Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January A, 1918. Serial No. 210,282.
Y and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to clothes wringers of the type wherein the pressure mechanism is provided with an emergency release whereby the pressure of the .wringer rolls may be instantaneously released in case of accident.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and reliable fastening means, and latch operated means for such emergency release mechanism. The features of my invention are hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out and are illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which:

In these drawings A Aare the end posts 7 of the wring'er frame, having the usual slotted or bifurcated upper ends a a of ordinary construction, between which bifurcated ends a a the. journals of the wringer rolls B B, and the pressure springs b b are placed.
Resting upon the upper ends of the pressure springs b b are guide irons b b which are connected by means of a board or bar B the irons b b beingprovided with projections 6 which extend into the springs h h and serve to hold the upper ends of said springs in the vertical position.
The upper. ends of the bifurcated parts a a of the end posts A A are secured or connected together by means of plates C-E; the plate C extending across the ends as shown in Fig. 3, and being secured to the parts a a by means of screws 0 c-extending through the upper corners of the plate 0 and into the posts a a so that the upper ends of said posts cannot spread apart. The
lower corners of the plate C are provided with extensions 0 which project from the ends of the plate C and are bent around the sides of the posts A A at right angles to the plane of the plate 0; said extensions being long enough that, when bent as above described, leave the ends of said extensions in spaced relation to the opposite side faces of the posts an, as shown in Figs. 1 and. 3.

(Z of which are inserted between the side surfaces of the posts a a C in which position said latch is secured by means of screws 0? which passes through the ears 0' and the ends at of the latch D and into the posts a a the latch D thus being pivoted on the screws 0 may be swung laterally as shown by broken lines in Fig. 1.
The upper ends of the posts a a at the right hand upper corner of the wringer are connected together by means of a plate E (see Figs.'1, Aand 5) which is secured to said posts by means of'screws e e the lower corner of said plate E being provided with ears or extensions 6 which are bent around at right angles to said plate E and are secured to said posts a; a by means of screws a. To place the bar in position in the wringer frame as shown by full lines in Fig. 1, the latch D is moved laterally as shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, then the bar F is inserted into the frame with the initial end thereof under the flange E of the plate E as shown in Figs. 1 and 5; then the opposite end is dropped down between the posts 'a a behind the plate-G and the latch 1) moved back into place as shown by full lines in Fig. 1, after which the adjusting screws F, may be screwed down as may be desired.
In case of accident the pressure on the springs b b may be instantly released by striking a blow downwardly upon the conyexed spring member F which causes the plate f to slide longitudinally on the bar F, and push the latch D sidewise, thereby permitting the left hand end of the bar F to move upwardly as indicated in Fig. 1, which releases all pressure on said springs b' I). These fastening plates CE provide a strong and secure latch mechanism for the bar F and do not extend beyond the sides of the end posts A A sufliciently to be objectionable.
There is another feature of my invention which is of advantage in crating and shipping the wringers, vizt-The screws F in the bar F are always removed therefrom when the wringers are crated so that when a wringer having my improvements thereon is crated, I can first removethe screws F, and then insert the bar F with the spring member F thereon into place in the wringer frame wrong side up, so that the spring member F will be underneath the bar F and there will be nothing extending above the bar F, which is a very desirable feature in packing wringers for shipment. The flange E" is cut away as indicated at E in Fig. 5,
so as to permit the iron I) and pressure spring I) to be raised upwardly out of the end posts at the right hand of the frame, when desired.
After thus fully describing my invention .so as to enable others to construct and utilize end of said movable top-bar in place, a U
shaped latch member pivotedto said frame adapted to overlap the opposite end of said movable top-bar and retain it in place, a slidable plate secured on the upper surface of said movable top-bar adapted to engage said U-shaped latch member, a hinge member secured to the inner end of said slidable plate, a hinge member secured to the upper side of said movable top-bar adjacent to the opposite end thereof, and a convexed spring member secured to the inner free ends of said hinge members, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, a wringer frame end-post, a U-shaped latch, the arms of which extend downwardly along the front and rear faces of said end-post, a plate secured across the upper end face of said end-post, ears on the lower. corners of said plate bent so as to overlap outside the lower ends of the arms of said U-shaped latch so as to form a stop for said latch, screws passing through said ears and the lower'ends of'the arms of said U-shaped latch, and into the front and rear faces of said end-post, substantially as set forth.
