Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. BADGLE'Y, of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and use- 5 ful Improvements in Apparatus for Forming Photographic Mats and Masks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to photography and it has for one of its objects to pro- 5 vide a light, cheap and convenient apparatus suitable for operation by hand and adapted for cutting or removing the centers from sheets of material, the apparatus being adapted to receive sheets of different shapes and sizes and to remove central portlons of diiferent shapes and sizes therefrom to form masks and mats used in the printing and mounting of photographs. The improvements are further directed toward providing 5 a simple and convenient method of forming such articles whereby an inner portion of the sheet of material may be quickly designed and removed in a manner insuring a clear out and symmetrical opening.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims, at the end of 5 the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trimming machine constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention, the knife being shown in its raised position; Fig. 2 is a top plan View, the knife being in the same position; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the knife in lowered position; Fig. 4 is a central vertical section taken substantially on the 5 line 4 4: of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a detail sect-ion taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, showing the structure on one of the work guiding stops; Fig. 6 is a central section taken substantially on the line 66 of Fig. 2, through the other guiding stop; Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the knife bearing taken substantially on the line 77 of Fig. 3; Fig. 8 is a plan view of a work piece showing the manner in which it is folded 5 and cut; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the same folded; Fig. 10 is a plan view of a photographic mat or vignetting mask constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 11 is a section thereof taken substantially on the line 1111 of Fig. 10.
Similar reference numerals throughout the figures indicate the same parts.
Referring first to Figs. 9, 10 and 11, which illustrate the product and method of the invention, the former is shown in Figs. 10 and 11 to comprise a plurality of superposed sheets A, B, C, D having central openings a, b, 0, d diminishing in size in the order named and concentrically arranged to give the border effect of Fig, 11. The portion of the photograph to be displayed is visible through the small opening d and the successive surrounding mats may vary in size or color or otherwise according to taste or one mat alone may be used. One such mat, of opaque material, may be used as an ordinary mask for printing a border about the negative or the masks may be superposed as shown and constituted of partially opaque material to give a graded effect to the printed border.
In Fig. 8 is shown the blank or sheet from which I form the mat and the present description will be confined by way of example to rectangular mats having similar openings forming frames or borders of uniform diameter, these being more widely useful. The sheet E being preferably first trimmed to the required size, it is then folded along the dotted lines ee in such manner that the marginal edge f is superposed upon the opposite marginal edge 9 which develops a doubled edge along the line 6-6 and half of each marginal edge It and g is superposed upon the other half. The sheet is then again folded along the line 7c-k being portions of the doubled edge e@ in superposed relation and the marginal edges h-z', also, as shown in Fig. 9. The part comprising the adjacent portions of all the doubled edges but not in cluding the marginal edges of the sheet are then removed by cutting along the dotted lines LZ and when the sheet is unfolded the cut will be found to be along the dotted lines mm of Fig. 8, or in other words the mat A of Fig. 10 will be produced. A smaller portion L-L is removed for a smaller aperture such as that of the mat B and so on.
Referring now more particularly to the other figures of the drawings for a description of the apparatus which I have provided to form these mats or masks, 1 indicates a work table or support adapted to be held down in position by fasteners extending through the several apertures 2 thereln and provided with lugs 3 at one side forming journals for a pivoted knife i that is provided with relatively angularly arranged ntersecting cutting edges 5 and 6, the knife being operated by means of upwardly extending handles 7. The cutting edges 5 and 6 cooperate with similarly arranged shearing edges 7 and S on the work support as clearly shown in Fig. 2 in a well known manner to cleanly cut a V-shaped notch in sheet material held on the support to pro ect beyond the shearing edges 7 and S, but as the latter are more conveniently formed as shown with plane vertical faces and the corresponding faces of the knife blades 5 and 6 are of similar contour while the knife swings into cooperation with the work support upon the arc of a circle, it is necessary, in order to obtain an intimate and accurate reg ister of the said cooperating cutting parts, to render one of the pai'ts yielding in character which I prefer to do by mounting the pivots 9 of the knife in yielding bearings. One of these hearings is shown in section in Fig. 7 and comprises an oval journal box 10 in which the pivot 9 has a limited amount of play in one transverse direction against the resistance of a spring 11 housed in a trans verse recess 12 and held in place by a screw plug 13. Extending parallel with each cutting edge 5-6 of the knife when in operative position is a channel 14 in the face of the work support and slidable in each channel is a work guiding stop 15 having a bifurcated body portion 16 that is clamped in any desired position in the channel by spreading the bifurcated portions against the walls of the latter through the medium of a tapered thumb screw or plug 17 while the work abutting face 18 of the stop extends transversely of the channel across the face of the work support and each is disposed at right angles to the adjacent cutting edge of the knife and in parallelism with the other cutting edge; hence, at right angles to each other.
A slot 19 in the work support or table parallel with one of the channels l-it forms a way for supporting a bracket 20 that is connected rigidly with one of the stops 15 as shown in Fig. 5 and extends downwardly through the slot 19 and thence beneath the knife when in operative position and carries a third work guiding stop 21 on the opposite side of the latter within the angle of the knife which is in alinementwith and movable with the stop 15 with which the bracket connects it on the outer side of said angle. There is thus produced relatively angularly arranged guiding stops intersecting the angle of the knife when in operative position and comprising work abutting faces upon both sides of the cutting edge of the knife, the utility of which arrangement will hereinafter appear.
The work is held in position on the table in my preferred construction by a clamp 22 preferably pivoted at 23 to one of the guiding stops 15 and having an engaging portion 24: that contacts the work sheet in the region of the shearing edge 7 on the work support under the influence of a spring 25, the finger portion 26 being conveniently arranged to raise it out of engagement when desired.
In forming the mask, as before described, the folded sheet of Fig. 9 is placed on the -work support and held within the corresponding angle of the guiding stops 15 and 21, as shown in Fig. 2, to project over the shearing edges 7 and 8 and beneath the knife edges 5 and 6, which latter are then ready to make the cut L-L.
In order to enable the operator to measure the size of the desired mat or the opening therein after the sheet has been folded and inserted beneath the knife, I provide scales on the work support extending longitudinally of the edges 5-6 and 7-8 which are divided into degrees or graduations 27 and fractions thereof with which the work abutting faces of the stops 15 register but which are spaced apart in half units of measurement and entitled progressively in full units of measurement 28. For instance, in the present embodiment, the distance between the graduations 27 are equal to half an inch while the characters 28 indicate full inches, but as the sheet is folded when out each dimension of the cut is multiplied by two when it is folded and the operator has only to follow the characters in adjusting the stops 15.
It will be understood that the mat may be formed, when necessary, from a sheet of any shape by first cutting the central opening and then advancing the sheet a farther distance beneath. the knife to cut the marginal edges instead of trimming the sheet as a preliminary step and cutting the central opening with reference to the marginal edges thereof.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work support having a channel therein and a knife cooperating with the support, of a work guiding stop on the latter comprising a split body portion slidable in the channel, means for spreading the same against the walls of the channel and a work abutting block carried on the body portion and extending transversely of the channel across the face of the work support.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work sup port and a knife cooperating therewith hZLV-f ing a relatively angularly arranged cutting edge, of work guiding stops on one of said members arranged both within and without the angle of the cutting edges.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work support and a knife cooperating therewith having relatively angularly arranged cutting edges, of work guiding stops on one of said members arranged on opposite sides of one cutting edge and adjustable in parallelism therewith and toward and from the other cutting edge.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work support having a channel therein and a way extending parallel with the channel and a knife cooperating with the support and having a cutting edge parallel with the channel,
of a guiding stop movable in the channel on one side of the knife, means for locking it therein, a bracket connected with the guide and supported in the way, said bracket extending downwardly within the way and thence beneath the knife and a second guiding stop on the bracket arranged on the other side of the knife.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work support having a shearing edge thereon, of a knife pivoted at one side thereof having relatively angularly arranged cutting edges diverging toward the axis of pivotal movement and conforming to the shearing edge of the support, said knife being arranged in bearings located at one end of each blade, and springs arranged in the bearings to act against the blades and yieldingly force them against the shearing edge of the work support.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work support and a knife cooperating therewith, of an adjustable work abutting guide on the support and a clamp carried on the guide and adapted to directly engage and hold the work in position on the support.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a work support and a knife cooperating therewith having relatively angularly arranged cutting edges, of scales each arranged on one of said members to extend longitudinally of one cutting edge, said scales being divided into registering degrees spaced apart in half units of measurements and entitled progressively in full units of measurement.
