Description

R. A. GALLY.
PUMPEP. SPRING.
APPLICATION FILED IAN-7,1918.
1,271,458. Patented July 2, 1918.
ROBERT A. GALLY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BALDWIN COMPANY, OF
CINCINNATI, onto.
PUMBER-SIRING.
Application filed. January 7, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT A. GALLY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, "in the county of'I Iamilt on and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumper- Spring's, of which the following is a specification. i
' I'n'this applicants prior Patent 1,103,872, are shown horizontal pumper bellows hav ing their moving boards under side of said pumpers and an arm or extension rigidly attached to and rising above'its moving board and from the bearings at the top of pumper arms are connecting rods or pitmen connecting downwardly. No springs were there shown for holding up and returning the pumpers, the use of springs for the return action of pumpers being well known, as usually applied directly to the moving board, and such were first used with these pumpers, being suspended below the pumpers by suitable brackets, but such po sition of the springs when the pumpers were under side the main part of a horizontal grand piano, as then and now shown, were too conspicuous, and also in the way of a man when under the piano for inspecting or regulating the working parts, wherefore an improved disposition of the springs is now set forth for use with the extended arm type of pumper, being especially useful when such pumpers'are used adjacent the braces of a grand piano and their extended arms are between the braces.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a side view of a case of a grand piano having the side nearest the observer removed; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same case showing how the two arms and their springs are disposed adjacent the braces of'the piano, although the peculiar disposition of the springs with the extended arms of the pumpers may be used whether the piano is with or without braces, and evenwhen such pumpers and arms are used in other locations than piano cases and have these special spring devices, and also when such pumpers do not have their moving boards underneath them, or where the pumpers are not horizontal.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918 Serial no. 210,713.
The pumpers l have their moving boards 2 with arms 3 fixed with and extended from the moving ends of the said moving boards and toward and beyond their fixed boards 4:. Pitmen 3 or other connections are attached to the outer parts of the arms 3 to efiect the movement of the moving boards 2 of the pumpers 1. From the outer part of each arm 3'to the fixed board at or some fixed part attached with the fixed board 4, a spring 5 is connected to each arm 3 and so disposed as to pull each moving board2 toward its corresponding fixed board 4. A convenient form of spring is the ordinary leaf spring as 5 of the present showing, and this is very easily held in place by holes near the outer end of each leaf of the spring 5, and one of theseholes engaged on a pin 6 on the fixed board at or parttherewith such as the attaching rail 7, and the other hole on a pin 8 of an extension 9 on arm 3 of the moving board 2.
When pumpers with arms as 3 are placed under a grand piano or the like, with the arms 3 extending up within the main part ofsuch piano, the springs 5 are conveniently disposed adjacent to and in the same plane with the braceslo of the piano, as particularly well shown in Fig. 2, and when a brace as 10 is at an angle to the main dimension of the case the springs may be similarly slanted, and with more widely separated braces may stand between them.
Vlhat I claim as my invention is 1. A player piano including a bellows pumper having a fixed board and a moving board. and an arm fixed to and extending from the said moving board toward and be yond said fixed board, and a spring connected from an outer part ofsaid arm to a fixed part of the said player piano structure.
