Be it known'that GRIFFIN S. ACKLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident-of the. city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New 'York,
has invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Brake Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to mechanism f0 controlling thebrakes and in its main features is adapted more particularly for use 7 in connection with car brakes of the type in which the brake is operated by means of a chain or the like wound upon a suitable niember which is generally operated manu a ly, The present invention is an improvement over those set forth in my prior Patents Nos. 1,002,551 and 1,158,764 and operates broadly 'on the same principles, com rising in its general combination a win ing or power drum on which the brake chain is adapted to .be wound and on which also a check chain is wound inopposition to the brake chain.
The present invention has the same gen- V feral ob ect of economy of space and. easy operation as those set forth in my above mentioned previous patents while in addition it has for its objects to cheapen the con-- struction and decrease the welght of the brake mechanism,-a further object being to insure a quicker withdrawal of the-brake shoe or brakeproper from the wheel.
The construction by which these objects are attained will be. fully set forth in the v following specification taken in connection 7 with the accompanying drawings, the various combinations and arrangements of parts constitutmg the present invent on bem more particularly set forth in the appende claims.

A portion of the latform of a car is shown at 1. Upon th1s platform, referring now more partlcularly to Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted an open bottomed casing or hous-' ing 2 which may be securedto the platform 'by any suitable means as thebolts 3. J our.-
sprocket wheel 10 over whichis looped a sprocket chain 11 which extends upwardly and passes over a relatively small sprocket e 12 fixed on a shaft 13 journaled in a whe second casing 14 as will be presently pointed out and adapted'to be rotated by a handwheel 15.
The casing 14 is supported at the proper distance above the platform for convenient operation of the hand-wheel by means of a pair of pipes 20 and 21 which are screwed at their lower ends into suitable tapped openings in the top of the lower casing or housing 2 and which have the casing 14 mounted on their upper 'ends. As here shown the upper ends of the pipes 20 and 21 are exteriorly threaded as at22 and pass freely through openings 23 in the bottom of thecasing, the latter resting upon nuts 24 threaded on the pipes while lock nuts 25 are threaded over the ends of the pipes projectingthrough the openings 23 and serve to rigidly secure the casing in position. It will be apparent that by adjusting the nuts 24 and 25 on the pipes a corresponding vertical adjustment of the casing, and consequently of the sprocket wheel 12, to properly tension the sprocket chain 11 may be effected. As will be noted the pipes 20 and 21 extend tangentially to the sprocket wheels 10 and 12 and thus serve as conduits for the opposite reaches of the sprocket chain 11.

Referring now more particularly to the mechanism contained in thehousing 2, the
drum 6, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, is-
' formed in two sections, 41 and 42, between which the sprocket Wheel 10 is located, the brake chain 7 winding on the section 41 and the check chain 8 on thesection '42. Each of these sections is spirally grooved in its periphery to receive its chain and constitutes in effect a cone increasing in diameter to ward the center of the drum where each is provided with registeringlugs 43 and 44 through which a bolt 45 is passed by means Y of which the chains 7 and 8 are fastened to the drum. In the construction shown in Figs. '1 and 2 the check chain 8, instead of being fastened at its opposite end to the brake chain as in my previous patents is. preferably carried upwardly from the drum,"

I The brake chain 7 .-passes down from the drum through a, suitable opening in the platform 1 and over a pulley 56- located bef neath the platform. As a feature of the present invent-ionI prefer to mount this pulley in Ma manner to'cause it to assist in the rapid unwinding of the chain when freeingthe brake shoes from the car Wheel and to this end the pulley'is journaled in the free ends of a pair of swlnging arms 57 which are p1voted as-at 58 to.a bracket 59 fixed to the underside of the platform. "A pair of'springs 60, secured at one end'to the, arms 57. and at opposite ends to the bracket 59 normally tend to swing the pulley in a direction away from the brake shoe. Aswill be apparent from the relative positions of the parts shown in Fig. 2,-when' the drum is freed to release the brake the pulley 56 moves rapidly under. the influence of the springs 60 in a manner to lengthen the path of the.
brake chain 7 from the drum to the brake and thus acts to cause a quick unwinding of the drum and release of the brake chain. 1
Swinging movement of the pulley in oppo- I site directions is preferably limited by means -of stops 61 and 62 formed on the bracket 59 and adapted to be engaged by the arms 57 as the pulley swings in opposite directions.
The drum is releasably locked against unwinding movement by means of a ratchet wheel 65. fixed thereto and engaged by a gravity-release pawl 66 .whi'chis moved against the ratchet Wheel by afoot lever 67 pivoted as at 68 to thehousing 2 and having 1 a Slot and pin connection 69 with the pawl 66, thelever 67 projecting at its free end through an opening 70 in the housing and being provided with afoot pedal 71. It will be apparent that with arrangements of parts just" described, with the power drum located as close as possible to the platform, a simple construction, and
one combining great strength and rigidity with a comparatively small weight, will be provided. 1
In Fig.6of the drawings I have shown a modified means for transmitting power from the shaft 13 to the. drum 6 in which a small drum 80is mounted on the shaft 13 instead of the sprocketwheel 12while the "drum 6 is provided with an intermediate cylindri-.
cal section 81 in place of the sprocket Wheel 10, a suitable rope 82 passing over these drums,- being preferably attached to each drum in any suitable manner and given enough turns around each drum to permit of the necessary winding and-unwinding movement.

In this modification the-car platform is indicated at 85. Secured to theunderside of the platform at, the proper point for locating the brake staff is a casing 86 through which the lower end of the brake stafi 88 projects. The brake staff may be provided with suitable anti-friction bearings .89

while a check chain 101 is attached to the modification however, leading from the drum in the same direction as the brake chain 100 and being connected to the latter at a suitable distance from the drum as in my above mentioned PatentNo. 1,158,764.
The reaches of the sprocket chain 99 are inclosed in pipes 103 and 104 corresponding ,to the pipes 20 and '21 and these pipes may be either set freely in suitable openings in the casing 86 and housing 95 or may be hung from the car platform by suitable hangers indicated at 105 and 106. I
The operation of both modifications'will, it is thought, be apparent from the above mentioned. description since it will be obvious that the rotation of the shaft 13 or brake staff 88 will cause a corres onding rotation at reduced speed of the rums 6 and 6. During winding of the brake chains the check chains unwind and when the brake chains unwind the check chains wind and so limit the unwinding movement to obviate taking up unnecessary slack at the be-- ginning of the winding. operation.
As many changes could be made'in the drum, a housing adapted to rest on a car above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention designed without departing from the scope of the appended claims, I intend that I all matter contained in the above descrip- 'tion or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative merelyv of an operativev embodiment of my invention and not in a limiting sense.
'.What I claim is:-'
1. In a brake mechanism, a winding drum, a housing therefor, a pair of pipes projecting upwardly from said housing, a casing mounted on the upper ends of said pipes, a handwheel shaft mounted in said casing, and mea'nsfor rotating said drum from said handwheel shaft, including a flexible' member extending through said pipes.
2. In a brake mechanism, a winding drum, 2. housing therefor, a pair of pipes looped over the projecting upwardly from said housing, a
casing mounted on the upper ends of said pipes, a handwheel shaft mounted in said casing and. means for rotating said drum from said handwheel shaft, including a flexible member extending throughsaid pipes, and means for adjusting said casing vertically upon the upper end of said pipes.
3. In a brake mechanism, a 'winding drum comprising two sections each increasing in diameter from the end toward the center of the drum, a brake chain attached attached to the other section. H
4. In a brake mechanism, a winding to one of said sections and a check chain drum comprising two sections each increasing in diameter from the end toward the center of the drum, a brake chain attached to one. of saidsections and a check chain ,attached to the other section, means for rotating said drum, said means being connected to the said drum between the said sections.
5. In a brake mechanism, a winding.
drum having two sections each of increasin diameter and upon which the brake an check chains are adapted to be wound, respectively, a housing inwhich said drum is mounted, a brake chain attached at one end to saiddrum, and a'longitudinally resilient check chain attached at one end to. the said drum.
6. In a brake mechanism, a winding and at its opposite end to the housing, said check chain extending from the drum in an opposite direction to the brake chain.
