EDWARD rasoir, or New YORK, N. Y.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
, To aZZ 'whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD Lnsorr, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and` zuseful Improvements in CollarButtons, of which the following is a specification.k
AThis invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in collar buttons and has for its primary object the provision of a l button -which may bey readilyk secured in positionand securely held in placer after being passed through collar.
Anotherv object of the invention resides in the provision of a button of the above stated character which may bereadily .placed in position without injury to the shirt-band or collar and which will be formed of the onv the forward end of the shank 1. i As the minimum number of parts of simple con.V struction.
yA further object ofthe invention resides in the provision of a button of the above stated character which will be constructed in such manner that the button maybe readily assembled, will be highly eiiicient in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
vWith these and other objects in view, as will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of coperating elements as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings. l
In the drawings forminga part of this application and in which similar reference charactersl designate corresponding parts through the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved form of button in use,
Fig. 2' is an enlarged sectional view through the same,
Fig. 3 is a plane ofline 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the button is passed through the button hole. l
Referring more particularly to the drawings., l designates thek which is inclosed by a sleeve 2 which has a liange 3 formed upon its inner end and provided with a'radial inwardly directed slot A,
the parallel opposed walls 5 of the slot if being beveled on their upper faces. kThis Specification of Letters Patent. Application med september 11V, 1917. seriai No. 190,815.
the shirt-band and Y detail transverse section on ther shank of the button,
Patented July y2, i918,
will make it possible to readily thread the flange 3 through the button hole. ,The "y y flange 3 hask a central opening 6 through which the shank l. extends, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will also be seen. by referring to this iigurethat they outer end y"i of the sleeve 2 is rolled back to receive the turned backedge 8 of the separatev head 9, which latter forms the end ofthe button.
Y Y The shank l is insertedin the sleeve Zand passed through the opening 6 before the head1? is placed in position. 'Ihe reduced rear end 10 of the shank lis passed through `a back plate 11y and then riveted to the same,
asshown at 412. A suitable spring l13l is engaged around the shank" l within the sleeve 2 and has one end bearing against. the flange 3 within said sleevc2, while its opposite end bears against a iiange Vorcollary 14 mounted spring 13is under tension, the back plate 11 will be drawn toward the flange 3.
In use, the head 9 and sleeve 2 are forced f through the button hole and the button then turned to engage one of the beveled walls 5 with the button hole, wherebyy further rotay tion 0f the button will cause the wall to ypass through the button hole, as shown in Fig. A and as the button continues to rotate, the entire flange 3 will be drawn through until the flange 3 rests upon one side of the materialV through which the button hole is formed and the back plate 1l engages the opposite face, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3k of the drawings. The spring 13 will cause the flange 3 and back plate l1 to securely grip f therebetween the material and thereby hold the button securely in Vproper position. VIt will be obvious that vthev button may be passed in this manner through a number of button holes to secure togetheroverlapped portions of a shirt-band or collar.
While the preferred embodiment of' the invention has been shown and described, it
,will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim 'i l. A collar button comprisinga shank, a back Yplate carriedby saidV shank, an inclosing member-for said shank, said inclosing member having aflange, and means engaged around said shanky within said inclosing member to cause the flange of said inelosing member and said back plate to grip a member through Which the button is engaged.
2. A collar button comprising a shank, a back' vplate Carried by said shank, a sleeve surrounding said shank and Carrying a radially slotted flange adapted to be threaded through a button hole through Whiohothe sleeve is engaged, a button head mounted on Jsaid sleeve, fand means for drawing together said back plate and said flange of the sleeve.
3.A Collar button comprising a shank, a back plateon said shank, a button hole entering member surrounding said shank, a slotted member Carried by and forming a part of said button hole entering member, saidV slotted member being adapted to be threaded through the' button hole by rotation of the button hole entering member, means for causing said slotted member and saidvbaek plate to' grip opposite faceslof the material through which the button hole is formed, and a head for said button.
f 4:. A collar 'button comprising a sleeve having a flange formed at one end and its opposite end rolled back, said flange having an inwardly directed radial slot with bevele Walls Yto permit threading of the flange through a button hole upon rotation of the f sleeve, a back plate for cooperation with the flange to hold the button in position, means for forming resilient connections between said back plate and said lange, and a head mounted on the turned back end ofsleeve having a ilange formed on one end,
and meansfor forming a connection between said sleeve 'and said shank to Cause the flange and the back plate to resiliently grip a member positioned between the same.
