- .uTED STATES PATENT OFFICE. L
ADAMS, or ROCHESTER, NEW YoRk; ASSIGNORS ro EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK;
TRIMMING-BOARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, HueoF. Honrnn and GEORGE W. ADAMS, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of-New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimming-Boards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, forming a part of this speci cation, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our present invention relates to trimming boards by means of which sheet material is cut to definite shapes and sizes and more particularly to the type of board used for trimming photographic prints in order that they may be kept in such manner as to leave a border of a desired width around the picture area and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and c0nvenient device of this nature employing a gage that can be easily and quickly adjusted and is easily removed when desired though adequately fastened in place when in use. To these and other ends-the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a trimming board constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of our invention; a
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the body portion of the gage.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
The bod or table 1 of the board, supported on egs 2, is flat and preferably rectangular in form so that the sheet to be cut may be laid thereon and moved about freely. 3 indicates a photograph in process of being trimmed, 4 the picture area thereof and 5 the border that is to be cut to a uniform width. At the front end of the table 1 is a vertically swinging shearing blade or k if 6 having a op rat g and e 7 and a bottom Specification of Letters Patent.

movement of the sheet 3 beneath it.

journal 8 mounted in a bearing 9 projecting laterally from the table.
Atthe left edge of the table we provide a raised guide strip 10 having a scale 11 suitably marked thereon in the nature of a straight edge or rule. This guide extends at right angles to the knife 6 and by holding one edge of the print 3 against the guide, an adjacent edge can be trimmed at right angles. A gage arm 12 is slidably mounted on the guide 10 parallel with the knife and adapted to be moved toward and from the latter. Itprojects over and parallels the table 1 just a sufficient distance above its surface to permit the introduction arlild T e longitudinal edge 13 that is disposed toward the knife is a straight edge intersecting the guide 10 at right angles and readily movable into register with the graduations of the scale 11. The body portion 14 of the gage spans the guide 10 and has a shoulder 15 underneath that cooperates with the inner edge or side of the guide. It also has a recessed portion 16 to provide clearance for the screws 17 that hold the gage to the table. On the outer side of the guide, the body portion terminates in a yoke 18 mounting a pin 19 on which is pivoted a movable jaw 20. The vertical engaging portion 21 of this jaw cooperates with the outer side of the guide 10 in opposition to the shoulder 15 of the gage and is pressed against it to clamp the gage in fixed position on the guide by a set screw 22 threaded through the other arm 23 of the jaw and abutting the top of the body portion 14.
The mode of operation of the device is obvious, it is thought, from the foregoing. Upon loosening the screw 22, the gage 12 may be moved to any position on the guide and the distance of its straight edge 13 from the knife as registered by the scale 11 determines the width of the border to which the print is to be trimmed. The sides of the picture area 4 are successively brought into line with the edge 13 and the knife operated. After one edge has been trued and placed against the uide. 10, the straight edge 13 will be aral lel to a side of the picture area 4 and t e latter may therefore be readily moved into register with it. When the screw 22 is loosened, the gage arm 12 is free to be lifl fitl ofl" entirely in case it is. desired to' u sethe board any. p'urpse ivith iiit a gage. r
