To all whom it may concern: i U
Be it knownithat I, ADOLPH RUBIN, v a citizen of the United States residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, suchas will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same. I,
This invention relates to loose leaf binders of the type which comprise tapes, bands or cords arranged. in slots in the leaves and connected to a'winding shaft that is adapted to be turned in one direction to draw the tapes taut and-cause theleavesto be clamped securely together; by two cooper: at-ing leaf-clamping members, one ofwhich carries the winding shaft. a p j One object of my presentinvention is to provide a novel locking. mechanism for the winding shaft. i v Another, ob'ect is toprovide a novel means for securing the tapesto; one of the leaf-clamping members of the-binder.
And still another object is to provide a 7 novel means for connecting the covers of i the binder to the leaf-clamping members.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an end View of a loose leaf binder constructed 1n ac cordance with my lnvention.
'Fig. 2 is, a vertical sectional view of the i binder,,taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. j
' Fig. 3 i a horizontal-sectional view, taken on the line 3- -3 oof Fig. 2.;and. p i f,
Fig. f is a sectional View, taken on'the line 4:4@ of'Fig. 3, illustrating the con- I struction of the clips that are used for connecting the ends of the tapes to one of the leaf-clamping members.-
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A and A designate two leaf-clamping members between which the rear edge portions of the leaves B are arranged, C designates tapes, bands or cord of flexible material that pass through slots in said leaves and in said leaf-clamping members and D designates a winding shaft to'which one end of the tapes C are connected, the opposite ends of said tapes being connected to a flange l on the leaf-clamping member A and said winding shaft being provided at one end with a finger piece D by which it'can be turned. 7
v Specification'of Lettersl atent. P t nted J fly 2, 19 13;" f Applicationflled April is, 1917. Seth-1210162524. v i I Thewinding shaft D is rotatably mounted in a hearing or bearings 1' ontheleafclamping member A andwa. locking means of novelconstruction is provided for 'pre Venting the Winding shaft from turningin a direction toslacken the. tapes after; said tapes have been tightened; Said means.- conslsts of a ratchet wheel 2 securely con-.
nected to the winding shaft and arranged v the spring 3 is; a laterally-projecting:arm
5'. provided with an extension 6 and at the opposite end of said spring is a laterally projecting arm .5? provided with; an exten: sion 6*. The extension 6 of the arm at the lower end of the torsion spring cooperates with theratchet. wheel 2, and theexterrsion 6f of the arm at the upper end of saidtorsion spring projects into the-upper end, of
a tubular-shaped part 7 on the leaf-clamping member A. A winding shaft locking mechanism of the construction .abofve jde scribed can be manufactured at a. low cost; it will not wear out quickly on accountpf the fact that the spring. of same is a torsion.
spring that will retain its, resiliency even after long continuous use, and still another desirable feature of such a lockingfmecha-Q nism is that the spring of same is of such a character that it effectivelypreventslthe shaft from being turned in one direction and still does not ofler considerable resistance to the shaft when it is being turned in a direction to tighten the tapes, thereby enabling the winding shaft to be manipulated easily. i
The covers E of the binder are connected to the leaf-clamping members by flexible hinges, each of which is formed from a piece of fabric, leather or other pliable material 8 connected at one edge to its cooperating cover and having its opposite edge portion arranged in the tubular-shaped portion 7 on the leaf-clamping member with which it cooperates. The edge portion of the flexible hinge member 8 that is connected to the leafclamping member is preferably provided ,tion 7, previously referred to;
with a 'bead that is snugly surrounded by the tubular-shaped portion 7 on the leafclamplng member. One convenlent and 1nexpensive way of connecting the hinge members 8 to the leaf-clamping members is to form a bead on the edge'portion ofeach 0t said hinge members by means of a piece of.
can be manufactured at a low cost, and
there is little liability of its being acciden tally detached from the leaf-clamping member to which it secured, owing to the fact that; it is'pr'ovided at one edge with a' bead that is completely surround'edby a portion on the least-clamping member that is bent oversamei 1 Thetape's'C are connected' to the flange I on the leaf clamping member A by means of clips 10, as shown in'Fig; 3, each of which consists of a substantially U-shapecl member, formed from sheet metal, that is slipped over the end portion of the tape after the tape has been lapped over or wra ed around the flan e 1 as shownin Fig. 3. Said clips '10 are connected to the flange- 1, preferably by pressing portions II of each clip into holes 1 2 in the flange, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby producing aneflicient' and inexpensive means for securing the tapes to the leaf-clamping member A ofthebinder. it
Having thus described my invention, what I claim; and desire tose'cu'reby Letters Pat'- ent, is: 1 loose leaf binder of the type dc scribed pl'ovided with a winding shaft,"'aleaf-clamping member on which said? shaft: is"rotata'bly mounted, a toothed portioir on said'shaft, and a torsion spring on-said leaf clamping member that cooperates with said toothed portion; to prevent the winding shaft from being turned in one direction.
2., A looseleaf binder of the type described provided with a winding shaft, "a leaf-clamping member on which said winding shaft is rotatably mounted, a ratchet said shaft, a torsion spring arranged in:bear-'-- ings on said leaf clamping member and extending the entire length of same, a laterally projecting arm at one end of said spring provided with an extension that cooperates with said ratchet; wheel; and a laterallyprojecting arm at the opposite end of said' spring provided with an extension that fits in an opening'iirsaid letIf' ClillnPlHg' member;
4. A loose leaf binder, comprising leafclamping members,tapes or hands that pass through slots-in the leaves, a flange on one of said leaf-clamping membersyand clips secured to said flange and arranged so that they embraceportions of'said tapestha-t are wrapped around said flange;
5.A l'o'os'e' leaf binder; comprising leafclampingmembers, one of which is provided with a flange, tapes or bands that pass through slots in t he'l'eavesand through slots in said leaf cl'ampingmembers, one" end 0t each of said tapesbeing lapped over said flange,'andsubstantially U shaped clips arranged over theportionsof the tapes that lap over said flange and secured to said flange by portions on said clips thatare pressed mto holes nr saidflange;
