UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH RABEB, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 BURROUGHS ADDING MACHINE COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
ADDING-MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent.
Application flied May 20, 1912. Serial No. 698,568.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn RABER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and Stfie of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to power-driven machines and is hereinafter described in connection with adding machines driven by an electric motor, though it may obviously be employed with other forms of motors. The purpose of the invention is to automatically Shut off the power when the adding machine is not being used. Thus, if the motor of a machine provided with my improvement is set in operation and the machine not used. or when the use of the machine is discontinued after it has'performed its ,work, the motor is automatically brought to rest after a definite time has elapsed since the last In the specific form of the device herein shown and described in which the driving device is an electric motor, the switch controlling the su ply of current thereto is automatically s ifted by my device to open the circuit of the motor. If, however, any other form of motor be employed for driving the adding machine, the same timing mechanism may be employed to shut off the sup ply of motive fluid. Or, if the power is derived from a source which drives 'other mechanisms my device may be employed to shift. a clutch to disconnect from the source of power in a manner which will be obvious to any'mechanic.
The invention by which the above result is accomplished consists in certain novel features ofconstruction and combination of parts, the essential elements whereof are recited in the appended claims, and a preferred form of embodiment of which is dcscribed in detail hereinafter and 'fully illustrated in the accompanyin drawings forming a part-of this speci cation. Of said drawings, Figure 1 represents in side clevation so much of an adding machine as is necessary to an understanding of my invention with a driving electric motor attached thereto, to which my device is applied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale similar to Fig. 1, but showing a portion only of the same features of conto close the struction, parts being removed 'orshown in Patented July 2, 1918.

n and described in g chine proper is shown at 7 as mounted-upon a suitable base 8, to the under side "of which is secured a casting 9 which, supports a drivin motor 10, power tro ling mechanism inclosed ina casingll and timing mechanism for automatically opening the circuit of the closed in a housing 12. The motor may be transmitting and .con-
electric motor, -inll. shown being those of an well-known orapproved type and is supplied with power current through a conductor 13 connected to a switch box 1% con taining a switch of a suitable type and well-y known form, being shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, as a knife switch. supplying current through the switch to the motor is shown at 15, Fig l. The knife 16 of the switch is pivoted at 17, (as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1), normally held'in open position by a Ispring lS, and depressed circuit bya push button or rod 19. The latter slides vertically in a hffustoo The main ation is to be lease. t
ing 20, and is provided with annular shoulders 21 and 22, with which a catch 23 en gages through an opening 24 in the housing, the catch being pivoted at 25 to lugs upon the switch housing, and having an integral arm 26 which is connected to the automatic timing mechanism in a manner which will appear later. The armature shaft 27 of the motor extends through the casing 11 and carries a worm 28 therein which meshes with the worm wheel 29, loosely mounted upon a shaft 2, which, through an arm 30 thereon, a link 31 and an arm 32 on the rock shaft 100 of the adding machine proper oscillates the latter in the manner set forth in the Vincent atent above referred to. When an oscilven to the shaft 100, the worm wheel 29 1s clutched to shaft 2 by a mechanism which is fully described in said Vincent atent but which need be only briefly re erred to here. A ring 4 is fixedly mounted upon the side of the worm wheel 29 and provided on its exterior periphery with acontinuous series of semi-cylindrical transverse grooves 4 (see Fig. 4). A disk 6 is ri 'dly mounted upon the shaft 2 and provi ed with a flange 6" which overhangs the ring 4 and carries at one point an interlocking semi-cylindrical key or clutch member 5, which is journaled for oscillation in the disk, and provided at its outer end with a mutilated or partial ear 5". Upon the hub of the disk 6 is revo ubly mounted an arm 5 whose hub is formed with a series of teeth engaging the gear 5", the arm being urged by a spring 5, shown in said Vincent patent, in a direction to turn the key into engagement with one of the grooves of the ring above referred to. At its outer end the arm projects beyond the periphery of the disk and passes or comes into contact with a semi-cylindrical stop 5 accordin to the osition occupied by the latter. he stop is mounted pen a journal 5' which is partially rotated to bring the stop into or out of the path of the arm by means which will be hereafter described. t will be apparent that when the stop is turned out of the path of the end of the arm, the latter, under the influence of a spring and by reason of the enga ement of the teeth thereon with the muti ated gear 5" will revolve the key 5 into one of the notches or grooves upon the ring 4 attached to the constantly rotating worm wheel, and the parts being thus keyed together the shaft 2 will be given a complete rotation which will be terminated by the arm 5" again comin in'contact with the stop 5- if the latter has een turned into its path, w ereby the key will be given a partial rotation against the tension of its spring to ree ring 4. Each time, therefore, that the stop is turned out of the path of the arm the shaft 100 is given a complete oscillation. All this construction is ully set out in the Vincent patent above referred to which may be consulted for a fuller explana tion thereof.
Before proceeding to a detailed description of the specific embodiment of my invention disclosed in the accompanying drawings, I will give a brief outline of the general nature of operation thereof as applied to the above described machine. The switch is, as above stated, provided with a catch which maintains it in closed position after it has been de ressed to start the motor. A trip is provi ed, however, to release the catch a definite period after each manipulation of the machine. If, however, a second manipulation or a series of manipulation takes place within the period the latter is correspondingly extended so that as long as,
the manipulations occur with the required frequency the switch remains closed. For this purpose the trip for operating the catch is, during the operation of the machine, nor mally maintained in retracted or inoperative position by a dog which is partially under the control of the clutch actuating means or any other manipulative art of the machine and otherwise controlle by a disk which is continuously turned by the motor when the latter is in operation. The timing disk periodically throws the dog out of engagement with the tripping device or hammer and into engagement wit a detent. The releaseof the trip from the dog, however, does not immediately effect the operation of the catch but it is prevented from o erating by being held for a definite perio from its release from the dog by the timing disk itself which only permits the operation of the trip at a definite point in its revolution. The detent referred to above is, however, actuated to release the dog every time the manipulative part of the mach'ne is actuated and when so released the dog 18 again in position to' enage the trip and prevent its operation during the time when the timing disk is in positlon to permit the same. Thus so long as the manipulative part is actuated within the predetermined period the trip is prevented from moving the catch to release the switch, but if the said period is exceeded without a manipuation of the machine the trip en-' gages the catch and stops the machine. Beyond the worm 28 the armature shaft is spliced at 33, extended through the wall of the casingll and provided with'a second worm 34 (see Fig. 3) which meshes with a worm wheel 35 mounted upon a counter shaft 36. The latter also carries a worm 37 which engages a worm wheel 38 u on the timing shaft 39 in housing 12 (see Figs. 1, 2 and 7). By reason of this train of reducing gear the time shaft turns at a very low speed when compared with the speed of the shaft 2, by which the rock shaft of the adding machine is operated. Upon the timing shaft is fixed A disk which is generally circular in out I line, but indented or notched at 41 and provided with a cam surface at 42 which will appear later:

The hammer member 43 is "also formed with an offset arm 49, which overlaps the face of the disk and carries near hammer approaches the end of "m d at 51 and normally itsouter end a striking dog or pawl 50 pivheld in the position shown in Fig. 2, with an edge against the stops 51 by means of a coil spring 52.

A dog 58 is pivoted in the housing at 59, and is'notched at its outer end as at 60 to engage a squared stud 61 upon the side face of the hammer 43 to hold the latter'away from the disk and prevent its opcrating the lever and catch to release the switch. The dog is further provided with adapted to be engaged by a latch 63 to normally hold the notch 60 from engagement with the squared stud" 61, a spring 64 connected to the rear end of the 'dog at 65 andto the latch .nt 66 serving to hold these members normally in engagement with each other and to lower the. notched end'of the dog when released.
In orier to rengage the dog with the latch formed with a after it has been released, the former is projection 58*, which, when the dog is down, is engaged by a roller 58 raised to permit the latch 63 to spring over the spur 62.

employed in the machine of the Vincent patout above referred to for actuating the'detent 5" for the clutch'betwecn the shaft 2 and the worm wheel mounted thereon and by which it is driven, and it willbe sufficient for the present purpose to refer'very briefly to this mechanism. A finger bar 36 is mounted to reciprocate vertically near one edge of the frame of the adding machine at the right of the bank of keys, the latter being omitted from the present showing for the sake of clearness, and a pair of levers 36 and 36" support the finger'bar through the posts 36", 36", to which the levers are pivoted at their outer ends. The inner ends of the levels are connected at 36 by a pin and slot connection, and are normally held with their outer'ends elevated by the coil spring 36 connecting the levers, as shown in Fig. 1. The lever 36" is extended beyond its connection with lever 36 and provided with a headed stud a working in a slot in the up per'end of a vertical'bar 36. As shown in Fig. 2 the bar 36'is reduced at its lower end and extends through aneyc or opening in the outer end of arm 5", which is pivotally mounted upon the screw bolt 5 upon the side of the housing 12', there being a coiled cushioning spring-36' surrounding the. bar between the arm and shoulder 36. The fiat hub of the arm 5" is of large diameter and provided upon its upper edge with gear teeth 5 forming in effect a mutilated gear which intermeshes with the teeth5 of a disk fixed upon the outer end of the rock shaft 5" (see Fig.4), carrying the .detent which controls the clutch between the shaft 2 for operating the adding inachineand its drivingmechanism. The refernce numeral 300 designates the usual tubular stub shaft of the adding machine, which may be'of the type disclosed in Burroughs Patents Nos. 504,963 and 505,078 of June 12, 1893, and at 311 is shown the full stroke sector, also a common element of such adding machines, and since these elements, as well as the vertical bar 36 and the clutch mechanism ant connectionsare fully described in the Vin cent patent,, to which reference has been made, no further description of them need e only modification of this part of the mechanism which is peculiar to my invention consists in thearm 5'" formed integral with the disk 5", and which' is adapted, when the clutch into engagement, todescend upon the stud 68 upon the outer end of an arm 69, formed integral with the latch 63.
he operation of my invention may-noube understood. When it is desired to use the machine, the push rod 19'is depressed and the switch governing the supply ofcurrent to the motor snapping over the shoulder 22 and holding the push rod depressed for the time being,
saiddiskis rotated, to throw th e 'roclr shaft 100. After each operation,
the operator immediately releases the finger bar 36 and thereupon the vertical bar 36 drops, permitting the detent 5 to release the clutch after one revolution of the shaft 2.
The motor, however, will continueits revolution and continue to turn the timing shaft and the timing disk 40, until stopped by the action of the latter.
As will be seen later at the time the current is cut off and the motor and its driven parts come to rest, the timing mechanism is in the position shown in Fig. 5. On depression of the push bar 19 and the consequent closing of the'circuit, the revolution of the timin disk forces the nose of the hammer out o the notch in the disk andit rests upon the latter until the notch in the disk again approaches the nose of the hammer. n Fig. 2, the parts are shown in the position which they occupy just after the timing disk has begun to revolve and before any manipulation of the finger bar 36. If there has been no operation of the figier bar and consequent release of the dog 5 y the detent 63, the nose of the hammer, on continued rotation of the disk will ride over the cam pro'ection 42 and fall into the notch of. the dis permitting the hammer to be drawn forward by spring 46, whereby the do 50 strikes the lever and through the lin 55 draws the catch 23 to release the push rod 19. Immediately after the dog 50,strikes the arm 55", the other wing or branch of the dog comes in contact with the stationary stud 54 and draws the dog away from the face of the arm 55" permitting the lever and catch to resume their normal position. When the catch is with- ---d rawn, the switch is opened under the pressure of its spring,- and the current being thus shut off and the motor stopped, the ink ing device comes to rest with t c 11096 of the hammer in the notch of the timin disk. If, however, during the period that t e circular part of the periphery of the disk is moving past the nose of the hammer, the is operated, it causes the arm 5" to engage the stud on the arm 69 and withdraw the catch 63 to release the dog 58 which thereupon comes forward with its. outer end in contact with the squared lug.
'without departing 61. When, with the parts in this condition, the cam projection 42 on the timing disk reaches the nose of the hammer it forces the latter back until the squared lug 61 thereon enters the notch in thc dog 53 (see Fig. 6). On the further revolution of the disk and while the notch therein is beneath or adjacent the nose of the hammer,
the latter is retained in inoperative osition by the dog. Shortly after the note 41 in the disk has been carried past the nose of the dog the roller 58" wipes past the projection 58 upon the latter backward engaged by the catch 63. 'the hammer in the meantime being released and permitted to come forward into contact with the timing disk. lated before the cam on the disk periphery wipes under the nose of the hammer, the operation of the dog 58 will be repeated and the hammer the catch to shpt off power. On the other hand. if no such manipulation takes place the dog remains under control of the catch 63, and when the notch in the disk comes opposite the nose of the hammer the latter gives a stroke to the lever controlling the catch and permits circuit. The machine, as above stated, always comes to rest with the nose of the hammer in the notch of the disk as shown in Fig, 5. I
The, timing speed of revolution by suitably proportioning the reducing gearing by which it is driven from the motor and in practice it is given such a speed that any ordinary manipulation of the machine will prevent the shutting off for example,
of current to the motor. I the shaft be given three-quardisk may be given any desired I dog 58 and forces the until the spur 62=is again prevented from tripping the switch to open the ters of a revolution or a revolution per minute, the normal operation of the machine will be sufficient to preventthe opening of the switch. Obviously, if for any reason it is desired to stop the motor at any other ition of the timing shaft than that shown m Fig. 5 it may be done by tripping the catch 23 by hand. For this purpose the stud or handle 26', shown more particularly in Fig. 3, may conveniently be employed.
It will be understood that the description of the specific form of apparatus embodying my invention is ,for the purpose of exemplification only, though it is .atpresent mypreferred form, and various modification and changes may be made, not only inthe source of motive power and character of thecut-out mechanism, as suggested above, but in the various features of the timing mechanism itself and its connections to the motor from my invention so long as the structures embody the featufes and principles of the following claims.
