ELEvAToE-LOCKING SYSTEM.
Patented faces, of a common design. Jaws 8A and. 9 are mounted in the casing and project partly across the passage therethrough, being located -at opposite sides of the center of the passage. The jaw 8 is` somewhat hookshaped and is carried b a shank 10 which slides in the casing a jacent to one side thereof. The jaw 9 is connected to a shank 11 disposed in the opposite side of the cas-` ing. A tailpiece or 4arm 12 projects from the shank 11 across the casing into the line of movement of the shank 10 and a spring 13 is confined between the end of said shank 10 and the end of said tailpiece. A lever 14 is pivoted on a stud l5 in the casing between theshanks 10 and 11, and has two arms with rounded ends contained in recesses 1 7 and 18 of the Shanks 10 and 11. On the outer side of the end of the casing are formed two bosses 19, 19 which are centrallybored and in 4which are slidingly contained rods or plungers 20, 20, the inner ends of which bear against the transverse tailpiece 12. extension frame2l forms a part of the casing and supports a pivot rod 22 on which are mounted a series of levers 23. These levers are all alike and each has an arm 24. extending from the `pivot rod approximately perpendicular to the line of action of the plungers 20 andthe shanks of the jaws. A presser bar 28 is hung by ears 29' from a pivot rod 30, which is mounted in the frame.
This bar bears-on the ends ofthe two plunj gers 20 and lies contiguous to the shorter' arms 24.- of the levers 23. The springs 26 tend to hold the levers 23 in the position shown in Fig. 3, in which position they cause the latter to press upon the bar 28 and transmit pressure through the plungers 2O to the shank 11, holding the jaw 9 in the closed position and actingthrough the lever 15 to hold the jaw 8 also in the closed position. In this position the-jaws enter the space between two knobs or buttons 31, 32 or other abutments on the shipper cable, leaving an open space less wide than the buttons and making itv impossible` to shift the cable.
The spring 13 tends to open the jaws, that terposed between said bar and said device for moving the latter in consequence of movement ,of the bar.
6. A shipper cable lock comprising a casing having a passage for a cable, complemental jaws on each side of said passage connected and operable to move in unison toward and away from the center of the passage, a plurality of operating levers mounted side by side on said casing and each operable independently of the others, and transmitting` means between said levers and one of said jaws arranged .for transmitting the movement of any one of said levers to the jaws.
7 A lock for the shipper cable of an elevator comprising a locking element adapted to prevent movement of such cable when in one position and to permit movement thereof when in another position, a plurality of operating members mounted side by side and each capable of independent operation,
and motion transmitting means between said levers and said locking element, arranged for actuation by any one of said operatlng members for shifting said locking element from one of its positions to the other.
8. A lock for the operating rope of an elevator comprlsing cooperating jaws, a spring arranged to react between said jaws tending to hold the latter in open position, a lever having arms engaged with the jaws respectively whereby to transmit movement from one to the other, and external means arranged to act upon one of the jaws for moving the same into the closed position against the resistance of said spring.
9. An elevator lock comprising independently mounted movable slides each having a jaw and being guided and arranged to travel in substantially parallel paths, one of said slides having a tailpiece, a spring interposed between said tailpiece and the other slide arranged and operative to hold the slides and jaws in a predetermined position, external actuating means arranged and operable to act against one of said slides to displace it from the position in which it is held by said spring, and transmission means engaged with both slides for causing the other slide to be moved simultaneously with and oppositely to the slide which is moved by the actuating means.
