Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. STOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ventilators and particularly to a ventilating equipment for moving vehicles, such as street railway cars and the like. V
The ventilating system of a street railway car usually consists of a series of external air intake members, a series of internal controlling members for regulating thepassage of the admitted air into the car, and a series of intermediateair conducting members.
The present invention relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of these intermediate air ducts, and contemplates an air duct which will be capable of easy installation between the outer. and
inner members and will positively prevent passage. of snow, water, and the like into the car. Prior tomy invention, these intermediate members have simply been permanently secured, by soldering or otherwise, to the outer members, and by reason of their inaccessible location it has been not only a matter of considerable difliculty to solder them in position, but when once soldered it has been practically impossible to remove them. Moreover, the form of the air ducts has been such as to actually direct water into the car instead of excluding it. e
In carrying out my invention, the external air inletmemloer is provided with a flange along one or more edges adapted to receive one or more edges of the intermediate conducting member and said conduct ing member is provided with one or more flanges adapted to receive opposite edges of the outer member. The whole provides a slidable interlocking structure which can be readily assembled and taken apart. The
delivery end of the conducting member is detachably fastened in any suitable manner as by screws or the like to the inner skin of the carin communicating relation to the interior air controlling shutters. The bottom wall of the air duct is sloped downwardly and outwardly so that any water which finds access thereto through the exterior member is directed downwardly and outwardly into said member.
The construction and operation of my device will be more fully, disclosed in the specification that follows.
In the drawings forming a part of that specification Ihave shown as an illustrative "embodiment a' form of ventilator which has been found satisfactory in use and welladapted to the requirements of manufacture.
Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are correspondingly applied, and in these drawings:

free edge of the wall 3 is turned over upon itself as indicated at 4 to provide it rolled edge. The opposite top wall and the end walls of the member 1 extend inwardly toward the interior of the car as flanges 5.
Secured to each flange 5 by solder or otherwise is a U-sha ed strip .6. Each strip 6 is bent over the reeedge of the flange 5 to provide a rolled edge '7. The strips 6 slidably receive the straight, 'unformed edges 8 of three sides of an intermediate air conducting member 9 disposed be tween the car wall 2 and the inner skin 10 of the car and secured at its inner flanged end 9 to the skin 10in any suitable manner as by the fastenings 11.
The fourth edge of the air duct 9 is formed for interlocking engagement with the wall 3 of the intake member 1 by turning said edge over. and back upon itself and then outwardly as indicated at 12. This provides a continuous recess in which the rolled edge 4 of the wall 3 is slidably received.
.The opposite end of the member 9 de livers to the air controlling members 13 secured to the skin 10 within the car by .the fastenings 11. These 'membe'rs'13 arepreferably shutters slidable one upon the other and operated by an actuating rod 1 1. I
The bottom wall of the member 9 is sloped downwardly and outwardly as shown. At its delivery'end the member 9 isdeflected laterally as indicated at 15 to enable it to be attached to the skin 10 without piercing said member.
The arrangementis-such that water or the like entering the member 9 through the member 1 'fiows down the downwardly inclinedbottom wall of the member 9 back into the m'emberl. This prevents ingress of the water into the car. v i
In assembling the device of the present invention, the members 9 and inner shutter 13 are secured to the skin 10 by means of the fastenings 11. The outer member 1 is then interlock'ngly engaged "with theouter end of the member 9 by means of the strips 6 and flange 12 which receive opposite edges of said members 1' and 9. The outer member 1 is then'secured to thewall 2 by suitable fastenings. This interlocking engagement of the members 1 and 9 therefore not only permits a ready assembling of the members but enables them to be disseminated easilyfor the purposeof repair or the like. It will be understood that the members 1, 9' and 13 are mounted inlongitudinal series along each side of the car. The specific constructions of themembers 1 and 13 forms no part of the present invention except in so far as they combine withthe intermediate member 9.
While I have shown the members 1 and 9 as each having one ormore locking devices for the reception of opposite edges of said members, it will be understood that if desired all the locking devices might be formed on one or the other of the members and the opposite member simply have straight unformed edges slidable into said devices.
Similarly, it will be evident that either membermay have. a greater or less number of Copies of this patent maybe obtained for locking devices than the number shown and that their arrangement may be varied.
These and various other modifications of my device may be resorted to, all without departing from the spirit of my invention, if within the limits of the appended claims.
WVhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A ventilator for a vehicle having a double wall consisting of an air intake member fastened to the outer member of the wall and having certain of its edges flanged and extending into the space between the members of the double wall, double folded strips secured to said flanges, and an air duct arranged in the space between said double wall and secured at its inner end to the inner member of'said double wall and having certain of its edges at its outer end unformed and adapted to slidingly fit in the recesses provided by the double folded devices of said intake member.
2. A ventilator for a vehicle having a double wall consisting of an air intake member adapted to be fastened to the outer member of the wall and having an unformed edge and flanged edges all extending into the space between the members of the double wall as flanges, double folded strips secured to said flanges, and an air duct arranged in the space between said double wall and secured atits inner end to the inner member of said double wall and having certain of its edges at its outer end unformed and adapted to slidingly fit in the recesses provided by the double folded devices of said intake member and having a single edge at said outer end bent back upon itself to receive said unformed edge of the intake member.
