To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM S. GRAHAMM a citizen of the United States, and a r dent of Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lister-Flows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to improvements in lister-plows and has for its object to provide means capableof being readily applied to an ordinary plow of that character Whereby the machine is more perfectly adapted for the operation of double listing. By double listing is meant, the bursting out of previously formed ridges. between successive furrows that are spaced the usual distance apart, and forming in place of such, ridges additional furrows or trenches for the reception of additional rows of seed. Such double listing is becoming increasingly popular as its advantages are recognized. Such advantages are that the ground is, of course, more thoroughly plowed; is put in better shape for cultivating; absorbs excessive moisture better; the deposited seed is not so liable to be washed out, and the roots of the plants are given a better chanceto extend themselves all of which results in a larger yield. While these various advantages are quite generally recognized the operation of double listing is frequently not resorted to owing to the difficulty of properly forming the additional furrows or trenches midway of adjacent furrows or trenches that have been formed the distance apart that is customary in ordinary single listing. That the difficulty is a very considerable one will be appreciated when it is borne in mind that the earth thrown upon these spaces intermediate of the first formed set of furrows is loose, ridge-like and considerable in quantity. Hence, the making of the desiredfurrows or trenches in such spaces necessitates skill and extreme care on the part of the operator of the machine in driving his horses, and that, too, even where one of the first-made furrows is utilized, as is generally the case, as a guiding track for one of the supporting Wheels of the machine to run in.

listeras machines of the general type shown 1n the accompanying drawings are generally termed-with means for efi'ec- .tively holding the plow-body'in a central position with respect to the intermediate ridged strip of ground being plowed. Such guiding and holdmg means and the manner of their adjustable and detachable connection with the machine are illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter particularly described. That which ll believe to be new will be pointed out in the claims.

Through suitable means said cra lever 26, through the operation of which the supportm wheels can be given the deslred relative a justment to maintain the frame substantially horizontal when one of the supporting wheels runs in a furrow while the other runs upon unplowed ground. The means referred to, as well as the other parts so far referred to by reference numerals,

as by themselves they form no part of my present invention, and indeed, so far as my present invention is concerned may be quite widely varied from. For a detailed description of the construction and operation of all such parts reference is here made to Letters Patent No. 1,249,067, granted on the fourth day of December, 1917, upon an application filed byme. As in said patent, the turning of the plow-bail 18 to raise and lowerthe plow-body is eife'ctedthrough a hand-lever,
here indicated by the numeral 27.
Turning now to those features which the resent invention particularly relates to,-28 indicates. a bracket that comprises, in the construction shown, .a horizontal arm 29, a
vertical arm 30, and a diagonal brace member 31 extending between said arms 29 and 30-said bracket parts being preferably formed integral with each other, as shown. Against the face of the vertical arm 30, and preferably in a shallow recess formed therein as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, rests the upper end of a guiding device'in the form of a runner 32 which is firmly held to the bracket by bolts 33 as shown, or otherwise. As shown, this runner is curved rearwardly and it is beveled as at 34 to provide a comparatively sharp or cutting edge alon its lower margin, the purpose of which wi be hereinafter described. There are two of these guide-runners and attaching brackets,
one for each side of the machine, and each is securedin place by exactly the samemeans. Such means comprise a bracket 28 for attachment to one of the axle members 25 and a link for connecting the bracket to one end of the plow-bail 18. Referring to the bracket therefor.
s are connected with an operating connection to its axle member, it will be noted that at one end, and substantially in line with the vertical arm 30, rise two short walls 35 between which the axle member extends. These walls'form a support for a block 36 that is suitably shaped to partially surround the axle and constitute a hearing The block is removably held in place by a bolt passed through one of the walls 35 as shown in Fig. 3, and also b inwardly-turned flanges at the upper en 5 of said walls. By removing the bolt the bearing block can be moved laterally to disengage it from the retaining walls.- The upper face of the member 29 of the bracket is to be curved to fit the axle-member and thus form an extended and properly-shaped bearing between the bracket and its axle member. At the outer end of the bracket and on its under face is provided a semi-circular rib 37. 38 indicates a block roperly curved to fit against the axle mem er 25 and located adjacent to the inner end of the bracket. This block is provided with a lateral extension or flange 38 that is so shaped as to provide a groove or channel adapted to receive the said rib 37. 39 indicates a shackle passing over the axle member 25 and having its ends passed through opposite ends of the said block 38; By means of nuts 40 screwed tightly on the screw-threaded ends of the shackle the block 38 can be securel clamped to the axle member and,.while per ectly supporting one end of the bracket in place and holding it against movement longitudinally of the axle by reason of the enga gemcnt with the rib 37, yet permit a free swing of the bracket on the axle when the guide-runner is adjusted as hereinafter described.
The bracket-attaching link hereinbefore referredto is indicated by 41. It is connected to the bracket by having its lower end turned to loosely enter a hole 42 in an car 43 formed on the rear edge of the bracket and near the lower end thereof. From the bracket the link extends upwardly and to the rear and its upper end is screw-threaded and engaged in a screw-threaded head 44 from one face of which projects a cylindrical laterally-extending stud 45. 46 indicates a lock-nut on the link for holding it in any desired position with respect to said head 44. 47 indicates a short crank secured by a set-screw, or otherwise, to an end portion of the plow-bail 18, and through an opening in the end of the crank projects the cylindrical stud 45, it being held in place by a cotter-pin as shown in Fig. 1, or in any other suitable manner.

The links can be placed so that their turned ends enter the eyes from either side of the ears 4E3,Fig. 1 showing them entering from one side and Fig. 5 from the other side. Being able to attach them in eitherpne of these two positions facilitates adyustlng the brackets along their respective axle members to bring the runners to correct position in relation to the Walls of the furrows or trenches. As no great range ofadjustability of the runners is required owing to the quite uniform distance apart that prevails in the making of furrows or trenches in lister plowing, the adjustment that can be had by connecting the links to the brackets in one or the other of these two ways is ordinarily all the provision that need be made therefor, but if a little further adjustment should be required it can be had by shiftlng the cranks nearer to or farther from the ends of the plow-bail, as will be understood.

Thus, it will be seen, at each raising or lowering of the plow-body the guiding and guarding fenders will likewise be moved automatically. By my invention l provide means that can and easily attached to an ordinary plow o the type mentioned without so) changing or disturbing any of the parts thereof as to interfere with its working in the making of single listing furrows or trenches and that when applied will greatly lessen the labor and dificulties attendant upon double listing. While it have shown and described my invention in connection with a particular style of lister low it is of course understood that it is capable of application to other styles or makes of lister plows.
What claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. ][n a lister-plow, the combination with a frame, axle members attached wheels on said axle members, a plow-body, a rock-shaft journaled in the frame in rear of said axle members, and means for turning said shaft to raise and lower the plowbod of a guiding device located between said wheels and connected with said shaft and movable with the plow-body when said shaft is rocked, the parts being positioned relative to each'other so that one of said wheels will travel in one furrow and the guiding device in another furrow while the plow-body is making still another furrow.

In a lister-plow, the combination with a wheeled frame, a plow-body, a rock-shaft journaled in the frame, with which rockshaft theplow-body is connected, and means for turning said shaft to raise and lower the plow-body, ofa guiding device pivotally attached at its upper end to a suitable support and projecting rearwardly, and means connecting said guiding, device to said rock- .shaft whereby such device will be movable with th plow-body when said shaft is rocked, the parts being so positioned relative .to'each other that one of the wheels will travel in one furrow and the guidin device in another furrow while the plowody is makin still another furrow.

In a, lister-plow, the combination with a frame, axle members thereon, supporting wheels on said axle members, a ba l, and a plow-body connected therewith, of two guiding devices supported respectively on said axle members at opposite sides of the longiding delister-plow, the combination with-- tudinal. center of the frame, a connection. between each guidin device andthe plowbail, each of said guiding devices being positioned to run in a furrow at one side of the furrow being made by the plow-body, and means for simultaneously raising and lowgring theplow-body and the two guiding evices.

In a lister-plow, the combination with a frame, axle members thereon, supporting wheels on said axle members, a bail, and a plow-body connected therewith, of two guiding devices supported respectively on said tudinal center of t 1e frame, a connection between each guiding device and the plowball, each of said guiding devices being independently adjustable laterally of the frame to bring it in position to run in a furrow at one side of the furrow being made by the plow-body, and means for simultaneously raising and lowering the plow-body and the-two guiding devices.
9. In a lister-plow, the combination with a wheeled frame, a plow-body connected therewith, and a transverse shaft sup orted thereby, of a bracket pivotally attac ed to said shaft, a plow-body guiding device attached to and depending from said bracket, said guiding device being positioned to run in a furrow at one side of the furrow being made by the plow-body, a link connected to said bracket and also connected with the frame whereby said bracket is held against turning on the said shaft.

In a lister-plow, the combination with a wheeled frame, a plow-bbdy connected therewith, and a transverse shaft supported thereby, of a bracket ivotally attached to said shaft, a plow-b0 y. guiding device attached to and depending from said bracket, said iding device being positioned to run in a ow at one side of the furrow being, made by the plow-body, a movable member carried by the frame, a link connected to said bracket and also to said movable member, means for moving the said member and link to cause a turning of the bracket, and means for locking said parts against movement.-

In a lister-plow, the combination with a wheeled frame, a plow-body connected therewith, and a transversely-arranged shaft supported thereby, of a bracket journaled axle members at o posite sides of the longiupon and depending from said shaft,-said bracket comprising a horizontal arm that ,lies parallel with the shaft, a vertical depending arm and two separated walls that pgrtially surround the shaft for retaining a device to run in a furrow at one side of the fee net/ ear furrow being made by the plow-body, and means for rotatably holding said bracket on said shaft.
12. in a lister-plow, the combination with a wheeled frame, a plow-body connected therewith, and a transversely-arranged shaft supported thereby, of a bracket journaled upon and depending from saidshaft,said bracket comprising a horizontal arm that lies parallel with the shaft having near one end and on its outer face a semicircular rib and near its other end means for connecting with the shaft, and a depending ar1na block having a groove in which the rib on the horizontal arm of the bracket fits, means for clamping the said block to the shaft, a plowbody guiding device carried by the bracket, said bracket being positioned on the shaft to cause said guidlng device to run in a furrow at one side of the furrow being made by the plow-body, and means for rotatably holding said bracket on said shaft.

In a lister-plow, the combination with a wheeled frame comprising two side bars spaced a distance apart, of a rock-shaft having its end portions journaled in said side bars and having a crank at one of its ends, a plow-body connected to an intermediate portion of said rock-shaft, a guiding device pivotally secured in place at its upper end and located at one side of the machine so as to travel in a previously-formed furrow, a connection between said crank and said guiding device, and means for rocking said shaft to cause a simultaneous raising of the plowbody and guiding device.

In a lister-plow, the combination with a plow-body, and a rock-shaft with which said plow-body is connected, of a gulding device pivotally secured in place at its up: per end and located at one side of themachine so as to travel in a previously-formed furrow, a crank on said rock-shaft, a link having a detachable connection with said guiding device and an adjustable connection with said crank, and means for rochng said shaft to cause a simultaneous raising of the plow-body and guiding device.
