Application filed. August 16, 1916. Serial No. 115,341.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVALD M. MATTSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inman, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Valve Mechanism for Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary valve mechanism for engines, the broad object in view being to provide in connection with a multiple cylinder engine, a combined-inlet and exhaust valve for each pair of adjacently located cylinders. In a four cylinder, four cycle engine, two of such valves will be used and be driven from any suitable part of the engine such as a shaft geared to the engine shaft.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a compression band mounting of the rotary valve which will prevent leakage of fresh charges or burned charges of-fuel and which will also prevent the drawing in of cold air during the operation of the valve mechanism and the subsequent delivery of said air to the combustion chambers of the cylinders.
A further object in view is to provide a valve and operating mechanism therefor which will operate silently, positively, which will admit of large valve openings an which will not have to be lifted or shifted to allow the exhaust or burned gases to escape.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement, herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.

i In carrying out the invention, for each two adjacent cylinders, I employ a combined intake and exhaust valve casing -1. Both of these valves casings commimicate at the top with an exhaust pipe 2 and at the bottom. with an intake pipe or manifold 3 extending from any suitable form of carbureter 4. I
Each of the valve chambers 1 is of cylin-L drical formation as shown and contains. a valve 5 which is both an intake and an exhaust valve, the body of the valve being formed with an L-shaped exhaust passage 6 which has an outlet port 7 in the top wall thereof and an inlet port 8 in the side or periphery thereof. Eachvalve body also comprises an inlet passage 9 having an inlet ort 10 in the bottom'of the valve and an outlet port 11 in the periphery of the valve body. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be observed that the outlet ports 7 of the exhaust passages 6 communicate with the exhaust pipe or manifold 2, while the inlet ports 10 of the valve communicatewith the intake manifold 3 at the bottom of the valve chambers. -Therefore'the fresh charges of mixture are admitted into the bottom of each valve chamber and valve and thenlaterally into the cylinders while the exhaustis emitted laterally from the cylinders into the valve chambers and valves, passing'out through the top of the valve and valve chamber into the exhaust manifold 2.

valves, a compression band 16 of the split variety, the same being divided transversely at the point 17. Projecting outwardlyfromthe band 16 are cylindrical tubular. nipples or extensions 18 adapted to fit into theengine ports in the cylinders, each of said tubular extensions 18 being formed witha groove or seat in which is placed a split expansible respect to each other packing ring 19 similar to the rings now in common use on the pistonsof combustion engines. Adjacent to the split 17 in the ring, one end ofthe latter is provided With a bridge piece20 secured to one end of the ring and over-lapping the other extremity of the ring and having connected to the free edge thereof a contractile spring 21 also attached to the body of the ring 16 and serving to contract the ring 16 in size causing it to closely fit around the periphery of the valve. The compression band 16 is held in fixed relation to the valve casing 1 by means of a suitable fastener 22 such as a bolt.
' From the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings it Will novv'be understood that each valve Works in conjunction With two cylinders and takes care of both the intake and the exhaust of both cylinders. The ports of each valve are of course so arranged and located With as to enable charges to be delivered at the proper periods to the cylinders and the exhaust gases liberated at the proper periods therefrom. The ex ansion ring prevents leakage of the resh charges as Well as the exhaust or burned gases and also excludes atmosphericair from the combustion chambers.
I claim:
1. The combination With a multiple cylinder engine having intake and exhaust ports, of a cylindrical valve casing common to adjacent cylinders and provided in its bottom face with an intake port and provided in its top face Withan exhaust port, a positively driven combined intake and exhaust valve rotatably mounted in said casing and provided With an inlet passage entering the bottom of the valve body and internal" opening through the periphery thereof and an exhaust passage entering through the periphery of'the valve body and opening out throughthe top thereof, and an expansion compression band interposed between the peripheryof the valve body and the inner Wall of the valve chamber, said band having projecting tubular nipples fitting into said cylinder ports, means for contracting said compression band around the body'of the valve, and a bolt extending from said band through a hole in the Wall of the valve casing to prevent rotation of. said band.
2. The combination with a multiple cylinder engine having intake and exhaust ports, of a cylindrical valve casing common to adjacent cylinders and provided in its bottom face With an intake port and provided in its top face With an exhaust port, a positively driven combined intake and exhaust valve rotatably mounted in said case ing and provided with an inlet passage entering the bottom of the valve body and opening through the periphery thereof and an exhaust passage entering through the periphery .of the valve body and opening out through the top thereof, and an expansion compression band interposed between the periphery of the valve body and the inner Wall of the valve chamber, said band having projecting tubular nipples fitting into said cylinder ports, means for contracting said compression band around the body of the valve and a bolt extending from said band through a hole in the Wall of the valve casing to prevent rotation of said band, and expansion packing rings surrounding said nipples.
