b 1 bolts 29,
socket 27, is, however, formed in arece'ss 2m th b x 1 Thu i wil be see th w through both of the boxesan d cannot be trapped at any point therein. In order to close the space between the top of the box l :i? l 1- lQW sheen I P vide Helm to the box 14;, and bricks or asbestos blocksBO, are cemented in place on top of the box 14, and against, the plate -28. "It is obvious that-the forinof the pivotal conn'ectiommay be variedsomeivhat and much the same resultssecured. It is not essentialthat the precisedetails of construction; beffollowed either in the form of the lea-flies or the arrangement of tliewvater supply or circulating,f connections. Modifications -Wlll suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and such modifications I consider ivvithin the scope of my inven- 'I claim: I
