LEVER-HANDLE FOR SAFE-DOORS.
Specification or Itters Iatent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed October 10, 1917. Serial No. 195,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoLLIN C. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever- I-Iandles for Safe-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in lever handles for safe doors.
In a lever handle, strength is essential, and ornamental finish which will be durable and lasting is very desirable.
Lever handles have usually been made of cast metal. If durable metals which will impart an ornamental and finished appearance to the handle, like brass or bronze are used, the cost is considerable, while if the lever handle be made of cheaper metals such as iron or steel, the ornamental finish applied to the same will soon be marred by contact with the hand in the operation of the handle.
The object of this invention is to provide a lever handle that will be comparatively inexpensive, and which will combine strength with beauty of form and durability of finish, and it consists of an iron or steel core or spindle, the exposed portion of which is covered with bronze, brass or other ornamental metal or other substance which will be secure against corrosion, and a handle preferably of the same metal as the spindle covering, seated at one end within a depressed seat formed in the spindle covering and secured therein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the lever handle, Fig. 2 is a view in section through the same, and Fig. 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a modification.
3 represents a spindle, made of iron, steel or other'suitable inexpensive metal, adapted to be connected up at its inner end with the bolt works of a safe door. This spindle is preferably provided at a point between its ends with an integral collar or shoulder 4:,
and at its outer end with an enlargement 5,
. the portion between the enlargement and collar being preferably of less diameter than either, all that portion of the spindle from the shoulder 4 to its outer enlarged endconstituting the head of the spindle.
6 is the bronze, brass'or other ornamental covering, shaped to fit over the head, and then rolled and spun to closely embrace the head 5, collar 4, and the reduced and curved portion intermediate the two, the free edge of the ornamental covering or sheath being turned so as to overlap the rear face of the collar as shown in Fig. 2.
The covering 6 is'provided at one side of the head with a circular opening, and the head 5, with a depressed seat 7 to receive the inner end of the handle 8. This handle is made of sheet metal, of tubular form and is formed by rolling or any other approved method. Its inner end is adapted to be seated in the seat 7 formed in the head 5, and
is secured by the screw 9 which passes through the cap 11 closing the outer end of the handle, and into a threaded hole 10 formed in the head 5 of the spindle. The inner end of the handle 8 fits snugly within the circular opening in the spindle covering 6.
By the term sheet metal, I mean sheet metal proper, tubing or anything of a corresponding sort which can be properly shaped. It is also possible that this handle may be made of a composition such as rubber or other non-corrodible substance, and instead of securing the handle to the spindle by a screw passing. lengthwise the handle,
